Simple: with the whole NPC housing mechanic's rules, we can deduct that NPC's don't care if their houses are these tall and thin rooms with no doors. They only care about the environment they're living in, and who they're living with.

The reason the weird S design house worked is because litterally any shape works as long as you meet the basic requirements, and one of those is that an npc has a clear 2 by 3 area to stand in (platforms are counted as blocks when calculating house space by the way, so they can obstruct this spawn area), and the too big rule is probably to prevent absurdist designs, such as making the entire world or an entire biome a room.

Normally, if you leave background walls unfilled, it doesn’t count as valid housing. But, in the super tall houses, if you make 2 horizontal strips of wall that aren’t connected, then it counts as a full background wall.

I built luxury rooms for each NPC in 1.3 After 1.4 arrived with happiness update, things got ruined. All NPCs were complaining about each other's behaviour and all. No matter how much room I gave them, they still continued to do the same. So I got a new world and built 4 houses in each biome. I noticed they introduced pylons where you can travel the same biomes without any risk. That's a good update but all NPCs being together was actually nice tho.. 🙄

Here's how it works: The amount of "air" tiles must be 60 or more(if I'm right) There must be background walls, a chair, a table and a light source There must be at least one full tile for NPCs to stand on There must be any type of exit from the house. So, you can make a tall but narrow house using a lot of platforms and 1 wood
