Ed had a real nostalgia for the "gay nineties". Lots of vaudeville performers made rare appearances on Toast of the Town. This song is in the 1950 movie starring June Haver, Gordon McRae and Debbie Reynolds. So, in 1959, this was already an old song. It was written in 1918.

@@Williammunroe-sk7ke Thank you. I enjoy music and entertainment history. Sometimes the story behind a song is as interesting to me as the song itself. The feeling I see in early Sullivan shows is the audience longing to hear music from 50-60 years before. Much the same as today where people are nostalgic for 50s-60's era songs. Whether Ed made the right decision putting "Rosie" on in 1959 is debatable. No, I am not Pat.
