Small tip: You can use furniture to block to doors from opening inward which in turn prevents most invasions from getting in to your homes while still letting yourself and other NPCs in. I personally use the required chair to block my doors. The only exceptions are enemies that break down doors all together and special abilities like Reapers that don't care. Maybe I should figure out how to make sentry friendly homes to better defend when monsters do get in.

the hoik trick (the easy 3 platforms stacked on top of each other and each hammered into staircases leading "up to" the wall) makes it possible to very easily make "one-way walls" that you and, iirc, even summons and sentries can shoot through. They even work while the platforms are actuated, somehow.

i just put blocks in front of the doors that prevents enemies from breaking them down and prevents the npcs from getting killed

With wire and actuators, just have a small lava bridge outside your house. Have the actuators also toggle a wall in front of your door. Memory serves, it's 13 blocks for a bucket so coins don't burn in lava. NPCs don't wander outside because lava, and you passively get drops (although in hard mode it can be a bit slow -.-)

the reason why I don't build houses with doors and instead do boxes inbedded into the ground (but them being short enough that you can still reach the npcs inside) since I level out the spawn quite a bit to both sides for it to be an arena for...whatever I'm going to do
