The concept actually looks very good. It seems that cleaning the corruption is a main focus of the game and provides items that (as long as they are up), continuously and permanently purify the land, which is just an amazing concept that I always wished to be in regular Terraria. Unless someone uses the clentaminator and digs tunnels to prevent reverse spread, there is no real way to combat it. The graphics appear to be not everyone's cup of tea but remind of RPGs and early indigames to the likes of Cavestory.

Yeah I wish battling the corruption was a bigger part of Terraria, and it seems Red did as well. Judging from the trailer, it looks like you would've had to defend the crystal, which reminds me a lot of the Old One's Army. I like the Old One's Army, but a lot of other people seem to dislike it, so maybe poor playtester reception is the reason Otherworld got scrapped, and they repurposed the idea into Old One's Army.

Old One's Army is based on Dungeon Defenders. Nothing to do with Otherworld. And playtester response isn't why it got canned. As you say, though, parts of Otherworld did appear to have a tower defense style of gameplay going on.

In all honesty, I think it was a good idea that Otherworld didn't come out, and Re-Logic instead focused on a big Terraria update. Although Otherworld looked good, I just feel like it was trying to be something it wasn't, which is the original Terraria. If the game was being developed in the way I believe it was, it would've been Terraria but just with some new content and mechanics, while keeping the core gameplay of Terraria. In that sense, the development of Otherworld probably would've overshadowed that of Terraria, which I feel would be sort of throwing away any potential that Terraria still had. To me, anyways, it would have been like making a Minecraft 2. What's the point of making a new game that's almost the same as the original game, when the original game is just fine, and has much more potential to be improved. This is my opinion, anyways. Edit: I made this comment 10 months ago, when I had just found a love for terraria for the first time. Since then I've logged roughly 700 hours (and counting), and now that I've played the game front to back, I can understand why long time players were so eager about this game's release. Putting it short, it would have been a breath of fresh air for a game some had been playing for years (especially with the new art style). I do, however, still stand by my original point, but just wanted to reminisce as a now seasoned player of the game. (Also edited my original statement to make a bit more sense.)

Rewind Gamecast - Maybe that's true for most, but not me. I've never been much of a Minecraft fan. Terraria is the sandbox game to end all sandbox games. Starbound is Terraria on steroids, minus the immense enjoyability. And Terraria: Otherworld? It has no idea what it's trying to accomplish, or who its role model is. I don't think it will flop, but it won't enjoy the 97% rating out of 68,000+ reviews that Terraria has.

I'm hoping that the fact that Terraria Otherworld doesn't have a specific role model gives it its own unique taste. It's true that it probably won't be as successful as the original Terraria. I just feel that people sometimes hate too much on games based on first assumptions (aka GRAPHICS) and then don't even care about their other attributes. I personally think I'll get this game and see what it is like, whether or not it's on par with Terraria.

A long time ago, Relogic started work on a game called Terraria: Otherworld. Sadly, due to a number of problems during the development of the game, Relogic was forced to cancel it, after a long and troubled development cycle with numerous radio silences. However, Redigit, the president of Relogic, has stated that if he can get 100,000 signatures and 15 dollars, he will open-source the game. I will cover the 15 dollars myself, but it's up to the community to help get enough signatures. This could allow people to see what Terraria: Otherworld could have been. Once it is open-source, modders and developers can work to finish the game themselves, and perhaps people can finally get to see the dream of Terraria: Otherworld realized in a playable form.

what's wrong with people saying that they don't like the graphics... they are amazing Terraria has it's own art style and Terraria: Otherworld has it's own artstyle and they both have their own feel to them. obviously a lot more work went into the Terraria: Oherworld's art as it uses much more pixel animations and the animations are much smoother (it's also less afraid to use particles...)

I think the animations could use some work. The movements sometimes feels like it's some flash game. And something seems off about the player character design. The graphics themselves are no problem. I come back to this trailer every couple of months and let myself dream of what could have been. I really love the idea of needing to purify the world and making bubbles of safe areas in an otherwise hostile world. I also really love needing to have automated defenses to defend from the inevitable incursions to prevent my purification efforts and those ramping up over time. I really hope that Terraria 2 will have those things, becoming what could have been, and hopefully so much more as Terraria has definitely grown time and again over the years. Still the best $10 I ever spent on a game, all the way back in it's first month on Steam

NOTE TO EVERYONE WHO DISLIKES THIS GAME FROM THE LITTLE INFORMATION WE HAVE: 1. The devs are still updating regular Terraria, and probably still will for a while. 2. This is a spin-off. Why does everybody hate spin-offs, anyway? It's not like they're changing the whole series, and some spin-offs are really good. I mean, Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time greatly deviated from the original formula, mostly due to the jump between optical dimensions. Point is, it was a very different game in the series, as with Majora's Mask. So, weren't they, in a way, spin-offs as well? 3. Nobody had a problem with there not being another Terraria game at all when there _wasn't_ a new game coming, so what would be your problem if the next Terraria game _is_ like Otherworld? 4. Terraria 2 is still something that will happen, and it will probably look and just generally be more like the original Terraria, although it will have some major differences and one or two formula changes to justify it being a whole new game. 5. We don't have _nearly_ enough to judge the entire game on, so if you're going to say you don't like it, explain why. Now is definitely the time to explain why you don't like it, so that it can be changed earlier in development. 6. If you still _are_ going to judge the game on what we have right now, don't judge it on _this_ trailer. The whole game was revamped recently, and some smaller revamps are still happening (and will probably happen again in the future).

For the most part, they seem to be expanding pre-existing things, like wiring and the underground desert, although they added the party event for Terraria's 5th birthday, and might add some more seasonal content, or expand on pre-existing seasonal content.

My son says: First of all, I'm not trying to be a major nerd. but here is an idea, if you were to legally redo or attempt to release this body of a masterpiece, here is some of my concern One: If the tower defense aspect is constant you will need to find a way to make time for resource gathering (if it has that sand box we Terrarian's all know and love). It's weird, yes I like the smooth animation but it's smooth because it's not pixel animated, it's still pixelated but the props [Like Machines and sword] are one big asset instead of each pjxel being animated all the pixel are moving at the same pace and it's not pixel like animation it's only pixel textures

Secondary Protip: As a sprite animator I would just like to point out to everyone who does not like the character animations, first of all they are probably unfinished/at least need a bit of polish, second of all it will take a bit extra time to complete said polish due to the fact that animating smooth nice looking character models is a bit difficult both in terms of the time it takes to do and also the amount of system memory you have to work with. Speaking of system memory that is another thing, in games where the character can have a variety of different clothing and items and such they do need overlayed and animated separate from each other in that sorta "cheap flash" way people are claiming it to be. Original Terraria had this pretty easy because...its animations were not very impressive admittedly...All the items just overlayed in front or behind of the character and it could get away with it...a game like this however has far too many details to as easily do that and thus it requires it a bit more heavily with a higher touch of quality. Here is an example why games like this need this style of animation to function: Mario games have generally less than 10 powerups, simply for example lets say all his combined sprites total to 100 sprites. 100 sprites 10 times is simply 1000 sprites that are needed. Say you try this each-sprite-is-separate system in a game like Terraria and had 10 item sets which have 5 items each, legs, chest, helmet, bow, sword, needing to animate a separate sprite for each of these to compensate for any combo the player could throw at it would be about 100,000 combos or something crazy like that...throw the 100 frames ontop of that and you have 10,000,000 sprites...Ten Million...MEANWHILE separating and animating things as separate limbs is simply 10 sets of 5 items 100 times with no mix-matching combos needed, a simple 5000 total frames at most! Thus why the "cheap flash" way of moving limbs separately makes it actually possible to animate a game like this
