the funny part is that there's terminology that they're not using that would avoid this entire argument lol. revenue and profit. flash talking about revenue and teo talking about profit. both of them are correct in what they're saying. when asked "how much money you've made", the answer is always very different on what the person thinks to reply. a business person would probably reply with total revenue and a regular joe would probably reply with the profits made.

I gotta say, "made" is way too vage. If you earn 50k in a year but buy a car for 50k, you wouldnt say "I didnt make any money this year." On the other hand, if you buy a car for 40k and sell it for 50k you wouldnt say "I made 50k" but 10k.
@unimagin2ble3 күн бұрын
i think "made" just refers to the total amount of cash you have earned. even if you "made" 1000 and spend like 300 quid on stock or whatever, you've still made the 1000 and profited 700

7:00 This was a semantics issue. You both understand the logic, the issue was neither of you were using the correct phraseology. Teo, what you're referring to as "what we made" is more accurately described as "profit" or "what we've profited." "What we've made" is a relative term in this context, so while it *can* mean what you were getting at, it also works in Flash's context- frankly a little more accurately. "What we've made" can 100% mean the total gross Edit: and after finishing the video, yes meaning that it is contextual.
@Eilantariel3 күн бұрын
Total sum of money generated vs. total sum of money profited. Making is more referring to individual earnings when you close shop at the end of the day vs. generating/moving funds through a business. If your business over 5 years has "moved" 2 billion dollars from point A to point B but you only take home 5 grand you'd have profited 5 grand but generated over 2 billion. (this part of the video caused a SECOND heated discussion for the record being, cheers lads

Yeah but the reason Im more with Teo on this argument is that gross income as a information is entirely useless until I also know the expenses. Making 10k per week doesnt mean much of 99% of that goes immediately down the drain for expenses (extreme example I know) So when I ask Teo how much he made, I get the information I actually care about. I know "Ah that much he can now spend freely on other things". I know that he could buy a new pc from it or renovate a room. Id know how long he would have to save up to afford a car. Flash on the other hand gives me a entirely useless info that tells me nothing without additional context. What am I meant to learn from that? I feel like that part of the argument was never even adressed properly and they should get back and talk about that.

It seems like "make" changes meaning when switching from a business to a person. Business makes a profit and a person makes money (income). When buying and selling an item, the goal is to make a profit. At least one exception to this would be, as another commenter mentioned, that "make" in a movie context can mean the revenue rather than profit.

Having worked in both the restaurant business as well as in a supermarket, I can wholeheartedly say that Teo is dead wrong here. If anyone asked us "how much have you made?" or "how much has the business made?" that would refer to our total income. What Teo is referring to is profit after investments. The phrase would be "what have you profited?" "What have you made?" always referred to our total income before investments.
@guilhermebranco857215 сағат бұрын
the problem is that in colloquial usage if a business is "not making money" it means they aren't profiting, having a total income of 2500 after an investment of 3000 is seen as "this didn't make us money". Maybe it's different for people working in actual business contexts, but this is how I always heard it

In your example, the 50k annual salary and the expenses like rent, gas, groceries, aren't really directly linked.

Also when people ask "how much do you make" about your job you just say the expected salary, no way you can account for expenses then
