This is an excerpt taken from the full-length opera of "Three Pleads For Fan Lihua" (三请樊梨花).
In this well-known legendary tale of a young warrior, Xue Dingshan (薛丁山) and his love interest, Fan Lihua (樊梨花), their marriage has to undergo several rounds of trials and tribulations before the eventual happy ending.
This excerpt is set at the scene when the remorseful Xue Dingshan regrets his brash actions for causing his wife's death. Unbeknownst to him, his wife actually fakes death to test his resolve.
