One morning, Gordon is the yard, taking on a large supply of coal. James arrives and criticizes the big engine for being greedy, especially since Gordon has already taken on coal two other times. Gordon shrugs it off by saying he is an important engine and that all important engines need plenty of coal, something that James wouldn't understand. James ignores this and goes back to work. Later that day, Gordon has stopped to take on water from a standpipe because the water tower that he normally uses is under repair. Duck arrives and warns Gordon not to drink too much of the standpipe water as it lead to boiler ache. Gordon is agitated by the criticism and claims that big engines have big needs and little engines are just annoying. Duck laughs and leaves but not before giving Gordon a final warning.
A little while later, Gordon arrives at Knapford harbor and sees a visitor has arrived on the island and he has two tenders. Gordon is impressed with the visitor's appearance but soon becomes depressed when Diesel arrives and gloats about the diesels' victory over steam engines on the Mainland. Gordon's mood worsens the next day when Duck and Henry tease him about boiler-ache. Henry also jokingly says that Gordon should get a washout and he will feel like a different engine in no time but Gordon ignores the engines and backs down to the station platform to collect his train. Sir Topham Hatt speaks to Gordon as well and assures the big engine that steam engines will never become obsolete on his railway. When Gordon asks about the visitor and his two tenders, Sir Topham Hatt explains that the reason is due to the lack of coal and water in between stations on the Mainland. Gordon feels much better after hearing this and forgets to be depressed. But soon after this, Henry starts complaining and says to Duck and Donald that he deserves two tenders for his hard work.
Duck whispers a plan to Donald and decides to play a trick on Henry by coercing the green engine into pulling some of his "spare tenders". While Henry is skeptical at first as to why Duck has any tenders in the first place, he becomes initially delighted when the Great Western engine mentions that he has 6 tenders, which he will give to Henry by the end of the day. Henry is excited all day and constantly asks Duck if it's alright to take them. Duck always gives a positive response to Henry's question but by the end of day, when it comes time for Henry to claim the tenders, he finds out that they are very old, dirty and filled with boiler sludge. As the other engines watch Henry grudgingly pull his tenders through the station, Gordon teases him with the same joke that Henry used a few days ago.
