I wonder if people knew upfront that this would become such a great rivalry the same way people already know (or expect) the Sinner - Alcaraz rivalry to be a really good one.

I felt that the Miami 2011 final was a huge turning point. Djokovic outfought and outlasted Nadal that day, and looked like the fresher player at the end. Previously Nadal hardly every lost big matches that way.

Interesting to see that the turnaround in this head-to-head started in the 2009 American hardcourt swing, when we mostly think of Djokovic going to another level in 2011. Ten of the next twelve won by Djokovic from 4-14 to 14-16.

Every time they faced was quarter final or up and a few round robin at ATP final. Today their last one most likely at second round of Olympics, a wonderful end to a great rivalry even though I hoped Nadal was in better shape.

Crazy thing is that most of the time Nadal was the only one stopping Djokovic on clay and Djokovic same for Nadal on hardcourt, because of this overshadowing its easy to not appreciate how good nadal is on hardcourts and how good Djokovic is on clay, Nadal made so many hard court finals, and semis only to lose to Djokovic

I hadn't realized how many times Djokovic lost to Nadal in the majors in the 2000s. That 2011 Wimbledon championship was really a huge mental leap for Djokovic, finally beating Nadal in a Slam. Nadal obviously dominated the rivalry in the 2000s being more experienced and unbeatable on clay. Djokovic seemed to step up in 2011 only to kind of regress the next 2 to 3 years. It really seems like 2015 was when we began to see the start of the Djokovic that would dominate the game for the next decade.

has to be said nadal dodged djokovic on grass and hard for years esp on hard, they always seem to play on clay which always suited rafa. since 2011 Djokovic is like 8-9 v nadal on clay, that is unbelievable. nadal didn't win a set against him on hard court in 11 years, the rivalry should be way lopsided in djokovic favour. considering nadal was 14-4 at one point djokovic making it 31-29 is incredible.

It’s clear that Djokovic was always the true champion. Letting frustration out in the heat of the moment is the best and healthiest thing to do, but people misconstrued it and said Djokovic is a bad sport because he broke a few rackets over his career. It honestly couldn’t be further from the truth, it’s the complete opposite. It’s how you act in defeat that matters and how you conduct yourself that reveals just what your true character is, and Djokovic’s was gracious and humble, which wasn’t the case with Nadal. Just look after Nadal’s first loss to Djokovic, his face expressions say it all, no embrace. Djokovic did a warmer embrace to Nadal in defeat than Nadal did to Djokovic in victory. Let’s hope Nadal can truly embrace Djokovic tomorrow at the 6 Kings Slam (win or lose) for Nadal’s last singles match as an active player on the tour.

The amount of time ND met Nadal on clay shows his overall dominance. You can only meet Nadal that many times on Clay, if you reach finals. And this is not spoken about enough. If Nadal didn’t exist, he probably would have been the best player on all surfaces.
