Even at his age then, man, what a voice! He never lost that golden bass voice. Great artist and a great man.

A little fast but that may have been because of his age, breath control. A great singer and a classic song.

He held the long notes fine, it might’ve just been a jazzier iteration

Everytime we had a class meeting in the high school where I used to teach, there was a teacher who played this song on the piano. I think that was the most popular song he could play because he played that song slowly and deliberately. It was our favorite!

Used to have county and western music. The western music portion carried on the oral tradition of folksongs and ballads that told history before radio and television. This genre morfed into the " somebody did somebody wrong " style that morfed into "outlaw" country music which morfed into undistinguished entertainment we have today.

Some people say a man is made outta mud A poor man's made outta muscle and blood Muscle and blood and skin and bones A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong You load 16 tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go I owe my soul to the company store I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine I loaded 16 tons of number nine coal And the straw boss said, "Well, a-bless my soul" You load 16 tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go I owe my soul to the company store I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain Fightin' and trouble are my middle name I was raised in the canebrake by an ol' mama lion Can't no high toned woman make me walk the line You load 16 tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go I owe my soul to the company store If you see me comin', better step aside A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died One fist of iron, the other of steel If the right one don't get you Then the left one will You load 16 tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go I owe my soul to the company store

love this song but its a brutal version of it. Was he under a time limit?
@Charlesb884 жыл бұрын
I’ll bet that given this was for TV that the producers likely had him do at a higher temp then normal to get it to fit within a tight time space on the show. I’ve see this sort of thing done before for TV performances of nor Malloy slower songs where the singer was doing the song at faster tempo the normal leaving me to believe it was compressed for time. Unfortunately, it kind of ruined the song in all the cases I saw it happen and this is version of 16 Tons is no exception.
@SciTrekMan Жыл бұрын
Funny, I was just thinking the same thing. This is definitely his worst performance of this song I’ve seen. He did seem like he was rushing it and put none of his usual “oomph” into it. He seems to be just reading off the words instead of “performing” it.
