Hello! In this first video I'm doing a quick little improv on my new Harley Benton tenor. I'm still very new to the instrument so I'm just trying out different chord voicings and tunes to get my bearings. Any tenor guitar tips are appreciated!

That was nice to jam along with .... on my new Harley Benton tenor guitar ..!! 🙂 I'm loving this thing. I just swapped the stock CGDA strings for GDAE this morning. Still finding my way around playing in fifths but love how logical and symmetrical it all feels.

Wow congrats on the new guitar! 🤩 Good to hear it's inspiring! It's a great feeling for me to be a beginner again, to just try stuff and come up with cool new voicings. Thanks so much for watching!

I just got a Harley Benton guitar 3 months ago I have been impressed by the quality and tone .I have just recently got a set of Irish tuned strings . The fiddle tunes just roll of this guitar and I have never written more jigs and reels. It's a fun instrument and would recommend it to guitars players, banjo players and mando players.

Awesome! I did the Irish banjo tuning on mine as well, really great for me as a total beginner to this style of music as I'm able to play along to and learn new jigs and reel really easily. My current strings are getting a bit worn and I was thinking of maybe putting the guitar back in CDGA tuning with some lighter strings just to differentiate it more from my 6-string guitars for recording purposes.

Sounds amazing. What string tuning was that, Nik?

Thank you very much! It's GDAE :) I'm still trying to figure out which tuning I'd like to dive deeper into but this one seems great. I've also enjoyed GDAD for easy comping in D. Thanks for watching!

@@NiksGuitarThings Is the GDAE from low to high, or the other way round - EADG low to high would be bottom four strings of a standard-tuned 6 string. Likewise, GDAD the other way, low to high DADG would be bottom four of the DADGAD tuning. If you tune 4 the strings E,A,D,Gb (low to high) then playing regular 6 string chords but thinking of the middle 4 strings works. And if tuned E,A,Db,Gb (low to high) then the top 4 strings of regular 6 string chord shapes work.

@@squashfan9526 Oh right, gotcha! My tuning is GDAE from low to high, which if I understand correctly is like Irish tenor banjo. I've been able to learn a few basic Irish jigs on this tuning which is super fun. I got this tenor after having visited Ireland last fall, and I'm discovering new things on it every time I pick it up!

@@NiksGuitarThings Ah, so GDAE low to high, same as on a violin. Does sound beautiful, especially fretting high on the neck with open strings. I spent a week in Galway few years ago, most nights in local pubs with a varied group of musicians, couldn't get enough.

@@squashfan9526 Sounds like a lovely time! I only got to spend about two hours in Galway on our way back from the Cliffs of Moher to Dublin. Magic!

Nice one. Haven’t played a HB but absolutely love my Ashbury. I tend to mess around in either GDAD or GDGD. Looking forward to seeing more videos.

Oh thank you very much! The Ashburys seem nice. This is my first tenor so I don't really have a point of reference, but the HB feels great. GDGD is surprisingly cool, just started writing a track using that tuning the other day! What string gauges do you use on the Ashbury?

@@NiksGuitarThings I use packs of Gallistrings. .42 .30 .20 .13 I’ve done a bit of work on the Ashbury, not that it particularly needed it, but I’ve slotted the bridge for a bit more sustain and installed a K&K Pure Mini pickup which works really well with it.

@@scottjameswatson Nice! I'm also considering the Pure Mini for live use, either that or one of those clip-on condenser mics

@@NiksGuitarThings I installed it myself and it wasn’t overly complicated although I will admit drilling into a guitar is not the most relaxing pass time. The sound from it is amazing though.
