The world owes Herzog a great debt, and he has just the right amount of spirituality and understanding to properly set these paintings in the right context.

First time hearing about this cave...just amazing and hearing it through Herzog just gives it the magical touch.

I found this movie to be one of great significance for me personally. As an amateur artist I've drawn on walls and have a sense of the "talent" these ancient artists had. They had only the most primitive equipment, charcoal sticks, yet there is shading and expression in the animals. You feel like you want to give the horses an apple, and feel the power of the lions, and sense their tension. It takes a lot of practice to develop this skill yet one wonders how they could have practiced. You don't one day pick up a stick and draw like that.

Indeed, as someone who draws regularly I can't help to think of them as colleagues. Confident strokes and really awesome silohuettes and shapes.

I’m sure I seen a short documentary about a Neanderthal cave find in recent times that shows Neanderthals were a lot more advanced then previously thought & not only drew cave paintings but made small idols as either toys or maybe as a educational tool to teach hunting knowledge? No one actually knows as none are still alive but it’s clear that they were not only a homo species but we as a species bred with them in the distant past & did multiple times to have certain populations that have Neanderthal dna & denovisions dna to such as the Australian aborigines who also made cave paintings of the ancient megafauna that’s been dated to 40000 yr old or older in the Northern Territory & Kimberly regions of Western Australia
You're not allowed in this cave. But there's a copy.
