My older plants are in terracotta, because 20 years ago it was more cheap. The younger or with less than 15 years are in big or medium plastic or cement pots. I don't see any difference, but once I've tried to move an older to a plastic pot and she was not doing well, so I had to take her back to the terracotta pot. I don't buy too much, cause I don't have money lol So I rescue plants from lots of different places, - ppl don't care much about plants, they just put them off to garbages and streets - so, I take them and bring home and make sure that they will get their best, as long as I can. Ty for the information, buddy. (=

What a great video! Much better than TV! Everything you say about your amazing plants and pots is interesting. Here in UK we are being encouraged to re-use any garden plastic instead of sending it to landfill. A big move to recyle the plastic too. However most recycling plants cannot recognise black plastic so that goes to landfill for ever. The industry is using different colours so the pots are recognised and can be recyled. Also they are using different material for the pots e.g. bamboo, already recycled plastic and coir products. These will obviously break down after a few years but are much better for the planet! I love your collection of pots! Good frostproof terracotta is very expensive here in England so I have to put my empty ones in the shed or garage for the winter. Outside ones with plants in can be bubbled wrapped or similar. One last thing - to make sure the inner pot doesn't touch the bottom of its cachepot, I stand it on plastic milk bottle tops. Saves it standing in water.
@onlyplants3 жыл бұрын
Whoaa great tips thank you! Good insight on recycling too didn tknow that black ones cannot be detected!

holy moly shawn!!! I am constantly amazed by your passion for plants and I am glad to see you sharing your tips online. In terms of buying plant pots in a sustainable way, reuse of the pots you currently have is the best option, and buying from local artists/sellers is good to reduce unnecessary shipping costs. By buying nice pots you really like, you'll make them last longer, and that includes plastic pots, even though they're not great for the planet. If a plastic pot breaks, be sure to recycle it; if a terracotta pot breaks, use the shards as drainage or use them at the bottom of pots to stop soil from washing out when you repot. Super great work, as always!!! Best wishes.

I prefer terracotta pots any day; they look so much more pleasing in my opinion, and worth the hassle of extra watering and cost. I don't agree it is 'ridiculous' to put a terracotta pot inside a cachet pot. I use a lot of plain terracotta pots for planting in and sometimes place them inside a cachet pot for a change, or decoration, or to protect the surface the pot stands on. Terracotta feels a natural extension to the soil the plant is in and I prefer managing my plants in them. A great video, thank you.

I love this discussion and I have noticed my house plant experience has improved based on my knowledge of which pot I use with which plant. When I was a "beginner" I learned through trial and error with over watering and how fast a plant will dry out depending on the pot they are in. I experienced a lot of root rot because of this (ugh). Because of this I think it is best for beginners to use terra cotta especially if they are "helicopter plant parent" like me! Thank you Sean this video was great!
@onlyplants3 жыл бұрын
Whoaaa high five on that. I definitely think terracotta is more forgiving to beginners because overwatering is very very common.

15:27 I am also in a warm humid environment, and when I buy new plants, I usually need to downsize the pot, swap the peat moss for an airy mix, and swap the plastic pot for teracotta. Otherwise they stay wet for weeks to months (when kept indoors in medium light).
@onlyplants3 жыл бұрын
I hope nurseries and sellers take note of this and downsize accordingly... they ship better and cost less overhead too.

@@onlyplants They may have done it to make a profit (4 inch plant in a 6 inch pot is more expensive). Great videos as always... The excess salts flowing through a terracotta pot and drying on the outside of it is a good thing instead of building up in the soil of a plastic pot. Also, having to water more frequently is good because you're supplying more oxygen to the roots. Cuts down on anaerobic activity in the bottom of the pot.

Peperomia does great for me in plastic, during summer, but in winter, they need the terracotta to avoid root rot. I gave up on peperomia considering I couldn't keep them alive in winter. Terracotta was my last shot and happy to say, a very successful one! I should try philodendrons with terracotta next, because I do love them. But was having the same problems with root rot, during winter. I was happy to see you mention, the philodendrons success in your collection, in terracotta. So there's hope for me yet.
