The days with the tiny guys are always entertaining. Makes me laugh every time I catch those little ones and I go to set the hook and zip them right out of the water! Half the time I wonder how I even set the hook on something that small! Man, I'm really missing fishing season right now!

Nice work Tristan. Easy to see why the folks out west aren't thrilled with brook trout overpopulations. For my part, I'm usually good for one or two trout out of a beaver pond before I manage to spook the pool. The sections with faster water tend to cover up my stealth shortcomings. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your trip!

I've had few regrettable run-ins with beavers back in the day. If I were you I wouldn't be standing on a whole nest of those things tempting fate.

I am confident you are Bear Aware but worth mentioning that most areas in Montana have a robust grizzly population. Good to keep an eye out when fishing those small mountain streams.

I remember that book on beavers that you recommended which was an excellent read about how important beavers are too the environment. Did you ever see a beaver lodge on those ponds. I couldn’t tell.

Good morning, and Happy New Year's. Montana is magical. I had the good fortune of living there for 8 years, amongst some of the best trout fishing streams, rivers and creeks. Even the side road ditches with year round water running through had trout in them. Some great alpine lake fishing to hike into, as well. Wonderful memories. Thanks, and enjoy.

I've actually been planning to fish some of those urban roadside Montana ditches 😁

Another easy fishing in a beautiful setting! I bought a Mutant a month ago, broke the tip first time out (my fault), got a replacement tip but haven’t been able to use it yet. Thanks for the inspiration!

Dark and gloomy you say? Well looks like an awesome spot to hang out regardless! What other wildlife do you encounter on these excursions? I am a Birder but I get into all of it (so naturalist would probably be a better term)

What kind of line are you using here? Looks thicker than normal.
@TenkaraAddictКүн бұрын
Same line I always use. #3.5 level line. Depending on lighting conditions and what the background is, the line can be easier or harder to see.

yes. with tenkara you “will” the line out there with your mind. it’s really only for us big brained folk

@sasquatchjunk2 күн бұрын
Hey man I love the places you get to fish. One thing you may want to try is on the forward swing of the cast try keeping your rod tip parallel to the water. Keeping the rod tip down will serve 2 purposes. It allows you to extend the cast giving the cast an extra couple of feet. Also the benefit of the rod tip being lower gives you a chance to set the hook faster which means more hookups and less missed fish. Keep catching those fish man, it looks like some amazing scenery.
@TenkaraAddictКүн бұрын
The downside of that is that you have more line on the water, which can easily scare fish. I put more line on the water when I need to (i.e., need more reach), otherwise I see no reason to. It's not the rod tip being low or high that leads to faster hook sets, it's tension on the line. Thanks for watching!
@MrJoeTheShow23Күн бұрын
Lowering the rod tip also causes inaccurate casts. You want to stop the rod high to shoot the line out instead of down and let the fly fall softly on the water instead of slapping.

Make an effort to get those hung up flies. When you break them off you're just littering hooks and tippet into the ceeek. Dont be a lazy angler. We all leave fishing litter, but try and limit it.
