Hey man! thanks for the video. I have a question about the dimension. Should we use B557 to determine an aluminum specimen dimensions instead of ASTM E8 or can we also use ASTME8? Another question is in ASTM E8 as you know there is a table saying Plate type, 40 mm Wide specimen and gives us the standard dimensions for 40mm wide as gauge lenght is 200.0 mm and Width is 40.0 mm and goes like this, so my second question is are those dimensions in the ASTM E8 is the dimensions that WE MUST use or can we also choose different dimensions from them? Ive choosen 35 mm width, 80 mm gauge lenght, 13 mm radius, 5 mm thickness and 50 mm lenght of the grip section for stainless steel specimen and carbon steel specimen do you think those are good for a specimen? And can i use the same dimensions for Aluminum specimen? I would be highly appreciated if you could answer! Thank you!

Hey man! Since it is an Aluminium sample the governing spec will be ASTM B557. You can go with a Gauge length of 50mm and width of 12.5mm if your material thickness is less than 19mm, which is only 5mm in your case (refer to the sheet-type specimen). Note 3 in B557 allows for smaller widths although not recommended. In the end the gauge length can be modified as long as the elongation % result is not required and your Uts, yield strength values should be ok.

why we stretch the specimen in both way even we can just simple hold one side and just stretch otherside?

Hi Yechang, that’s a good question. Typically one side is held fixed and the other crosshead alone will be moving.
