Great. Thanks. Position, spacing, focus, eyes on ball. I need a little more than just telling myself to get the ball back as it used to leave me under pressure when my return was short and too easy for the server to handle and would take me out of a potential rally opportunity.

@@johnf9094 Right. High percentage target with an offensive high quality swing. Good things can happen.

It’s an easy decision for me. My goal on any serve return is just to get the ball back in play. 👍

That's a great goal to start with for sure.

Share please how do you approach serving. What is your mindset and actions to setup for your “+1”.
@webtennis14 күн бұрын
Be careful with + 1. It assumes you'll get a return of serve that you can really turn into an offensive opportunity. You might, but if you don't, too often I see players try to 'go big' on a +1 opportunity that's just not there. That puts a ton of pressure on you to consistently come up with a great serve. Just not realistic to assume you can do that. So my mindset with my serve is to focus on my target (a spot above the top of the net), finish the motion without rushing the finish of my serve just to get ready for the return, and IF the return is short, then OK, let's take advantage of it ... with the mindset that whatever +1 shot you play might come back ... and that's OK.

@ - thank you so much for the detailed reply. Do you have a video on your serve aiming strategy? I could not find it.

I saw Dick play the #25 in the Boys 18s in the nation at Oak Hill in Belleville Ill. in 1993 at the club open. The kid didn’t know who he was, my coach Bill Rusick did. The kid snickered at Dick when walked out in a warm up suit handling a Prince Extender racquet. The snicker lasted 3 point, the match lasted less than an hour. I have never seen racquet face control like Dick’s.

Just by watching him over the years and asking him questions ... Dick Johnson has taught me a lot about the game. Really miss him.
