I wasn't born around the time the tv show aired. I watched the movie when I was 6, so 2 years after it came out, and I found the D had a tv show when I was 10, and now I'm finding out Lee was in the show too, which is great because is a favorite character of mine from the movie.

So i'm pretty sure the backstory is JB and KG got mega famous and were friends with Lee in real life when they were all struggling actors. These and other bits are their way of including him in the magic and success. While I find it's best to not mix business and friendship I do find these clips very beautiful.
