Ok so you can have this bike or the Tuareg 660. You can only chose one. Which one do you go with?
@lightweightadv
@lightweightadv Жыл бұрын
Great question Chris, they're both brilliant bikes and I enjoyed riding both. The 660 is lighter and has a great electronic package, the WR has great range, is simplistic etc. The Tuareg is cheaper and ever so slightly easier to ride. An important factor is the engine in the world raid, it is brilliant and is one of the most reliable motors according to stats. My money (Marc) is with the World Raid...but only Just. It feels more usable as a "tool of work" and in my subjective opinion, looks better, I know Jamie would disagree and choose the Tuareg. I would choose a Tuareg over a standard T7 in a heartbeat however. Hope that helps 👍🏻

@@lightweightadv I suppose the range is nice but I kind of feel like its over rated. A CB500X on a full tank will also get you 300 miles (I used to have this bike). I live in the US where you might justify the needed range, but a fuel bladder gets you there as well. And it sounds like based on the weight of this bike, taking it for 300 miles of off road seems possible but unlikely if the terrain is tricky. Like your channel name suggests, weight is a massive factor when living with a bike, and the regular T7 is already pretty porky and massively top heavy (I rode one for 10 days in the Rockies last year). Anyway, thank you for the review and comparison.
@lightweightadv

@@choerenz Chris, the world raid certainly feels far less top heavy than the stocker. In fact, it feels like a different bike. Better suspension helps, but half filled tanks place the weight and CofG better. Range is an interesting factor. In UK, its not essential to have big range, but it takes away the desire to refuel... Different to the need to refuel. The 660 is amazing, but I urge you... Try a world raid.

Tuareg seems nice on paper and probably a nice bike in general. However, i personally chose the WR recently over the bunch due to simplicity and reliability. I am actually intending to adv tour with it on and soft off roads all over europe. When i was shopping, there was a KTM 890 Adv R for £1000 less than the WR. Also, buying an adv bike you need a dealership support network. Bottom line, the WR looks the best, IS the most reliable, and rides brilliantly on and off road. The only drawback for me is the tubes, but i have accustomed myself with tools and knowledge to deal with it should / when it comes to play.

Nice review. I changed my T7 after 2 years to the world raid. Did get more money for it than i paid ;-). No regreats. Amazing bike!!! You are the first that noticed about the gearbox. That was the first thing i told my wife after the first ride. I did not expact that lovely gearbox. Enjoy and ride safe!

@@lightweightadv the fuel pump is in the left bit, and it equalizes both tanks, at least thats the logic i heard. In case one needs to fuel up only one tank, it's gotta be the left one only, then it'll pump to the right.

Bumpy tires and a 21-inch wheel do not play well at highway speeds. Hence we are seeing steering dampers come stock on all the OEM mid and heavyweight ADV bikes. When KTM came out with the first big ADV bike, the 1190, social media reported more than a few high-speed wobbles that resulted in a serious crash. One would think most people would not push bumpy tires north of 120 kph, but they did and they paid the price. Now the liability-adverse manufacturers just install the steering damper at the factory and call it done.
@lightweightadv

You know, I'd not thought about road speed, I'd presumed it was off road focused. Good info, thanks 😎👌🏻
@steveh545
@steveh545 Жыл бұрын
I'm not expert either, but as far as the steering damper goes: I think you need to ride in some deepish sand, or rocky terrain, try the damper at both extremes of the setting, and then you'll be able to tell what it's doing. Maybe moderate speed, whatever that is. I think (youtube expert here) it's supposed to be 'invisible' when just cruising along, but reduce sudden deflections when they come along. if that makes sense. Nicely done vid. This bike ids't available in the US, but still nice to watch.
@lightweightadv
@lightweightadv Жыл бұрын
Hey Steve, that would make a lit of sense. I've no doubt it does a job, it's just not obvious. I do wonder if yamaha also put it on the bike to make the WR feel a bit more "premium" too 🤔

@@lightweightadv I think a lot (all?) rally bikes use one. Usually (by definition?) they are going fast through tricky terrain, so I’m sure they can tell the difference. It just makes your bike less twitchy at speed.

i got my world raid in August and absolutely love it . I am a bit of a short arse so struggled with getting a flat foot so i lowered it 40mm , still not flat footed but gave me more confidence. Yes the filler caps are a pain , it would be much better if you can open both at the same time. But apart from them tiny details everything else shines , she is a dream to ride , and after a long ride i still feel fresh and ready to go again , I have just changed the tyres to a set with more chunk for getting in them lanes 👍👍 Hopefully we can get down to the Lightweight festival this year 👍👍👍👍 them buttons are for changing settings when you have the raid display selected

Very nice bike if you need a dual purpose road / light off road bike. If you chose your trails and weather carefully you could do quite a bit of off road on that one. I’d expect the steering damper is for higher speed road issues. They’re expensive so if it didn’t need one, it wouldn’t have one!

I have a world raid and i have never touched dirt before, including on my R1200GSA. Nevertheless, since getting the WR, i have been motivated to do unpaveds, and have been introducing myself. The bike was NOT designed for dirtbike riders, it is classed as an Adventure bike, which you could equally use on and off road. I think the issue is that "dirt bike" riders think the T7 is specially made for off roading! Anyways, ill be travelling ON ROAD for 3500 miles to do a 4-500 mile TET in summer (instead of sticking it in the back of a van, like "dirt bike riders" do) :D.

I sure ride it on the high way 5 or 6 hours down to Italy in the summer to get to the nice trails but highway is also a stretch with this bike. So I was thinking of getting on but I dare that its off-road not a capable

Loved mine but had to sell it after a very short time owning it as I found no solution to the thunderous sub bass battering I got from the front end, giving me terrible headaches within an hour of riding. It made me dread getting back on it sometimes. No high, low or even 'no screen' options solved it. Real shame as there's a lot that was right about it. Agree with you that it has lots of improvements over the standard T7 too. With the same amount of fuel in it as the standard (ie. tanks half full) the centre of gravity is actually lower than the standard T7, which , along with the upgraded suspension makes it handle much better .

It holds twice as much fuel :) actually the tanks are low in the frame, and the airbox is where the "tank" normally sits, this lowers the center of gravity, but requires the tanks to be filled separately..
