Bathurst is the greatest car racetrack in the world. It comprises 1000km (161 laps / 6+hours) of mayhem, bravery, and sheer stupidity, and is often won by mere seconds. First used in 1938 the track is a closed public road with an elevation of 174m (571ft) which makes it difficult to walk up let alone do what these guys do. Peter Brock won this great race nine times, and his legacy will be forever carved in history as The King of the Mountain.

Mark Larkham just explained what it takes to complete just ONE lap.. now go do that again another 160 times! 6.2 kilometres per lap x 161 = 1000 kilometres. The race takes roughly 6 hours from start to finish. This is what us Aussies call "The Great Race", and now you have watched this, you can see why! Shane van Gisbergen is the current Bathurst champion. He just won back to back races (he has won this race in 2020, 2022 & 2023), with plenty of second places along the way. He is leaving Supercars for NASCAR next year. SVG won the Chicago street race. Lots of us Aussies and Kiwi's will now be watching a lot of Nascar races next year! Great reaction :) #subbed

If you grew up in Australia and was interested in cars you could draw the Mount Panorama track. It was etched in your phsyche. If you grew up in Sydney you made sure to drive west to Bathurst (2 & 1/2 hours) just to drive around the track, which is a public road. Naturally you can only drive at 60km/h, but it's still incredible. The TV coverage of the race doesn't show the elevation. It's really steep going up and more so coming down. Iconic.

Bathurst is the proving ground for many of the top Aussie and Kiwi drivers, whom have made the jump to other driving disciplines elsewhere in the world. And The Dipper that's mentioned is no joke. The TV cameras do not convey how blind some of those corners are, or the gradients and elevation changes as you head down to Forrest Elbow. If you ever wonder why drivers like SVG and a handful of others can just jump into NASCAR or other auto disciplines and win, its because they tamed this monster of a track beforehand.

This is the first time I've heard Mount Panorama called "evil". 6.213 km x 161 laps =1000 km. No there's never been a race without a crash, in fact a lot of people watch it just for the crashes. To win Bathurst everything must be perfectly aligned, the car, the strategy, the weather, the team and most importantly the drivers.
@Rassskle
@Rassskle 10 ай бұрын
161 laps that takes about 6 1/2 hours, depending on how many pit stops and safety cars after a crash. If you leave the track you can rejoin from where ever you end up.......but you are normally waiting for the ambulance or bogged down in sand. The Caltex Chase at the end of Conrad Straight was added after too many died becoming air borne over the 2nd hump or the 3rd hump. Now the Chase is probably more dangerous than the 3 humps used to be. The Supercars take the Chase at approx. 300 klm ( almost 200 mph ) depending on how well they exit Forest Elbow to start the acceration. If you back off for the Chase you can forget a good lap time and will probably have a few cars fly past you. The hard part is stopping for the next left hand corner !!!! At 300 klm you cant touch the brakes until the car is straight, squared up and balanced. Then your too close to the left hander to brake sufficiently.......so once you clear The Chase and the car feels straight, you jump on the brake pedal as hard as you can and pray you make the left hander.......orherwise you plough straight into a very wide and very deep sand trap. I cant remember anyone ever winning from a sand trap. lol The second corner is probably the next most difficult ....... You approach at around 260 klm ( about 160 mph ) and you have to wipe off about 130 klm under brakes and take the corner at about 130 klm ( about 80 mph ). The corner itself looks like a beautiful smooth 90 mph corner.......BUT it isnt. The road is cambered the wrong way to send you into the wall / mountain. Then the brakes.......the braking area on approach is full of bumps etc. ( Ever tried to brake when going over a cattle grid ? lol Get the brakes wrong and a few cars fly past you or you hit the mountain. At best, your lap is kaput.....hope you can make up time before the end. Now grate........should be the most difficult corner on any track. The approach is full speed up the hill and then flat out as the track levels out and then dips. At well over 200 klms ( probably about 125 mph ), the track turns left and you are still hard on the accelerator. The grate is exactly where your front right tyre WANTS to go and the whole car is on the limit. If the front right tyre touches the grate......your day is over, the car might never race again and you probably need an ambulance, but you are praying that none of the cars coming through are going to collect you.....than can be deadly.

Bathurst is an epic event, there are always crashes, so much so that the local TAFEs (Aussie equivalent to trade-schools) send their panel beating students there for race week, they get a LOT of experience in a short time. Even though there are a lot of crashes, there have only been 4 fatalities at the Bathurst 1000 race, 1 in a 'support' race, 1 in practice, and 2 in the race itself (and one of those was a heart attack not a crash).

you'd have to be a lunatic to try to cut through the sand trap at the end of Conrod Straight....it will clog the airflow to the radiator & the bumps in it will feed you straight into the sand trap (& wall) on the other side of the racetrack (as you lose steering/braking) also....the cameras don't give you a true indication of the gradient of the racetrack, many Aussies have walked it (you can after every day's events are finished) & most of the gradients are at least 60 degrees (up/down)

It's not because of the grate, but because of the load on the tyre (tire). The grate just adds to the problem.

And if you go too wide and one of your tires actually meets that grate, your front end comes away looking like it's been through a woodchipper.

I would bet by the end of the 161 laps there would be 4 cars left racing - all the others destroyed lol

@@ReactionsbyD This is a link to a video of the 1969 race. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXukon-tlsqAZ9Usi=Ehy7E_VLOLuqsEmt 1969 Hardie-Ferodo 500 - In those days the race was 500 miles. 130 laps of the track. This is special to me because my mother used to have the same model car that wins the race. It's the car I was driven to school in. Besides that it is great Australian and American motorsport history. I say American because the two main manufacturers, GM Holden and Ford were American. There were Chargers here and there too. They were sold here under the name Valliant. Valliant Charger. 😀

You dont realise how steep it is driving up and down Mt Panorama unless youve driven it yourself. Its a public road 44 weeks a year, I recommend you drive it. The angles are ridiculous

1000 km (621 miles) puts a lot of wear on any car, but doing that distance as fast as the car can go on this track, you can image something going to break on at least 1 car, there are always crashes, not always rhe drivers fault, it's as much an endurance test as a speed test, then there are the economy games, can you do the race with 2 pit stops instead of 3? you could gain some time but what about tyre wear and how much fuel do you have? This is a really hard race, when I was little it used to take a lot longer, they would be racing in the dark on this track, you think this is an evil track in daylight, it's harder at night.

Bathurst 1000 isn't raced on a race track, when the grate race is not on its a normal public road, going up and down a mountain.

Not because of the grate...downforces and momentum. The grate is where the change happens. The grate doesn't do anything it's just the mark.
