Last year of the real Federer, and i think he knew it. That's why in that year he came back on clay for example: for me he felt that 2019 was his last year at the very top and wanted to compete in all the tournaments he could. Such a shame that in that year he didn't won a GS! Probably if he'd won Wimbledon he would have announced retirement at the end of the year (he carried on, but the real Fed ended with the SF at the AO 2020)
@lukerne9260

He didn't. He knew it was one of the last but he had no intention or retiring soon. He wouldn't have retired even if he had won Wimbledon. If he didn't have physical problems he would still be playing right now. Injuries robbed us of at the very least the last 3 years of his career and possibily 4 or 5

Few, very few, human beings can truthfully say that they elevated and added a new dimension to their "field of human endeavour". Roger Federer is one of them. What he did may not have been political or scientific or intellectual or humanitarian but it was beautiful and joyous and wonderful to watch. And more often than not, that's all we need. Tennis incarnated itself in the Fed and he, in turn, created and revealed a new aesthetics for a most physical and athletically demanding sport. He is and will forever remain its gold standard, its magician, its most sublime manifestation. Thanks for everything, Maestro. 🙏🏽 P.S: I wrote this the day he retired and watching these highlights of him (when he was almost 38 y.o) only confirms that Fed was and will be tennis's "only true genius" and a never-before-never-again phenomenon. We were lucky to watch him.

@gf9262 no, your head is flat. I play tennis. I know the degree of difficulty of these strokes by Federer. Djokovic will be the most victorious in history, and mentally he is the goat. But no one handled a tennis racket better than Federer. He will be eternalized as the God of this sport. It will take time for someone like him to appear again. Alcaraz vs Djokovic is basically a physical battle, endurance, and mental (who resists for the longest time, wins) its amazing, but its a physical gameplay. Federer at his peak (2004-2007) wouldn't hit so many balls from the bckground like players today do. He finished the point way before that, with the class and mastery that only he has. We don't have anyone like that anymore. So we are watiching long rallies in every match, because everyone currently plays the same way.

He created lots of break points but had a poor conversion rate. On the whole, I'd say he was just short of being an elite returner -- way above average, but definitely not in the Djokovic-Murray-Agassi realm, which, truth be told, Nadal isn't either. The return department in which Federer was unmatched, even by Djokovic and Murray, was returning _huge_ serves -- the likes of Isner, Karlovic, Kyrgios. In part because of his return position: he would stand almost on the baseline and chip 225km/h bombs back at the server with his superhuman hands and reaction time rather than standing deep and hitting with topspin as is the accepted "optimal" method. This allowed him to take time away from the server (usually a big guy who needed an extra microsecond or two to recover) as well as cut off the exaggerated spin, bounce, and angle of the serve. Incidentally, Nadal is the weakest of the Big 4 against huge servers precisely because he goes deep and lets them create wide angles and high bounces. But he has still been a better returner overall than Federer for two reasons: his two-handed backhand and his conversion rate.

I'm not a fan of Federer, but whenever I watched matches on TV, it gave me great pleasure to watch Roger play, he always performed everything so easily and freely. Surprisingly, he always seemed to be running around the court a little, moving so slowly, but at the same time he reached all the balls, and managed to respond sharply and unexpectedly for the opponent. Others don't know how to play like that, and the same Djokovic.

People's GOAT''s can be whomever they want them to be as long as they were all standard bearers and absolute masters of that sport it doesn't really matter. My "GOAT" is still Pete Sampras. I respect anyone who chooses Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Agassi or any other multi-time winning GS champion. Winning those even once is not easy but multiple GS mean you are something special.

Roger almost lost his opener, was down BPs in the 2nd set but escaped, then a tight 2 setter vs Krajinovic, and after that, Roger just absolutely dominated and schooled all his opponents. The 2nd set vs Anderson was tight, but those last 4 matches he played at Miami 2019 were just awesome. Would have been really interesting to see Federer at this level play Medvedev at the level he achieved at USO 2021 (and during the 19 match win streak in early 2023). Oh and this is my favourite court colour on the tour. Fun fact: Roger Federer is UNDEFEATED at Hard Rock Stadium!

Federer was the most talented one. His way of playing the game was out this world. The finesse, the variation, his style, his magic touch. Take Rublev for example, that's all about his powerfull forehand. No variation, no smart balls, no smart dropshots, nothing.That's his strength and that's it. I saw Zwerev against Medvedev today, SM AO. It's sluggish, the way Zwerev moves. It's working tennis. Each his style but Federer, and Nadal are missed on court.

Everyone only cares about how many times Djokovic has won grandslam tournaments, but besides, extremely talented, and an awesome player, Federer has never behaved like others ( for example, Djokovic's issue with Vaccine prior to Australian open in 2022.) That's why he's a true legend, champion on, and off the court. And he's been humble, modest, and kind toward others during his career.

i agree. his most defining feature is he doesnt say much and lets his opponent speak after they meet for handshake at the net. he doesnt hit others when they are down. this is what i notice that is very different. he reminds me of a innocent child having genuine fun and beautiful creativity in tennis matches.
