I don't think Tuomas was even wearing a mic and he had the sound to his earpieces muted during this song. I believe who you heard singing was Marco. What I read somewhere is that this song was still too painful for him to hear the lyrics during the performance. And you could tell how much pain he was in when he was singing those words -- mic or no mic.

First of all, congrats on getting this reaction published; out of all the Nightwish catalog this is the one song that gets blocked over and over and over for almost all reactors. Hope you react to the tracks off the new album that debuted last Friday (there are official lyric vids for each song) because you will be blown away.

I hope i can make it a bit clear, the song is about Tuomas (keyboardist, writer, composer of the band) commiting musical suicide so he didn't have to do it (luckely) in real life after he and the band had to fire Tarja (the first lead singer) and getting so depressed about all the backlash he got from Tarja fans as well as even de major etc of their city. Luckely he came above it with help from his parents and friends. Great reaction you were so spot on, and the beginning is a choir boy singing, so yes you felt it right :)

I don't think it was the backlash as much as having to cut loose his childhood friend, school mate and cocreator of the band. I'm sure the backlash didn't help, but I don't think it was the driving force of his pain.

In addition to what others have already said about the song, I'd like to point out the fact that from the moment the child whispers "Now I have three minutes and counting" and the moment Tuomas slices his throat with his finger on stage, exactly 3 minutes have gone by (+/- a couple of seconds). Tuomas is a genius composer.

"Be still, my son, You're home. Oh when did you become so cold?" I cry like a kid every single time I hear Floor singing that part. @Pitchblackbones4 жыл бұрын
I don't blame you for feeling that way for a moment, this is actually something that Tuomas pulled directly from his own childhood, as when he was out playing in the cold (for far too long) his mother would say this exact phrase to him to help soothe him. It's intensely emotional, and (as we can all plainly see) intensely emotional. It speaks to us on a level that we, as adults, rarely take the time to return to. The vulnerability of childhood. It guts me every time, too.

“I don’t feel happy”. Of course you don’t, this is the darkest song about the saddest event that ever happened in the history of Nightwish, the dismissal of the first singer Tarja Turunen and the big controverse following. The fans were really angry about what happened and put the blame on Tuomas. The fans really took it out on him and turned their back on Nightwish. The band lost a lot of fans and the whole affaire drove Tuomas into the deepest depression of his life so far because he had nowhere to go with his feelings. This song describes how he experienced it and is his most personal song ever. In the song he commits suicide and the pendulum is his weapon of choice. You should feel sad, because it is the darkest and saddest song in the Nightwish vocabulary. We always advise reactors to prepare for this song, and your reaction shows why.
@forkless4 жыл бұрын
"Of course you don’t, this is the darkest song about the saddest event that ever happened in the history of Nightwish" That's not the point of music or art for that matter. I get that there are fans that love to project the entire song on Tuomas' state of mind back in the day when all that drama was unfolding, but the music and lyrics of this song are so much more than just a pity party for Tuomas -- nor is he the type that would make a pity party song for himself, it's bigger than that. As you noticed the song is also a nod to Edgar Allen Poe, I suggest you read the Pit and the Pendulum story (it's not that long and in the public domain).
@galadballcrusher81824 жыл бұрын
@@forkless the lyrics clearly are related to the incident though and even that final part is basicaly the letter written to him by his mother that helped him overcome it ,besides the song has parts and that final part is called "mother and father" not to mention the poet referenced in the lyrics certainly is Tuomas. Plus its not just fans projecting when he said in an interview that at times on parts of this song on live performances he has his earphones off..... as its painful for him
@forkless4 жыл бұрын
@@galadballcrusher8182 Obviously it has meaning for him personally duh. He also metaphorically invoked the Pit and the Pendulum in the song' title which is a story about Nightwish in specific? if anything, artists tend to write songs for people to interpret themselves and or experience them in their own frame of reference just than that of the authors. While the letter for him is very much a literal thing, for us the listener it doesn't have to be.

@forkless4 жыл бұрын
@@ArtimusClyde That's one way to interpret my comment I suppose. I said some people like to use it as some sort of pity party. Nowhere did I trivialize the plight of people who suffer from depression. I don't think that's a joke -- at all. If anything Tuomas wrote this song with more in mind than just catharsis for his personal experiences during the whole Tarja ordeal. You know, like a message of hope for people who are suffering from depression. To show them there is light at the end of the tunnel, that there are still people who love you. That's what that letter from his mother in my opinion stands for, while you can interpret it literally and personally you can also view it as a more general message.

I just subscribed; for two reasons. 1. Nightwish. 2. You feel the entirety of the music so deeply and express so articulately exactly what the music is doing to you. As a person who needs music like air (I’d still hear it and sing if I fell deaf, as I heard and "sang" before I spoke, baffling my mother), AND as a major lover of words, languages, the images that words strung together in a specific order can paint a picture which you feel, just as music does... I hugely appreciate you sharing, in pictures painted of words, the pictures that the music is painting for & sharing with you, specifically. Bittersweet is THE perfect word. 🖤

Tuomas' masterpiece, perfected by Floor. That high part "Sparkle my scenery..." was originally performed by a boy descant on the album. Here, Floor somehow manages to sing it, and brings emotion, depth and maturity to the part instead of just a distant beauty.

@athlonen4 жыл бұрын
One thing I don't think was mentioned here, was that when the boy was saying that he only had 3 minutes left to live, it took exactly 3 minutes from when he said that to where Tuomas enacted the slitting of his throat. Masterful and impeccable timing there. Also, you'll notice that in the final act, you'll see Tuomas does not have his in-ear monitors on. That is because what Floor is singing are the words that his parents told him, and he wouldn't have been able to make it through the song if he heard them. So he had them turn it off his monitors and took them out so he could only play the music, not feel and be reminded any more of what he went through outside of playing the song anyway. That's why you see Emppu and Marko going over and standing next to him; to make sure that he's doing okay and that they support him, for they were also involved in the decision to let Tarja go. To my knowledge, I don't think they've played this song since, but I may be wrong. I know they have never, nor will ever play Master Passion Greed live, especially as they have been at least 15 years removed from this time. Tuomas, Nightwish, and Tarja have all moved on.

Thank fuck for not looking up the background behind this! and thank you for this reaction! This is exactly why people should not look up the background behind this song the first time listening. The song in itself carries so much power and conveys so many emotions, you can taste the darkness, the pain, anguish, self-loathing, despair, love etc. It doesn't need context to understand what it is about or give it meaning to for yourself and show how powerful music and words can be. That said, getting some of the backstory now -- I noticed some already filling in the blanks -- is a good place to give insight in the state of mind Tuomas was in before/when he wrote this.

You're certainly getting the complex nuances of this song, and that's good to see. In case it hasn't been detailed by another longtime Nightwish fan, Tuomas (the keyboard player, and main songwriter) wrote this as a response to the *PROFOUND* depression that he fell into following the firing/departure of their first singer, Tarja. Some say that he had fallen in love with her over the years that they were together, but life got in the way, she got married to another man, and her path led in a different direction from the rest of the band. Tuomas took this particularly hard, and I've read in many places (and I feel like he touched on this in some interviews) that he became bitterly depressed, and was at very real danger of committing suicide. He decided that it was his intention to carry on, despite the pain, but the only way that he would be able to truly move on was to either kill himself in reality, or to kill himself in fiction. That's why the song focuses so heavily around the fictionalized character of Tuomas, who finds peace in death (smile on his face) when the pendulum takes his head off (which the real Tuomas pantomimes in the video at 17:09) it's my personal understanding that he had been struggling to find the words to articulate his feelings about the situation, which is why he was left with 1,000 pages of erased text. Interestingly enough, I always appreciated the lines "The morning dawned upon this altar / Remains of the dark passion play / Performed by his friends without shame / Spitting on his grave as they came" because the band is acutely aware of how deeply personal this song is for Tuomas, you can actually see Emppu, the guitarist, standing next to Tuomas around 7:50, because he knows to check on him, to make sure he's doing alright. Tuomas has a tendency to be pretty stoic (besides rocking out) when they're performing, so I always found it very poignant that during this intensely emotional song, he's seen belting it out right there alongside Floor. To me, that comes from the heart. As I mentioned on another comment below, at the final lines of the song beginning at 18:35, "Be still, my son /You're home / Oh when did you become so cold? / The blade will keep on descending /All you need is to feel my love / Search for beauty, find your shore / Try to save them all, bleed no more / You have such ocean's within / In the end /I will always love you" is something that Tuomas pulled directly from his own childhood, these are things that his mother always said to him to soothe him, which I think is why they're such incredibly emotional lines, they're not pretentious, they're kind, they're loving, and they're real. This song never fails to gut me every time I hear it, but it's such a masterpiece, such a work of art from start-to-finish, I'll tell you right now, I'll be listening to Poet and the Pendulum for the rest of my days, and you truly hit the nail on the head, Nat. There's nothing you can do about it, this song is specifically crafted to wrench every last emotion out of you. It's beauty, it's grief, it's anger, it's rage, it's betrayal. It hits every major emotional touchstone. I'm very glad that you had the opportunity to experience it in this way, it makes all the difference. Great reaction. Thank you.
@j.f.l.bousquet19984 жыл бұрын
Tuomas managed to turn into music and words the feelings you have when you are in deep shit (emotionally). It's a mix of sadness, sorrow, anger towards the world but also towards yourself, you feel useless, you don't want to wake up from bed and sometimes you want everything to end because it will actually be a relief (or at least is what you think in you most dark moments), until you manage to "search for beauty, find your shore" and keep going with your life. And Floor Jansen gives the perfect emotions to the song, and I think she can also connect to the feelings in some way, she had a bad burn out for a year and a half before joining Nightwish and she wasn't able to sing, smile or do anything until she recovered.

You got the vibe from only hearing the opening intro. The song is just beginning. Tuomas wrote this song to make you feel this way, because he was feeling this way and being overwhelmed by his anguish and guilt from firing the 1st singer of the band. When you learn more about this song you will understand the feeling you are trying to grasp. Emotions ripped out is exactly what Tuomas intended in this song. Great job Nat! Spot on reaction if brief. I'll go first but short. Tuomas wrote this after firing the first Nightwish singer Tarja from the band whom he obviously loved. They had known each other since high school. She married another guy who pushed her in a direction the band did not want to go. He knew, said in lyrics with 3 minutes to go after a concert, he had to fire her. The fans were absolutely furious afterwards and he fell into a suicidal depression. His response for healing and not to do something stupid was to write this song. They don't perform it often and he asks the sound guys to suppress the lyrics in his monitors because it's so painful to him. The title is a reference to The Pit and the Pendulum... "...The blade will keep descending..." His own Mothers advice to him in lyrics... "Be still my son..." The guys came to him at the end of the song to show their support for him. Emotional and Floor nailed it. Always brings a tear or two.

The song "Master Passion Greed" is about Tarja's husband apparently. Toumas wrote it when he was VERY angry. They don't play it live any more as Tuomas doesn't feel like that now, but it's worth checking out. He isn't good at confrontation but puts his feelings into his songs, and that one is brutal.

Considering this is the metaphorical suicide of Tuomas, it would have been weird if you felt happy, this is a beautiful and heartbreaking masterpiece, I adore how Floor and Marko capture Tuomas' emotions when he wrote that song, the last high notes, sound like a siren mourning the death of her loved one, in this case, the poet, Mr. Holopainen, I'm very glad they left all that behind and feel much happier now ❤ I'd like you to react to their new album, Human Nature, that just came out a few days ago

'all you need is to feel my love' 'in the end I will always love you' … we want desperately to have those words spoken to us … but in the end .. our friends betray us … and we end up dying .. not hearing those words …

Your reaction was amazing, by your first pause you had got the sadness of the song. Of course the lyrics start that ...The songwriter's dead - but it's hard to hear from the choirboy's singing. You were a bit hesitant, but your gut instinct told it quite right.

The Pacific gets me too. I know a lot of people prefer Act V but for me Act III just beats it.

If only i knew that you want to react to this song i would have postet this earlier: The Poet and the Pendulum here are some scources. First of all the Open Letter to Tarja.Tarja's open letter (why tarja was kicked from nightwish) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJPOoYCdptZrprc Interview Nightwish - Tuomas Holopainen (part 1) at around 1:50min Tuomas explained a bit to that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poGnf3h_qZmXbbc Nightwish interview - Tuomas Holopainen (part 1) at 10:00min kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGeYXniom7qsjK8 Here he stated: Cathartic is a good way of putting it. The ultimate example being is The Poet and the Pendulum a song where i literally kill myself in the song so that i wouldnt have to do it in real life. At the Ende where all 3 (+1 the drummer he can not leave his place, here it is Kai but originally it was Jukka) stand together is for showing Tuomas that they are all with him, they all have signed that letter.

this song is about emptiness unfortunately .. the words from Hallelujah may help … It's not somebody who's seen the light .. It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah ..

a shame you didn't have the lyrics up for this to go with it (and the backstory), but its still powerful enough without. I remember the tears from my first time listening to this. YOu nail the emotion of the opening "this is what it was but not now...if you listen closely the opening of the track starts with "The End". The words to finish off the track are "the beginning"

watching you in part 2 being emotionally drained thinking "oh god, there's still part 4 to come..."
