Terne roofing metal was commonly used in the earlier 20th century. Coming from Follansbee Bros Co. in WV, you will see this material in town after town in the historic areas of the Mid-Atlantic.
Craig Hardin from Hardin Exteriors explains what he has learned about Terne. Have you had any experience with this material?

Sorry about not answering the question regarding life expectancy. I believe I was trying to get there and ran off coarse. These roofs can easily last 100+ years with proper maintenance. There are still many terne plate roofs that exist today.

Fascinating, thanks for the history lesson. I wonder if the 28" length* had anything to do with the available sheet size at the time that I think was 30" x 60? All the old stomp shears are 30" wide so you could get 3 pieces 20 x 30 from one sheet which would yield 28" after squaring and hemming to lap and solder. *edit- Typed width, changed to length.
