Proof of concept prototype of my tennis ball machine. Works pretty well, but wheels have to be better balanced, there's too much vibration currently. Expect more videos - this is a build log!

Hello sir , Good evening. Is it okay to ask regarding on how you create the wooden wheels ?
@0bo0
@0bo0 4 жыл бұрын
Hello. It's not wood. They're made of two thick square sheets of MDF each, joined together with PVA glue to futher increase the thickness. This can be processed on a lathe to make a nice round lightened wheel. Them you need to balance it to reduce vibrations - just spin it up and try to add small weight on the rim in various places until it doesnt vibrate too much

Hello, were you able to compute the speed of the ball in the CAD software ?
@0bo0
@0bo0 10 жыл бұрын
Hi, max speed can be easily calculated from rpm and wheel diameter, but actual speed is much lower due to low friction between wheels and ball, ball squeeze, etc. Maybe someone who uses such software regularly would be able to simulate this, but I wasn't.

@@0bo0 Hi, first of all congrats for your amazing project and thank you very much for sharing your 2 videos. Technically delightful : closed loop speed control, bluetooth bidir communication, slope control,... I’m working on a similar DIY project, and would like to share with you some considerations on the *ball speed* leaving the ball machine, compared with *engine RPM*, In video n° 1 (1:20) , ball is flying from the baseline to first quarter of the field (approx 18m), taking off with a slope of about 15°. Considering usual kinematic laws, the ball speed should be something 18 ~ 19 m/s. IF( !) the ball and the wheels WOULD have perfect friction, they would have the same linear speed at shooting time…. with a diameter of 190mm, this lead us “just” to ~1900 rpm…. BUT you are using an engine of 5300 rpm ( much more than 1900 rpm!) My *questions* are: -WHAT is the “normal” rpm speed are you using for the “flat shot” from the baseline ? -Have you considered a different wheel material to increase friction ? BR
@0bo0
@0bo0 3 жыл бұрын
@@Giuliano1969 Hi Giuliano, thanks for the comment. I haven't used the machine since long time ago and cant answer your question about rpms (3-4k?). Definitely had to be much higher than what I was getting from a simple calculation. My plan was to put an continuous closed band cut out of an inner tube from an old car wheel onto machine wheels to increase friction. Having a closed rubber loop would make it more safe in comparison to a strip glued onto the surface. Another improvent that can be done with the stuff easily available today would be replacing attitude control dc motor with a stepper, use a screw with a trapezoid thread, and absolute rotation sensor (hall effect) instead of a potentiometer (or just add an endstop and perform homing procedure each time the machine is switched on, then count steps).

Hi, great job first of all... Could you please tell me how much is the diameter of the wheels and the axle spacing?
@0bo0
@0bo0 10 жыл бұрын
Hi, thx. Diameter is 195mm. I can't measure spacing right now, but it's between 35-45mm. Ball has to be squeezed to achieve high velocity.
@lk533
@lk533 10 жыл бұрын
0bo0 Thank you, that's what I thought too... So the ejection speed of the ball is given both by the wheels rotation speed and by the squeeze energy right? What's approximatively the range of rotation speed for the wheels? I'm doing a research on tennis machines for my University :)
@0bo0
@0bo0 10 жыл бұрын
lk533 I think that the greatest benefit from squeeze is increased friction and contact time between ball and wheels. If a ball doesn't slide during the contact, the speed it gets more closely matches linear velocity of the surface of the wheel. Maximum rotation speed this machine can achieve is over 5k rpms (depends on battery voltage). Such speed require perfectly balanced wheels. Mine are usable up to 3-3.5k currently.

This is an awesome/ reasonably simple design concept! I didn't know what the possibility of me getting some dimensions from you was? I have to use AC motors and have to have three pneumatic moves. So there will be design differences I will figure out, but I have no clue where to start :). I'd appreciate any help! Thank you!

Depends on many factors, in my case with fresh batteries it should theoretically work for almost an hour. Currently I use old batteries from UPS (see 2nd video) which have only one third of original capacity and that gives 15-20 minutes.
