I’m right handed and loved to target shoot and was dam good before I had cataract surgery thirteen years ago. Soon after the surgery I developed terrible floaters in both eyes and my right eye developed a foggy dead spot in the center of vision. I gave up shooting because of that. However, I just ordered a woods runner kit because I always wanted a long flintlock rifle so I’m going to practice target shooing again left handed since I can still see good out of my left eye. Love your informative videos 👍, keep ‘‘em coming.

It amazes me how fast that rifle fired when the hammer hit the frizzen. I didn't hear fizz boom but a boom instead. I'm sure there is a split second delay. However that split second wasn't as long as I thought it would be!
@dennispritchardoutdoors78825 ай бұрын
It is pretty fast indeed. When actually firing it you can detect the delay. But it is very fast.

WOW! your lock's speed was sounding like a caper? she is a good looking tool. Thanks for taking me shooting. FYI Y'all, Ya'ALL my wife is an optics girl at COSTCO. Customers can order "Up Side Down" Bi Focals, or the traditional lower lenz is flipped to the top! I once had a fellow Sparkey whom used this for make up work overhead. But depending on a condition, "I think" this could help some of US open sights shooters? talk with your tech and dr. they "should?" know of these glasses. God Please? Bless! This Family!

I just went trout fishing on the North side of Pikes Peak. Lake was half frozen and it snowed. Fishing was great though. I remember my thirty years in North Carolina. Beautiful state but was Ike living in your mouth in the summer.

Dennis, the heck with shooting a target at 100 yards get ya a piece of cardboard shaped like a deer and paint a orange circle right over the vitals about 8" a round that will be good for deer hunting purposes IMO.
@dennispritchardoutdoors78825 ай бұрын
Good morning Sir. When I am load testing and-or sighting in a rifle I want as high a contrast sight picture as possible. A stark black circle on a stark white background, using a flat top black front sight, taking a six o’clock hold is about as high a contrast as I can find. I want to know how and where my rifle itself is shooting. After that is established I can move on to more realistic hunting practice. But for me to shoot at an orange target is putting my faith in pure luck. I have a red-green deficiency and orange is almost impossible for me to see.

Just wanted to mention I put 15 rounds on target with my new 50 cal wood runner. I figure I need to get more rounds down range before I dial in the sights. I mostly shot it off hand hitting the paper so I think I am of to a good start. I did swab the barrel a few times because the fouling was hard to get the ball down. So I was thinking I might burnish the barrel with 4 odd steel wool just to help the lans a little. I failed to follow my own procedure of powder tow lube a well lubed patch and ball. Just powder light lube on the patch and ball. I’m a real sissy my other 50 cal is a c profile and of course there’s recoil but this B profile I felt it and was only using 70 grains of 2F. I had no fail to fires. I was very happy with the ignition. At first I was using a little more than normal powder in the pan so it had just a smidge of delay. That pan is so big I couldn’t help myself i do know better. When I reduced it ignition was instant and mind you I didn’t tamper with the touch hole size LOL it worked as delivered just fine. I then had fun shooting my 1873. LOL it was a good day! Take care

I understand the struggles of less than perfect vision. I had cataract surgery on both eyes quite a few years back. You’re right it’s amazing the improvement but losing the ability to focus on more than one point sure hurts your shooting. My vision also fluctuates with blood sugar levels, so sometimes it’s really tough. The factory sights on my model 99 are impossible at times, I do a little better with the peep sight on my model 94. I use to love to shoot handguns but that’s another chore these days. I get by but scopes are about the only sure thing for me anymore.

Dennis, talk to a ophthalmologist that specializes in glasses for shooters they can help you with seeing better I have several sets of glasses depending on the type of shooting I do. Glad to see " no pun" your gun is shooting better heck for 40-60 yards on a deer 70 grains is plenty of powder especially swiss !!

I am 72 and have similar issues. I am putting a peep sight on most of my rifles. They were not unknown back in the day. That allows my eye to only have to focus on two points not three. I wear reading glasses for fine print. By trying different strengths I can focus at different distances better. That also gives me some eye protection at the same time. Flint-locks have been known to throw tiny chips. That lock sure is fast. Who made the lock? Thanks for the video
@dennispritchardoutdoors78825 ай бұрын
The lock is the original lock . It was made in Japan by the same company that makes Browning Rifles. It was made for Dixie Gun Works.
@johnndavis76475 ай бұрын
@@dennispritchardoutdoors7882 I see, it's a Dixie Mountain Rifle. So it's 50 caliber. Those machine made barrels had fairly shallow rifling That's why it's doing well with thin patches. Congrats on getting a fine rifle.
@dennispritchardoutdoors78825 ай бұрын
@@johnndavis7647 i don’t know of any rifle that was made to shoot patched round balls that have derp rifling. None of mine do. But there are more things that I don’t know than there are things that I do know .
@johnndavis76475 ай бұрын
@@dennispritchardoutdoors7882 Most factory made rifling is button swaged. They pull a carbide cutter through the bore under tremendous pressure and in one pass it makes a rifled bore with a snooth finish. The grooves usually run about 8 or 9 thousands deep. Some makers claim 10 thousands but it still looks like 8 or 9 to my eye. A custom made barrel with cut rifled grooves will usually run about 12 thousandths deep. Either way they can be made to shoot tolerably well when you find the right patch and ball fit with the right powder charge behind it. As I recall these rifles had 1x56 twist which is a little fast for a 50. You are probably going to find best accuracy between 60 and 70 grains of 2F. That's plenty of power for deer inside 100 ysrds. Congrats on a nice rifle.

You motivated me to break out my Tennessee poor boy in percussion last week. I got three inch groups at 100 yard but one group was far left and the other far right. I was cleaning between shots when I noticed the front site was sliding back and forth in the slot. I got it where it was centering the Group and used a spot of blue lock tight to lock her in. Going to take it out again with the old goes to see where she shoots. My gun is browned with a cherry stock. I can’t safely use my set trigger since when it is set, it is too light to safely shoot. I have tried to adjust it but it is either not working when backed out or too light when screwed in. Any thoughts?

@dennispritchardoutdoors78824 ай бұрын
I have both cap and flint. Much prefer the flint. Cap locks were in much use in settlements where you could get new ones if your supply got wet. Flintlock was the preferred lock in the back country. Just something very unique about them. And they do require a bit more maintenance nut the rewards are worth it. Thank you for watching and for commenting, Dennis

Which is more accurate. Your Tennessee mountain flintlock. Or the kibler??
@dennispritchardoutdoors78823 ай бұрын
@@mowoodpecker they are about equal as far as their best loadings go, but the Tennessee rifle is more picky as to what it likes. The Kibler shoots a wider range of loads with decent accuracy.
