i'm canadian and the first thing after seeing the replay was that it wasn't a penalty so i wasn't surprised when they waived it off.

Its not boarding - Beck got injured coz he wasnt expecting the hit which is starting to become a real problem
@hucz9 ай бұрын
Agreed. But it is a hit from behind, watch there the shove is placed, right on the number on the back of Beck's jersey. Not boarding. Hit from behind.
@chelsm909 ай бұрын
It’s not so much going into the board it’s before that when he cross checks/boards him in the numbers. But they almost seem to look at it at a different point. Not taking it away that’s funny… if your going into the boards don’t protect yourself I guess so you can get the call
@ferociousfil57479 ай бұрын
Hit in the numbers…the rule book is clear on that, maybe not a major but 2min at the minimum
@gamerszone31049 ай бұрын
(Note) Boarding is the action where a player pushes, trips or body checks an opponent causing them to go dangerously into the boards. He was pushed into the boards in an awkward, but (in my opinion) dangerous position. This should have at least been a minor penalty
@jaytodd15669 ай бұрын
Definitely not a boarding major

Is this really not boarding? His initial contact is on the back of Beck, he literally puts his hand on the numbers. Beck is turning throughout the contact to land on his side but that doesn't change the fact he was driven into the boards from behind.
@JRJunior86249 ай бұрын
No it is not boarding, Doesn't matter, his right shoulder hit the boards, not his head, not his neck, his shoulder, he pushed him on his side and his back, "heavy heavy hit" the commentator says oh what a sin, against the big tough Canadians, boy when the shoe is on the Canadian foot listen to the fn whining
@btbiblow9 ай бұрын
@JRJunior8624 I read the IIHF rule for boarding and hitting from behind out of curiosity, this hit definitely qualifies as boarding. Not that it would have changed the outcome. The sweds outplayed the canadian team. Also, I'm not sure what you have against Canadians, but you seem angry, sorry 😅
@jeromilittle9 ай бұрын
@btbiblow Why don't you quote the rule book then? It says: "A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any Player who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the Boards violently or dangerously." So was the Canadian defenseless? Debatable. He certainly couldn't avoid hitting the boards, but he was able to turn and "defend" himself against the boards by squaring his shoulder. Did the Canadian impact the boards dangerously? Debatable. Every check in hockey could be considered violent or dangerous, so it's up for interpretation. Most hits against the boards involve a player's shoulder hitting the boards first and they are hardly ever called for penalties. I've seen multiple collar bone fractures from hits like these that weren't called penalties. It sounded like the refs said it wasn't dangerous because he went in shoulder-first. So I guess that is where they draw the line.
@JeanJames-ff3wxАй бұрын
not game misconduct i agree but should have bern a 2 tho

@garysmith77889 ай бұрын
Lots of excuses from the commentators. BS call
@jaxon84419 ай бұрын
Even if he tried to spin off he was still on the numbers? It’s still boarding, the same way it’s a trip if a player steps on my own stick and falls. He had his hands on his back and still extended and finished the hit. Was it intentional? Maybe not. But it’s still 100% a boarding.
@joar45099 ай бұрын
Yall Canadians have had too many bad calls go your way with all the Canadian refs on Canadian soil you are so spoiled with the calls you can't recognize a good call when you see one anymore. It's touching how you north Americans suddenly forget all about the responsibility of the player receiving the hit that you otherwise loudly chirp on about, when it isn't in your favor. How is the defense player ever allowed to play the body if you can just turn into the birds and hit the ice and get a call everytime? You got a cheap penalty on a clear dive by the goal a minute later too so enough with it already.

That’s at least boarding all day. He grabs him in the numbers and drives him into the boards. Beck is lucky he didn’t hit his head. I thought the game would get out of hand after giving no penalty. That is not protecting the player. Swedes interfering all game and no calls. Now Sweden was the better team but refs were useless. The call on geekie was less aggressive than this. If this gets a no call than geekie should not have gotten a penalty.

American here- My opinion is 5 minutes on this one. Yes he hits the boards sideways but anytime your jersey crest is touching numbers it is checking from behind. The injury makes it a five.

@@LivinLikeLarrryIf it was a shoulder to the back then I would agree, however he wrapped his arms around him and then pushed him. The impact was not as forceful as a shoulder to the back (not that this is the is the sole condition for boarding, but it matters in this case). If he was literally hit right on the numbers he would have jerked into the boards but instead his skates move there and impact at the boards with the rest of his body. Yes the initial point of contact was from behind but since he was not shoulder checked from behind but rather grabbed, he ended up turning slightly. He still went awkwardly into the boards as you can see but it was not the clear as day boarding call you make it out to be.
@jaxon84419 ай бұрын
@@Overflowinggwas it from behind?
@Overflowingg9 ай бұрын
@@jaxon8441 He initially is grabbed from behind but because of the nature of the hit that I described shoved, I would not call this a “hit from behind.” Just because contact began from behind a player does not necessarily indicate boarding. For example, you can grab someone from behind and then push them into the boards to pin them and this would be legal. I believe this is akin to what happened here, although was modestly forceful (still not as forceful as an actual shoulder check, and he went harder into the boards since he was already heading there). This is in the same way the making contact with a players head is not the sole condition for a “head shot” penalty. You could make a hit that began with contact at the shoulders and with minor contact to the chin and it wouldn’t necessarily be considered a head shot. You have to consider principle point of contact and intent. Similarly, a boarding penalty is not a black and white “was he hit from behind,” you have to account for the angle, point of contact, force, and distance from the boards.
@Generalee49 ай бұрын
Why even have refs if you can now overturn a penalty call. Whether you believe it is or is not a penalty, it should never be allowed to be over turned. I would rather have refs make more penalty calls than not enough. That’s how players get hurt.

@klippe199 ай бұрын
The game is being played in Sweden. One of the refs is Swedish. What did you expect to happen ?? They spent a very long time reviewing the play because the Swedish ref was searching for every possible reason to justify not calling a penalty against Team Sweden. If the roles had been reversed you know damn well a Canadian player would have been assessed at the very least a 2 minute boarding penalty; but it more likely would have been called a 5 minute infraction 10 times out of 10. They simply didn't want to give Canada a chance to score on a power-play. Plain & simple. So bloody obvious. Europeans hate Canada being so successful. Team Canada will never be given the benefit of the doubt in any rink outside Canada.

@klippe199 ай бұрын
@@jarmoek1 I didn't forget anything. I'm well aware the other ref is Canadian. But the video clearly shows who was in charge of making the call. Tobias Björk and Mark Pearce were the officials. The video clearly shows Bjork was bound and determined to make sure no penalty was awarded. That becomes very obvious just watching his facial expressions. I stand by comment.
