At the beggining everybody was against the underarm serve. But Murray gave the right point about it. you have to understand that tennis has always had this weird tradition of 'gentlemanly/ladylike conduct' that goes beyond just the rules of the game. that's why you always apologise after a net cord, or signal to the opponent that you're using new balls etc. No rule, just etiquette. that's why McEnroe was such a controversial figure; he acted exactly like pros do in other sports, shouting, yelling, having arguments with the umpire etc. You just DIDN'T do that before he came along. It was rude. Now we're seeing a shift of the same kind RE: serving. Underarm has always been legal but you just didn't do it. Now players are starting to see no problem with it

@kaisonlum9957 Жыл бұрын
I think that the underarm serve should most definitely be in tennis. When you stand as far back as Medvedev does on some returns, it makes sense to underarm serve. The only time I think it is not fair is when the fake happens on top of it.
@paulthompson9668 Жыл бұрын
The underarm serve is simply a way to keep people from stand so far behind the baseline when receiving serve. If I were playing against Nadal, I'd serve underarm every 2 or 3 serves to keep him honest. If anything, people should be booed for standing too far behind the baseline in the first place.
@zanido90734 ай бұрын
Yea you shouldn't be allowed to pump fake it. It's super abusable.
@anonymoususer5351 Жыл бұрын
I legitimately think the underarm serve is a criminally unexplored space. I'd consider most of the ones in this video "sloppy". I think it can be optimized so that with only a very minor wrist movement one could serve a ball with their choice of either heavy top or back spin. Even myself in my profound mediocrity can occasionally get one to have its second bounce land within the service box, but I think pros could do that consistently. And because of the ability to choose top and side spin, it'd be almost impossible to know if the serve was going to drop dead from back spin or slice hard to the side. Between the potential for optimization, variation, and the fact that opponents still expect a hard, traditional serve, I firmly believe the underarm could be developed to the point where top players could use it 20 to 25% of the time.
@The_Jazziest_Coffee Жыл бұрын
to be honest, the only problem with an underarm serve is when it gets *predictable* i think for a pro player who's going to serve, the worst thing you would want to have is to immediately give the point's advantage to your opponent, and if the underarm serve isn't placed in a good spot or is too predictable, the receiver could just hit an easy winner or a tough shot for the server to get back also, as much as i dislike the sort of stigma the underarm gets, it is sort of a nasty 'underhanded' move against opponents, especially if you're up with an advantage in points otherwise, i think an undearm serve isn't necessarily worth perfecting, and i'm sure there are player who prolly can utilise it very well. but as a secondary weapon to your first serve as opposed to just developing a better second serve? idk
@zanido90734 ай бұрын
You're correct that these underarm serves are (mostly) trash. Any casual rec player could do a better job than most of these. They're way too deep and high. Kyrgios hits a couple decent ones where they're very short with good side spin.
@kajetan9550 Жыл бұрын
While I do consider underarm serve as a completely fair play, I cannot say the same about the underarm fake. It deceives the opponent that you’re beginning the rally and meantime you hold it and serve normally when they’re not longer ready. Cannot believe there’s no rule about that. In badminton for example it is considered a fault, so called “double action”
@bernsdums6243 Жыл бұрын

@knotwilg3596 Жыл бұрын
I agree but on the other hand, the returner can avoid the trap by running into the court as Edmund did. The server can't complain about the returner not being ready in that case, because he faked him into it. Eventually it ruins the server's rhythm more than anything else. A genuine underarm definitely has its place in a world of returners like Nadal, who dodge serve bullets by standing between the linesmen and the ball kids.

Been using that one ocassionally, really hard to get it, even harder to give it a decent power. T, out wide, body serve, sweeping slice, late action slice (in baseball this is called a cutter), flat serves with high bounce/low bounce/english, kick serve out wide, kick serve over the head. That's just on the ball movement. If you are including the service motion you can also distinguish between the classic fed/novak style, roddick/kyrgios shortened style, and let's not forget the lefty slice out wide.... This can be like a 3 part series imo

A sport won't grow and evolve if we frown upon the creativity of the players, especially the young ones who's less constrained by older biases. I remember years ago when the young kids coming up to the National Hockey League did these cheeky goals when they carried the puck on their stick and looped around the back of the net and whipped it in, or the between the leg wrist shot goals. There were people shouting about how it was "disrespectful" and it's "showboating". But it's that swagger and highly imaginative play that draws the crowd who's probably seen every shots from every angles possible already.
@ovidragos5118 Жыл бұрын
Tennis needs variety and any type of serve is legal. You have to be prepared. Murray even called it, saying is legal. Forget about etiquette, which is a bull. Tennis needs also to create some more entertainment. Nastase, the bad boy was loved for variety not obviously his antiques. Bahrami brings tons of entertainment. I hit every serve in the book ,and reverse or Hawaiian. I taught it to several students with great results. Also the underhand topspin is a must(if you have shoulder issues). Twist underhand is also v efficient how you see it, but even in doubles. I made the guy at the net to run outside the court on the ad side to allow the returner get the serve. Also I can serve , righty and lefty (getting better on twist lefty too). Kick serve , top spin slice etc. Michael Chang , won RG bc he throw an underhand serve to Lendl , that really made Lendl angry. I see tennis not only as a sport but also an art. Having creativity and learning how to use it an asset. I didn't even talk about the drop shots but I love to do the craziest spins ...game on !
@joemarshall4226 Жыл бұрын
I agree. Although Lendl wasn't angry at the serve. Ivan came in and made a decent approach shot on it, What annoyed Lendl is that Michael's passing shot clipped the net, so Ivan missed the volley. Michael did not apologize, but it was not standard protocol to apologize back then. I used all these serve in tournaments. If I got down 0-40, I'd walk out to the single's sideline on the ad side and serve underhanded with a lot of sidespin into the ad court, then quickly move to the middle. A lot of times, the opponent would try a cross court drop, but it would go wide, because the spin gave the ball more carry than they anticipated. Another trick was to hit a change-up serve...big wind up, but tap the ball....into the ad court, and run in behind it very quickly, looking for a volley. the returner would often mis-read the speed, but the try to over-compensate by hitting a hard angled passing shot off a ball with no pace.....not easy....they would have been better to just massage the ball right at me or down the line...but the bluff often worked. When you do these things, it messes with their heads, and they will often make an easy mistake or two on the next couple of shots.

I hate the underarm serve for 2 reasons. First - servers don't need an additional advantage in tennis! Returners have a hard enough time returning serves to begin with. Second - it's hit during a time when the returner is not expecting it and the returner's attention is disrupted having to continue to look for it for the rest of the match. Would you throw a punch at a guy who wasn't expecting it and be proud that you knocked him out? Seems like a total coward's play to me... The FAKE underarm serve is even worse if they fake and then immediately follow with a regular serve. It's just trying to confuse the returner's timing and attention, no different than calling out during a point that interferes with the opponent's opportunity to hit his shot. It should be handled similar to a BALK in baseball...

"it's hit during a time when the returner is not expecting it" That's the entire point... Do you not understand why someone would do a dropshot as well? If a player doesn't expect underarms serves, maybe they should learn to because it's a completely normal and fair tactic to stop playing from sitting 5m behind the baseline.

@@Noah55555 I'm fine with underarm serve but don't compare it to a drop shot. A drop shot is played during a live point. You can't pause time and hit a drop shot whenever you want, like you can with an underarm serve. What isn't fine is the underarm fake, that needs to be banned. It's blatantly cheating.

Makes a video about different types of serve, spends half of it showing underarm serves, doesn't mention kickserve.

Someone needs to tell that dude to shave under his chin. I swear I don't think he knows how bad it looks down there. It's making me itch
