Make a "bedroom" within the bigger nice house, that counts as the npc room, this they still have the nice house, but also have a smaller "suitable house" to the games coded likings.

My favorite NPC prison design? The absolute minimum amount of blocks, workbench table, one single platform at the top-middle block for the door, ONE torch 3 blocks away from the top.

I really hate when they wander, so I usually make a bunch of pit homes in the ground then build a hallway with a platform floor across the tops of them. Platform is too high for the NPCs to jump out of so they're forced to sit in their prison cells waiting for my business.

me and my friends like torturing the angler, in a calamity playthrough, we put his house in the arena, and constantly killed him using the DoG, then in a normal playthrough, we got spikes and iron fences and made his house in hell.

Simple: with the whole NPC housing mechanic's rules, we can deduct that NPC's don't care if their houses are these tall and thin rooms with no doors. They only care about the environment they're living in, and who they're living with.

“The room is too big” should be if the room is 150+ tiles wide or high, not that size.

I love doing tiny lovely houses, never miss a bed or some food. Thing I always asked myself actually is, how do npcs survive? They hunt? They eat from the environment? Do they eat the remains of what you kill? Definitely would love some in deep meaning on how a Terraria world and his its npcs work

As evidenced by the player, people in Terraria don't need to eat to survive, but they can eat for social reasons (party cake, tavernkeep's ale) or to gain buffs like the player

The reason the weird S design house worked is because litterally any shape works as long as you meet the basic requirements, and one of those is that an npc has a clear 2 by 3 area to stand in (platforms are counted as blocks when calculating house space by the way, so they can obstruct this spawn area), and the too big rule is probably to prevent absurdist designs, such as making the entire world or an entire biome a room.

Normally, if you leave background walls unfilled, it doesn’t count as valid housing. But, in the super tall houses, if you make 2 horizontal strips of wall that aren’t connected, then it counts as a full background wall.

In Minecraft, you don’t even need houses to make a “village”. You just need some beds, farmland, and composters, and you’re good to go.

I built luxury rooms for each NPC in 1.3 After 1.4 arrived with happiness update, things got ruined. All NPCs were complaining about each other's behaviour and all. No matter how much room I gave them, they still continued to do the same. So I got a new world and built 4 houses in each biome. I noticed they introduced pylons where you can travel the same biomes without any risk. That's a good update but all NPCs being together was actually nice tho.. 🙄

Here's how it works: The amount of "air" tiles must be 60 or more(if I'm right) There must be background walls, a chair, a table and a light source There must be at least one full tile for NPCs to stand on There must be any type of exit from the house. So, you can make a tall but narrow house using a lot of platforms and 1 wood

I found it funny as well, as I was making a castle, I made the outer walls, bg walls and got bored in making rooms for a bit, I placed a torch, a chair and a table for my npc that is currently stuck in the abyss looking for comfort, and he just doesn't want to move in XD.
