I'm kiwi born/bred and raised with Tongan heritage.. I grew up knowing more Maori than Tongan until I hit high school. Always considered myself Maori and was called the Maori of the family haahaha anyway, I don't understand anything they're saying yet it makes me feel super happy, makes me laugh and feel cheerful! If I wasn't Tongan I know I would wanna be any ethnicity that's super cultural and hearty like us Maori and Pacific Islanders 😁❤️

I am full Maori but my parents, who spoke te reo fluently decided that if I was to succeed in the white man's world I needed to meet him, and beat him, on his own turf. So I went to a pakeha school and, among other subjects, learned French. So I understand this person's comments easily but struggle with the language of my own people.
