... I realize, Nabiu and Karo represent two totally different eras of RPGs and their playstyles super well. Nabiu is our obvious video game RPG player. She's excited to see the sights and ponder everything before her, and enthusiastically approaches just about anyone - after all, a lot of RPGs are full of characters to talk to that don't present any actual threat. Even when she's confronted by Possessed Grandma, she just happily lets her cackle madly before politely asking if she's seen the chair - likely because creepy granny didn't immediately initiate an attack. She takes so much at face value, because... well, usually those games don't offer you much of anything to say or question unless the game deliberately wants you to do it. She trusts the path set before her and it's surroundings... maybe a little too much. She survived the tutorial, she knows what to do, right...? Anything dangerous would obviously present itself as such, and fade to a battle sequence! Karo, meanwhile, is our TTRPG player. Not only is he older, but he's pretty baffled at having information regarding his stats and level just spring up, maybe because he's used to consulting a sheet or menu about it, or even taking notes himself. Unlike Nabiu, Karo has "access" to dramatically more nuanced social interaction - he can "roll persuasion" and lie to people, and otherwise obscure information about himself. And of course, he relies on a dice roll (the horrified scream when the dice rolls to a 6, only to bounce over to a 2 is just *perfect* for that anguished feeling) to do his more exciting tricks. His world has a more mature nuance to it - and he's clearly more inclined to run from curiosities, well aware of what trouble might be brewing before Nabiu runs up and presses the A button on it. His world is a complex one, and he can bend the rules a little - even if it's resulted in him being a bit sour for a carrot. I've watched this for, like, the 100th time, so... maybe I'm reading too much into it!! But whether this was a deliberate design choice or not, I'm really loving this attention to unspoken detail.

The elite guard might represent MMORPGs, where the story and characters are less important compared to the gameplay, since they hard-focus on the main quest at hand (capture karoto) and only interact with others in order to gain progress, not asking about any lore or worldbuilding that other game genres usually give out. Also, videogame characters have simple clothes that show their class, TTRPG players bring whatever works (represented by the shapeshifter die) and MMORPG games have epic gear to keep players engaged (have you seen that sword)

I’m guessing Brok (I’m calling him Brok since his hair kinda makes him look like broccoli) may represent either the Souls-like or the oldest fantasy games, like the original dragon quest or legend of Zelda. He doesn’t really fit the “not asking about worldbuilding” mmorpg description, since he seemed to spend a long while talking with the nice granny about her interaction with Karo, even thanking her for her time and eating one her cookies. What tipped me off though, was his design: tall, imposing, but with a tense yet ultimately non threatening posture; not unlike a Souls Player mindlessly exploring. He far more fits the bill for the oldest fantasy video games or simple tales of noble knights and the explorative Dark Souls genre. He is a green machine of a man who knows what he has to do, but is willing to go out of his way to root out the problem and take care not to step on the rose bushes. Karo needs capturing? He’s on it. He went that way, so he follows the trail. The Granny may know where he went next, so he takes time to listen to her tale. Thanks her for your time. A cookie for the road? Thank you. He’s someone who clearly gets things done, and he gets them done with pride.

My favorite thing in this was how "Show don't tell" it was. For example, Karoto's instrument starts out as a flute, then he gets a great roll and it becomes an electric guitar, and then it seemingly defaults to an acoustic guitar afterwards. This insinuates that he rolled bad against the guards initially, and got stuck with a dinky flute, probably why he is constantly checking on the die's cooldown in the prologue. I really like it when Rouge/Outlaw characters rely on luck, especially the way Karoto does. There are a lot of creative and fun situations you can take that in, like Karoto making the best out of being stuck with cymbals in the Lycan fight. Keep up the good work!!! This is one of my favorite projects you have done. Nabiu is absolutely adorable.
@nataly_1715 ай бұрын
A really cool "show don't tell" moment I noticed was with the echo rod vs the lycan. No words are needed to effectively communicate "oh, it isn't made of matter, so the echo rod won't work on it" and then you get to experience that lightbulb moment along with nabiu when she realizes it's possessing matter!
@gwen38225 ай бұрын
I didn't pay attention to that!
@victorvirgili44474 ай бұрын
I don’t think a flute would come from a bad roll, especially since a 2 equates to a simple pair of cymbals. Also, the flute was normal when the video started, implying it ran out of mana, while the cymbals lasted the whole Leyline Lycan fight and the electric guitar only lasted for a few seconds. I’d say the flute would be more of a 3 or 4, while a 1 could be something even worse than cymbals, like a triangle or a thingamajig

She took on Wizzro's quest without hesitation, explored the Hour Clock Woods with genuine inquisitiveness, accepted Karoto's help with elation, and she selflessly saved Grandma without thinking twice about it. And "Puppies!", she truly endeavors to find the good in Everything. One of my favorite bits of this episode is how we have no idea what's normal in this place, and how we can empathized with Karoto feeling unease at the situation. Our ignorance of the normal seems reassured by Naibu knowing who the grandma is and it being fine, until we realize that Naibu just missed *all* the signs. It's so well done.

It's a little thing, but I adore the progress bars under dialogue boxes to show when the action on screen is about to stop, and the scene is set to advance. That tiny detail is such a fun way to set pacing and adds to the style of this "game".

Then again, the 20-minute Smash Bros video has 30 million views, so that couldn't possibly be true! Right...? This feels like a JoJo stand with how defined its weaknesses are and yet it actually is a problem for Nabiu and Karoto because they are only good at each of its other forms, with energy form overwhelming Nabiu (the person that could close the leylines) meaning Karoto has to cover it and appliance form meaning Karoto can’t cover for it and could distract Nabiu even though it did not. Namely, this is a combo of Red Hot Chili Pepper and Aqua Necklace.

Going back to this video again and I just realized, while Karo is deceiving Nabiu those few lies wouldn't really seem like enough to get a +90 in his stats. Then it hit me that a good chunk of that boost must have come from the start of the episode where Karo deceived all of the guards by 'vanishing' off the roof top until he was in the clear to book it. After all he didn't level up until then. God the amount of detail in this pilot is amazing, I wanna see so much more from these characters
@kingcamelot1395Ай бұрын
Maybe it's not so much the amount of the lies, but the gravity of them. Karuto told Nabiu that he was a world renowned hero, all the while secretly planning to leave Nabiu high to dry and steal her masters teleporting chair. Those aren't some little white lies, my friend. He's not (initially) helping her out of the good of his heart.

I haven't seen anyone else mention this, so can we talk about how awesome it is that there's a timer bar for longer dialogue? As someone who sometimes struggles to read quickly, having that timer to know how long the text will be one screen, when to pause, etc., is such an amazing & underutilized accessibility feature that I have seen nowhere else! This show is amazing for so many reasons, and I'm really looking forward to watching the rest!

It's also something I really appreciate! Even though I'm a fairly fast reader, TerminalMontage's style being so snappy and quick (which is really cool!) made me worried that I'd have to pause for longer boxes. It helps SO much with the flow, to see when I do and don't need to pause. And the delays were the perfect amount of time too, not lingering too long nor just disappearing once fully typed. I think I only had to stop once, moreso because my brain skipped a beat and I got confused misreading something entirely by my own oops.

I cannot express how much I fucking love the way the dialogue is expressed through timed text. The delay is not too long, but always gives plenty of time to read. But more importantly, it gives it a comic book feel, which is crazy, because it feels like I'm WATCHING a comic book. I dont if its a weird thing to fall in love with, but it definitely captured my attention insanely well, which is great. Good video in general too, I liked the final boss, Karoto and Nabiu did not look like they were going to beat it in combat, but then they had the option to run, the boss is so fast and dangerous and they have to win with the handicap of protecting someone, it was an intense battle.
