I was watching an old video from Eric's Hobby Workshop two days ago and he mentioned this channel and the fact that it was on hiatus but was still a must watch channel for terrain. And there have been at least two other terrain channels that have mentioned The Terrain Tutor as their first and main teacher. I honestly feel lucky to be getting into this part of the hobby when Mel is back with new material to dig into. And I've been looking into mangrove swamps, so even this video is dropping at the perfect time. PS. The term you were looking for is "water soluble".

You know what, I HAVE really missed your content. I don't play wargames, though I did make some terrain for fun some years back. But your content is just so relaxing, and I'm impressed not only by your skills, but the way your enthusiasm shines through. I have struggled greatly with CPTSD and deep depression over the years, and I'm partially disabled because of it. I watch your videos because of the terrain content, but I have no doubt your openness about mental health is a positive way to create awareness. Mental illness is so often invisible, and people don't realize it's every bit as real and pulverizing as broken bones and amputated toes from trenchfood.

I find that the expectations that I set for myself will sometimes make me put a project on a backburner or drag it out longer than it needs to be. I think it's because sometimes I didn't do something to my own expectations or I agonize about whether the next step is going to have the perfect effect or whatever. if I instead look at a project as something that needs to be ready for play over the weekend / week / whatever and I accept up front that getting it done decently in reasonable time is a higher priority than getting it perfect I'm able to get so much more done and have so much more fun. I still do a small number of projects to the highest standard I'm capable of but it turns out that 'fast and decent' isn't that far from my very best anyways and I can touch up things I don't like if I want after they're "done". Anyways, it's funny how much we can analyze the psychology in this hobby but I just wanted to share what's been working for me personally lol.

One of the hardest things to do with projects like this is to define the finish point, then recognize when you've reached it. You could work on the same project for the rest of your life and never "finish" it if you don't define your endpoint. I think reaching that step will be incredibly helpful for you both now and in your projects to come _cough_ shelf display board _cough_.

We have no idea what is going on in Mel's life, or with his mental health, at the moment, so please don't be so quick to judge. In his deleted video, he was talking about the imminent risk of losing both his home and his workshop. He did thank his viewers with his last community post, saying that the donations had helped (at the time, at least) - and perhaps that written message is all he's been able to muster at the moment. We don't know the impact of this whole situation on him, and you may just be kicking a guy while he's down. Mel has clearly stated the struggles he has with his mental health over the years. We have no idea how deep within himself he has to dig in order to put out content at the best of times, let alone in times of crisis. He may well have removed his "Help!" video (on the day it was posted) out of feelings of doubt, shame, guilt, for posting it in the first place. That's what modern society does to us - piling on the blame and "failure" for looking to each other for mutual aid and community solidarity - for not being able to "make it on our own". That's how the system pushes each and every one of us down into the dirt - divide and conquer - and you're here doing its job for it. I don't know what Mel's sources of income are (and nor should I) but, if KZbin has been his main earner... well, it's a really tricky and unreliable medium for many content creators to succeed at, at the moment. Just look at Tabletop Time, in Australia - a whole team of creators, supported by YT legend Jazza! - which has been on the edge of folding, and currently being propped up by viewers, Patreon memberships, and the support of fellow KZbinrs like Nerd Forge and Miscast, after a recent call out for help. Mel's here doing this on his own, without the mutual support of a team, and without other KZbinrs rallying around him.
