Hi you two! Big hugs and ear scritches for Indi! Birds are amazing. They remember stuff too. Some years ago a little chickadee looking bird flew into my window and stunned itself. I went out and picked it up and it was breathing so I held it carefully in my hands and kept it warm and safe until it woke up. It sat in my palms and looked around for a while, then fluffed its wings a bit and walked around on my hands a bit, then flew off to join its friends. Every year since then literally hundreds of them have come back to my yard every year for a few days.

New to your channel, I am so missing NZ, we cross the ditch every year for hiking and kayaking. Our March crossing has been pushed forward to November. Awesome!! Is this north or south island? Can we camp anywhere on most trails? (I know we have to pay of its a great trail doc trail?) i cant wait to start doing this with my dog :). Your dog it such a good doggie 💕 thank you for sharing these adventures with us!!

This is the South Island. This is on the way up to Lake Christabel, pretty much the only walk in the local area where you are allowed to take a dog, but you can't go past the lake as it's no dogs beyond there. In terms of camping anywhere, well, it's complicated, but not (lol). My understanding is that as long as it is not a 'great walk' and as long as there is no specific rule stating that you are only allowed to camp in designated camping spots, and it is public conservation land managed by DOC, then you can camp anywhere, but.... safety and backcountry camping etiquette comes in, and this is where asking around and following the lead of others who are experienced campers helps.

Yes there is risk camping alongside a river but It comes down to knowing your environment, reading the river and weather, having an exit plan, and calculating relative risk. On that occasion I was comfortable that the risk was very small, and the spot was very awesome.

Indi is 5 years old. She is short haired Border Collie crossed with black Labrador.
