Let's take a look at one of my personal favorite oilskin tarp setups. I will use the Tentsmiths 8 x8 oilskin tarp to put up a classic style shelter for camping. I have really enjoyed this Tentsmiths oilskin tarp and have been very pleased with the quality. I purchased the tarp early 2015 and have been using it since then.

Great video. The plow point is by far my favorite shelter set up. Usually I'm in a wooded area, so I run a regular ridge line for it. That way I have my fire right in front of me. Thanks for sharing, take care my friend.

Is this tarp still available to purchase? Every time I try to find a website for them it comes back as site no longer available. Silnylon are great for hammock camping and lightweight summer kit but sparks from a fire destroy them can't beat the traditional way, thanks for sharing!

Yes sir I was just wondering about the smell or maybe cancer-causing or something like that I know it would be quicker then dipping. LOL you could hang it up and just spray it. Hello Matt, very much enjoy your videos. I'm a little late to the party, here, but I'd suggest you take a look into the Farrimond Friction Hitch to see if you'd like to add it to your tool kit. The Farrimond holds and adjusts extraordinarily well but does not require you to wrap long working ends of the rope around standing segments to form a Taut Line Hitch (which you and then have to unwrap when finished). Instead you wrap a bight-loop of rope & it breaks away cleanly when you're done ... no unwrapping. Take a look.

@@theresamcpherson7352 You are welcome. It's worth knowing because it provides a quality adjustable friction hitch that avoids the awkward/cumbersome wrapping of a overly long working end. The working end can be hanked-up and stored neatly to the side. Happy camping.

That's awesome. Is there any reason you went with an 8x8 compared to the 7x7? Would you say you could fit 2 people in the 8x8 in say a plow point or a lean to, or would it just be too cramped? I'm set on the tentsmiths tarp but having trouble coming up with the size.

Thanks to Tentsmith for making face masks. Not making tarps right now. Oilskin breathes better than coated plastic. Maybe you could show Shawn Kelly your improved version. Thought it was required to eat a package of bacon to set up a tarp.

I am honestly not sure on that one. I wish I had a better answer but I have never tried it or heard of anyone doing that. I do know you can use boiled linseed oil mixed in different recipes to make oilcloth if it is a cotton tarp. There are several really good videos showing that process here on YT as well. Like it. I thing I would've done slightly diff is with your TL hitch in the back, move the hitch closer to the tarp so you don't have to dick about with so much extra line. Nice clear demo though.

...and when wind blows the pole goes down. Or when somebody unintentionally pushes it. Why not add another one rope? Why are you teaching making so unstable setup? I see it again and again - this unpractical unreliable crap on youtube.

I have used it many times and never had a problem with that. I have also used a bipod with good results and I have used one long rope folded in half and lark's headed to the tarp to create two guy lines, all with good results. If you feel better using two ropes because of wind then by all means, nothing wrong with that. I make a point out of sharing things that I have experience with and have used with good results. This is a setup that I have used on multiple occasions and it has worked well for me.
