*For English-speaking viewers!* When I first heard this song I thought nothing much of the lyrics, but reading deeper into them you can piece together a very sad story about a LGBT girl. The first verse explains how the girl first realised she didn’t fit in to her surroundings. “大人になるほど...はみ出しものです” means “as I grew older,... I began to notice I didn’t fit into my surroundings”, and then starts to identify as a male. We can see this in how the pronoun goes from 少女 (shoujo) to 少年 (shounen)- young girl to young boy. At this point we sense freedom in the girl as if she has been liberated- “少女は鳥になって” means “the girl became a bird”; I can imagine a bird freely taking flight off into the sky here. The first chorus is the boy proclaiming to those who fail to truly understand what it means to be LGBT. He talks about those who ignorantly talk shit about those like him, seen in phrases like “殺めた手で...” which means “with hands that have killed”, potentially referring to those that have killed bullying those who don’t identify as heterosexual. The chorus ends in a questioning tone with “答えてくれないか” which means “someone answer me”. In the second verse, he describes the journey of the harassment to the point that he starts to question his own identity again and identifies yet again back to a girl- “少女は花になって” means “the girl became a flower”. The trauma continues though and eventually gets to him/her, leading into the final chorus. The final chorus is a bit different to the first. Now, the trauma of harassment has got to them and can “no longer accept kindness” (“僕に感情をノイズ混じりのウォーアイニー” implies this). It has pushed them beyond repair. “忘れたくて喉を締めた” quite literally means “I wanted to forget so I tightened my throat”- which I think refers to suicide. This is further backed up by “こんな世世界じゃもう息ができなくて”, which means “I can no longer breath in this world”. The song ends in a very beautifully tragic fashion: “さよなら告げた現実に 許してはくれないか 弱い僕たちを また何処かで会いましょう” “In the reality where we said goodbye Can you please forgive the weak us And let us meet again somewhere else” Beautiful isn’t it? The transition from talking about her own story to those like her who experience this, and the lives lost due to people’s failure to understand that people are different. And the last farewell message saying “let us meet together again one day”. This also explains why the girl kind of looks boyish but is wearing a skirt in the short version released a year ago. This whole MV is an antithesis to the true meaning of the song. It is upbeat and the girl and boy are dancing as if this is a regular old music video. I think the irony in that is intentional and so well done by the creators, perhaps also symbolic of how the repression of LGBT ideals is not vocal enough in current society, and everything _seems_ to be okay. This is why I love Japanese music, and vocaloid songs like this. On the surface, they seem cheerful and pop, but beneath this facade they carry deep and powerful messages that challenges societal views in the 21st century. I am Japanese but have grown up abroad so I often listen to the lyrics not looking deeper into the meaning because of the hard phrases that are often used in vocaloid songs, but I am very glad I did for this one! Also, I love Sakata's cover of this song! I found out about the song from Amatsuki and I love how both of them add a different spin to the song 坂田さんのカバー最高です!これからも応援してます! And thank you for listening to my TED-talk lol
