Līgo is actually Latvian ethnic summer solstice celebration, so the chant you're hearing there and the way of singing is a very typical folk melody sung on midsummer's night. So this entry is 100% an ethno-bop

Loving Zelts and Sadzejot! Latvian indie is such a vibe, I'd love Latvia to make it more of their brand in ESC. Both are gorgeous songs in a beautiful language.
@shovkovskyi6 күн бұрын
to make it a brand/trend, it needs something to go off of - like a successful run previously... unfortunately that hasn't worked just yet... and when it doesn't work, people are less likely to try it again, but rather send something safe or something that has worked if not for Latvia, then for others...
@tallemajas6 күн бұрын
@@shovkovskyi Fair, but it's not like Latvia has really tried it. Aija was the first proper attempt unless I'm forgetting something, and I think the only reason it didn't work for them was that it was in one of the toughest semis ever in ESC. I'd just like Latvia to try and have a more solid identity in the contest and it does seem based on the recent Supernovas that they have the most to offer in terms of indie

Tepat - sadzejot for me. As a Latvian I think it characterizes our country very well. But staging has to be really cinematic (no band on stage pls) and indeed the ending with saxophone should be reworked a bit. Overall very excited about the selection this year. So many good songs. Proud.

Really loving this selection especially Zelts, Bur Man Laimi & Sadzejot. Also love the more chill aqua based songs Something in the Water and The Water even if they're maybe not for Eurovision. Even like Heartbeat; it's cute if a bit too repetitive. So much quality this year.

WOW! I’m really impressed by this year, a lot of songs that could potentially do really well at the competition My favorite one has to be Sadzejot at the moment, it just sounds so mystical and dreamy, feels like it would be very magical to hear live too Albeit I’m not sure how Europe would respond to it unfortunately, but it’s right up my alley and that’s all that counts at the end of the day haha

Truly a very good Supernova selection!😁So many good songs which would have a reakly good chance to qualify Latvia for the final!🤩But yeah,for example,I cam say that Grēta will definetely deliver a performance.She was the winner of Latvian Xfactor 2021 and generally has a very good stage presence.Also,Ramtai for Citi Zēni will definetely dance,do something through the beat. If about The Ludvig,then it is very interesting because he competed just once 8 years ago when Triana Park won and he is the youngest ever contrstant because then he was just 16.😅
@ESCTom6 күн бұрын
It’s so weird that I remembered him then. Maybes it’s because he has quite a distinctive artist name so that’s why I remembered him Greta is also signed to a big record company, so she might get some extra funding for her staging

"It sounds like Finnish" was my first reaction to Ramtai and also Ligo as well 🤣. To me it sounds like they are literally singing about sausage (makkara) in Ligo 🤯. Like i could imagine multiple of theese songs being in UMK or MGP (Norway) instead if i didn't know this was Latvian national final. Ramtain or Ligo probably should win, atleast if they want high televote score and secures final spot. Bound by the light could also be good with great staging.

Samanta Tina was internally selected. 21:07 Depends on how you count since 2023 is technically still last year. 31:15 In 2017, finished 2nd but hasn't returned since. 31:35 It certainly IS very different from his previous attempt. The song gives Girlzzzz from Vidbir 2022. I think Līgo actually means Midsummer though. 36:30 He has written Stay (Lithuania 2023) actually. 38:58 Including Justs... Who you've hilariously enough put after the song called Heartbeat 😂

Love your videos! Some latvian notes (apologize in advance for the long comment :D), no shade, we know that latvian is notoriously difficult to translate and that some of our sounds are strange/foreign to engllish speakers. I agree that we desperately need more songs in latvian in esc, but also I've still yet to hear a single esc channel say "citi zēni" right, but to me its really amusing to hear people try! For pronunciation, our vowels come in long and short versions, so a latvian A would be an "ah" sound, compared to Ā being an "aaah" sound, same goes for "eh" and "uh", while I is a like a short english "e" sound. O has only one way of writing it, but 3 ways to pronounce it, but thats not That important lol. When it comes to "citi zēni", most people seem to struggle with the C, which is more of a "ts" sound. When it comes to other letter additions like Č and Ņ, I like to think of them as "sticky" sounds. For example a C "ts" sound becomes a Č "ch", while a Ņ is like the n in "nya". Also we just had a very successful season of X factor a year ago, so some of the contestants in this years Supernova are contestants from there, such as Grēta Grantiņa (won in 2021); Tautumeitas (4th in 2017); one of the girls from Sinerģija - Madara - cometed in supernova with the song Esamība and won her semifinal and got 3rd in the final in 2018 and is still my favorite potential latvian entry ever; Katrīna Kovaļuka and Krišjānis Brasliņš from the duet KoBra got 3rd and 5th place in x factor 2023; Luka got 2nd place in 2023; Emilija won in 2023; Grēta Grantiņa won in 2021; So all that to say, this really might be our best of the best in current times! Some word meanings for the fun of it: Tepat means "right here", their song name is a verb for poetry. Tautumeita literally means "girl/daugter of the nation/people" but its a word we use to call a girl or woman dressed in our traditional clothing "tautastērps". The outfits of Tautumeitas are like a modern version of those traditional clothes, crowns and all! And their method of singing is a very old folk singing style, used to read and sing latvian poems and stories, probably much older than our written language itself. And their song "bur man laimi" means something like "conjure(create by means of magic) luck/happiness to me" Palú is not a latvian word. Domāju, tu nāc means "(I) think you're coming" and at least in latvian there is no naugthy interpretation, as nāc would be closer to "walk" or come by foot. Sinerģija means Synergy. The instrument they use is an old latvian string instrument called Kokle ("koa-kleh"). Zelts means gold. Līgo is a complicated one. It means both "to sway" or in certain interpretations, to dance or to be joyous, and is also the name of our midsummer celebration. but its also used as a filler word in our songs and poetry, almost more like a chant without a specific meaning to the word itself. Ramtai has a similar sort of chant-y vibe to it, without a specific meaning. Comparing it to Damdiggida is actually pretty accurate. But its also noteworthy that both Līgo and Ramtai are fairly old words/sounds that we use in our songs/poetry so its not Entirely the same as modern music gibberish too! Thank you for covering our national selection!! I'm always so happy to see that we can provide a lot of unique and indie sounds to this contest, which are definitely not for everyone, but at least its not a 500th ballad! :D

That selection was surprisingly good despite the overabundance of generic pop. My favourite is "Bur man laimi". Love the way their voices harmonize and the somewhat primal drum section. I'm also quite fond of "Bound by Light". As far as I understand, they are going for 90s ESC vibe, particularly, "The Voice"' 's and "Nocturne" 's. Not as good as any of these songs, of course, but, I appreciate the effort. It's quite stylistically rare in "Eurovision" these days. I also won't be upset if Citi Zeni win - which seems likely - even though I think the "dance banger in national language about some sort of folk dance" shtick is getting more and more overused.

Tepat: like them, but are they good for ESC? Markus Riva: not my usual cup of tea but clubby-ish Sinergija: interesting (I'm a sucker for traditional instruments). Kobra: my favourite among them all, but as you say, their success depends on them being able to perform that difficult vocals live. If they can, a great, intriguing song. Greta: not sure, but interesting That said, no song was outright bad. The possible exception is Adelina's. The beginning is very much "Sweet dreams" by Eurhythmics.
