I arrived at the cliffs of Ixthera V under a canopy of swirling mist. From orbit, this planet appeared as a sprawling emerald jewel in the Zentar Nebula. Yet no orbital survey could have prepared me for what awaited below: a labyrinthine jungle fused with colossal towers that seemed to grow from the cliffs themselves.
The structures, if I can call them that, are not wholly artificial. They are built into the rock, their metallic frameworks intertwined with massive roots and vines. Nature and architecture have become inseparable, creating a harmony that feels both deliberate and timeless.
I climbed to one of the terraces today. The air is thick and humid, saturated with the scent of moss and blooming alien flora. Every breath carries a faint tang of minerals, a reminder of the unusual chemical makeup of Ixthera’s atmosphere. My instruments show high levels of chromium and vanadium oxides, likely giving the soil its peculiar greenish-black hue. The gravity here is marginally stronger than Earth’s, making every step more deliberate, every climb more taxing.
The towers are ancient, that much is clear. Their outer surfaces bear intricate carvings-patterns that resemble both geometric precision and the randomness of natural erosion. Yet these carvings glow faintly at night, pulsing with a rhythm that doesn’t match the planet’s known energy cycles. Some kind of dormant power source, perhaps? I attempted to scan for energy signatures, but the results were inconclusive, disrupted by interference from the dense vegetation.
The silence here is profound. Apart from the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant calls of unseen creatures, it feels like the world itself is holding its breath. And yet, there is a subtle unease-a feeling that I am being watched, though every scan shows no signs of sentient life. The original inhabitants of these towers are long gone, their fate as enigmatic as the structures they left behind.
The descent to this world wasn’t without difficulty. My shuttle’s landing thrusters faltered during entry, likely due to the high concentrations of ionized particles in the atmosphere. Repairs will take days, possibly weeks, leaving me stranded in this verdant solitude. But perhaps that is for the best. There is much to learn here, and time feels different on Ixthera.
I sit now on a moss-covered ledge, overlooking the towers as the mist thickens. It curls and flows like a living thing, swallowing the lower levels of the jungle. Above me, the overcast sky glows faintly with the reflected light of the system’s dying star, Vetras. In moments like this, I’m reminded of something from my academy days: “To explore is to embrace the unknown, not as a problem to solve, but as a mystery to live.”
Tomorrow, I will venture further into the towers, seeking answers that may never come. But tonight, I am content to sit here and marvel at the beauty of a world untouched by time, where nature and history are one.
