I can't bring myself feel sorry for her at all. A year ago, she made herself a wedding dress hoping to marry a man, who already has a wife. Her family wouldn't wait for 10 years for Yuanniang to die. If she survived for too long, they'd marry her to someone else. So she was hoping for a woman, mother with a child to die as soon as possible. She was innocent this time, but just few scenes before, she did throw herself at him, just with her clothes on. And she had another option. He offered to find her another decent husband. If her feelings were reprocitated, would he be against it? She still hopes a little boy will lose his mother, so she could be the big shot in the house. Just for this?

And LianFang has her mother’s support to marry for love and be a concubine although she is of noble family. While a part of me does lightly scoff at the idea that a man would turn away a beautiful woman he's married to, another part of me understand why he does so. This is a man who spent his entire life living for others with no choice in his personal life. While arranged marriages are a part of the culture, so is the idea that within these marriages is growth and potential for love. Yet with his main wife, there is a personality clash. She doesn't trust him. She schemes against him and manipulates him. There is no equal footing on which to build something real. Same (in a different way) with the concubines. Just the fact that they are concubines already puts them in a position of subservience but also instills within them that same grasping sort of behavior that the ML is adverse to. He doesn't think he will ever be understood and loved because he's basically a tool they want to use to gain power for themselves within this little hierarchy. With their dependence on him, there's no room for sincerity. Some men probably enjoy that sort of power over these women; however, that doesn't seem to be the case for Xu LingYi. That's why Shiyi might be his chance at finding true love. She is as repelled by the concubine system and constant drama as he is - though her distaste stems from being on the receiving end of the schemes and power plays within her own family. As such, I don't see her currying favor or using tricks to get what she wants...actually, I doubt she will want anything from him, including his affection. It's that sort of blank slate and genuine reaction that I think he will be drawn to and the refreshing change of a shot at a relationship with a woman who, if she loves him, will love him for who he is and not what he can do for her. Even Lianfang, though she seems to genuinely be infatuated and perhaps love him, resorts to pandering. That entire room is a reflection of him and his likes. It shows: 1. She doesn't value herself enough to keep even a remnant of her own personality/promise of a lifetime of fawning (yawn) 2. The effort and meticulous research she put in makes the entire thing a display of insincerity. Can love truly exist within such a drive to become the "perfect" partner with every show of affection planned for a specific reaction? It would certainly turn me off. If I ever encountered someone who devoted their entire waking moments to making themselves do and be what they thought I wanted them to do instead of having a life of their own, I'd run for the hills too.

I know Lianfang is gonna turn evil later on but right now I just feel sorry for her. So far she's not evil, just a 15-18 year old girl who has a crush on this guy, and the adults around her keep telling her she's gonna get her way so of course, she doesn't realise she should stop. Growing up she would've expected her wedding day to be wearing the red wedding dress and lots of fanfare (concubines can't wear red at all, it's the main wife's colour). She wasn't even trying to seduce the guy (yeah she was being affectionate but nothing serious) but now all her opportunities are sealed into being a concubine. I like how the villains have backstories to how they gradually become eviler and eviler. I'm probably gonna hate her guts so much later on but just a few minutes of sympathy here lol.

Lianfang was evil from the start or she would not have went twice into the courtyard where the Marquis was. She knew his routine and tripped into his arms on purpose. He would have ended up taking the evil B for his wife because his mother would have insisted and he has yet to prove he is not controlled by his mother. Everything is mothers way. His wife was smart because her son would be replaced by Lianfang child. Glad her wedding night was a bust.

Since Lian is a concubine, her child would not be replaced when it comes to inheritance. Although they did say the husband doesn’t consider any difference between the wife’s child or the concubine’s s. He has two sons so far according to him. We’ll see how it plays out later.

Probably stemmed from the whole children thing. My grandfather had three wives in Korea (this was back in the 1920-30s), and it was because of children. First wife was barren. Second "only" gave him a daughter. Third (my grandma) gave him two boys and my mother. I was raised in the States so wasn't around all that, but I do remember my mother speaking with disdain about her half-sister...I call her that, my mom refuses to even acknowledge a relation. The resentment runs high even in the children of these situations - and they didn't even live under the same roof. Each one had their own separate home, with my grandmother living with my grandfather as his main (and pretty much only) wife after she began having sons.

А вообще классная дорама вместе с героямивживаешься в ситуации и сопереживаешь им. Великолепный актёрский состав, каждый на своём месте. Уже который раз пересматриваю и не надоедает.

Very lovely drama. Engaging and straight to the point! The plots, twist and turns are crazy! But I must say I m not a fan of meek husbands. I don't want a husband to be bully or insensitive but for goodness sake if u were man enough to have more than 1wife and or with concubine(s) then please for goodness sake be man enough to prevent injustice /bullying going on in ur resident. U can't pretend not to see, when a concubine or, one, of ur, kid, is, been bullied. U can be quiet but firm.

Norma Gears he is a bit of a fluff. I have yet to see him take a firm Stance on anything. His wife is also waiting for him to " move" so to speak. Is he a coward or a very filial son? Every woman in his home expects something from him: his mother; take care of the family and listen and do what I say, his concubines; choose me. The only person that wants nothing from him is his legal wife and that is what draws him to her. When he falls in love with her it will be epic and beautiful to watch. I literally cannot wait to see it happen. Loving the drama. English subs are excellent.
