I do believe Novak has around 24 more major trophies than Machac, so the win likely qualifies as an upset. The explanation cannot be "Machac is a better player than me," so some other explanation is merited. I didn't say Djoker is a perfect person, just that he is very magnanimous when congratulating those who beat him. What he says during the interview afterwards doesn't change that.

I THINK THE BEGINNING OF THE END... was last years Wimbledon final where Alcaraz took him down in 5 and Carlos didn't cave to the big 3 like most had done in past. That affected Novak in a profound way. I read he said that Carlos was the only player(including Fed n Rafa) that he actually feared. Then he goes down to Sinner in Australian. I truly believe that these younger players smelled blood in the water, n realized that they could be beat. Tennis is a huge mental sport. The big 3 have lived rent free in the youngsters heads for years, that have came and went. It's also not like even 5 yrs ago where the goats were truly jus better players than rest. These cats now who are ranked 100 or higher in rankings are beasts. They dont fear you and they are young and agile. They are mentally a helluva lot tougher than even a few yrs back. Nobody fears these cats anymore. I think the mental edge that Fed, Djokovic, n Nadal(Murray too) carried for so long is over. Once that's been snapped, the end of their reign is finished. And I'm a huge fan of the big 3(Andy n Stan as well). So it's sad no doubt. But time for new blood

"he will bounce back like he always does" (drops Miami) Monte Carlo against Ruud: "he had a good MC run" (drops Madrid) Rome against Tabilo: Water bottle Geneva against Machac: "he is tanking for rest, it is just practice". Starting with Casper Ruud who mentioned that he would relate to his grandchildren the fact that he played Nadal. Then lately, the younger players started asking for souvenirs from him like his towel, his shirt etc. And the crowd at Foro Italico's reaction to Nadal, even though he lost the match. I don't feel Djokovic utterly motivated... I think most people don't realize the internal struggle it is to keep working hard everyday to stay at the top. I've been software developer for almost 20 years and despite the fact I love what I do, some days, I would be ok just doing something else, just relax and do nothing. Those guys they travel, they wait for their matches in their hotel, they practice, they do that almost 9 months out of 12. I understand the players who retire early even when they are in good shape, because at some point it really takes on your mind. Honestly even for the money and despite my passion for tennis I would not trade my life for theirs, it's way less cool than you think.

So the good news; Novak looked great in his first 2 matches and hit some great shots in this match. Speed is there. Defense looks great at times and I’m liking his aggression and shot selection The bad news; this is his 3rd loss to a B or C player this year and it’s as inexplicable as it is inexcusable I love how Machac played today. To shake off a bagel and blow Novak off the court in that 3rd set was impressive but it also exposes Novak’s level of play entering the FO which is not even close to where he was last year Props to Novak for getting a late WC to get 3 matches in but still shocking how bad he’s playing this year I really don’t think he’ll make it out of the first week I think this is Zverevs year
