He was heartbroken because of his best friend's death and of the fact that he couldn't fulfill his promise to his wife. Then his physical pain from the transference of birth defects from his best friend's only surviving baby son. Emotionally and physically - it's too much to bear!

To those saying the drama has a bad or no happy ending, I beg to disagree with you guys. Maybe to some, it's an open ending but for me, it's the perfect ending that made sense too. The fact that Fang Jamming is alive is more than enough for me. What I like the most is they stick to the main lead's character. Since episode 1 Fang Jaiming is already introduced as a loyal subject and someone willing to give his life for the king and his country. In the end, he chose to do what was beneficial to the country. And Haishi as his woman and disciple understand his decision immediately. Haishi may be stubborn but she is also selfless, and a character that reflects his master. They might not be physically together but they are in one mind and one heart with the sacrifice they made.

Agreed. I like how the drama ended actually. I am not into that all feel good perfect fairytail ending. It had just the right amount of goodness and sadness to it. I like this drama due to all the actors. They really did a great job. Directors and screen writers and ALL staff did great. It is not easy for actors to develop that scene of longing and sustain it in front of the camera but chen wei ting and yang mi did great. Xu kai cheng did great too as a heart broken man that was thrust into being an emperor. Chen xiao yun also did a great job in acting 2 different characters. Everyone did great. I am rewatching the drama again hahaahahaaha!!!!

Thank you RC. Your comments tell me you understand the uniqueness of love between Master & Disciple perfectly. In the end, they both choose to put the nation first. But that doesn’t mean they don’t love each other any less despite the separation. Remember the little Emperor called the Master the Grand Mentor. And through the little boy, they are still in contacts occasionally. The little Emperor already said he is going to visit him soon & requested the Empress to come visit him too. This means that their relationship continues but not as husband & wife at the moment until the boy is old enough to govern by himself. There is no rule to stop the Empress from treating the Master as a lover when she comes to visit him. The ending gives us the chance to imagine how their love is manifested and fulfilled. That will be in season 2 if any 😜🤗🥰

I didn’t think it was a “bad” ending compared to the novel. Not all of the leads have happy endings but I wouldn’t let that deter you from watching a really good series. It was very well written.

Last episode 48 After Disu and Tilan death, Eldest son Prince Wei Yun promote Consort Chunrong( Haishi) to Empress meaning she has a second son with FJM.

It’s not a bad ending. It’s an open ending. Spoilers ahead…. ******* Okay, so 1. basically it’s implied that her and FJM may have had a child since, it’s stated that the emperors first son is the crown prince. 2. FJM and her might be able to reunite when the crown prince gets older because it’s indicated he’s getting better/not as sickly. Also, they are probably continuing their secret relationship like they did when she was in the palace 3. The only real downside is that the emperor and tilan died tbh because everything else is left to our interpretation 4. This is honestly the best possible ending they could have had because throughout this drama they have been foreshadowing that tilan and emperor would die.

Yeah I think initially they definitely had a child because even the mermaid foreshadowed it. But I think it didn’t pass review so it got cut, because that would mean she cheated on her legal husband and this storyline probably got censored because the censorship board found it not be a good message for youngsters. That’d be my guess.

I don't like sad endings. Don't know if I will watch all of it , I'm only half way through the drama. If I want realistic I can just turn off the TV. Nothing about these dramas are realistic. They can kill off thousands of people but no one is having sex. You are lucky if you get to see the main leads having a kiss. Makes you wonder how China had a over population problem , lol. So for me I'll take the unrealistic happy ending.
