Tent camp in the rain and stay dry. Don't cancel your next camping trip just because the forecast is for rain. Some of my best camping adventures have been during flash floods and heavy rainfall. This video shows how I used my backpacking tent last weekend during heavy rainfall. I stayed dry, warm and cozy. On several occasions I crawled out of my nest and ventured into the wet forest, experiencing the beauty of the landscape, pretending I was an animal. (See David Abram's book, BECOMING ANIMAL, An Earthly Cosmology, 2010.)
My tent is a Eureka Backcountry 1, with floor size of 8 x 3 feet and height of 3 feet 2 inches at the center dome; weight 3 pounds 14 ounces. Last year I added a vestibule to the tent. It was cut from a ground cloth and velcro-ed to the existing rainfly. The vestibule is used keep my boots, backpack and cookstove dry. See • Make your own Vestibul... for directions on how to make the vestibule.
Videography by Ken Kramm, Sam Houston National Forest, November 2011; Canon Vixia HF S20, Canon PowerShot SX10IS. I put my camera and camcorder in plastic bags to keep them dry when recording the video.
