The NFL is known for making changes. Some, like the forward pass made sense. But others, like the catch rule, made things worse. Today we're going to look at rules and ideas both the NFL proposed and that were actually implemented.

Iirc, it wasn't just Elway that proposed the 4th and 15 rule if you score. That idea was originally proposed by Greg Schiano because of one of his players at Florida State having an injury that completely destroyed his career on a regular kickoff. The idea is basically that on 4th and 15, most teams elect to punt anyway, and punt returns are much safer than kick returns, but going for it is just as successful, if not more successful, than an onside kick.

The 4th and 15th proposal was also about the safety of kickoff returns vs punt returns. A college coach had one of his players paralyzed from a kickoff and proposed that team should get the ball on the 35 on 4th and 15. Most of the time they’d punt, which is still special teams obviously, but they also could go for it. Honestly onside kicks are boring cuz it’s all about the chance of which way the ball bounces
@TimurTripp2
@TimurTripp2 4 жыл бұрын
The Alliance of American Football did away with kickoffs completely. After a score, the other team would simply get the ball at the 25, or the scoring team could opt for the "onside conversion" (4th and 12 from their own 28) in certain situations. I watched plenty of AAF games and never missed the kickoffs. It was safer for the players, and the fans could enjoy the game going almost immediately to the next possession without having to wait for the kickoff, only to have it result in a touchback most of the time.
@pronkb000
@pronkb000 3 жыл бұрын
@@TimurTripp2 The XFL kickoffs looked a little goofy but I liked them (only the kicker was at the spot of the kick--the coverage team lined up on like the opponent's 35 with the return team like 10 yards away, thus preventing huge running starts and collisions). I didn't miss the kickoffs in the AAF either but they're so synonymous with football and such a part of our lexicon that I *would* kinda be sad to see them go away entirely. I forget how the XFL handled onside kicks, probably something similar to AAF.

Replacing the kickoff entirely with the 4th and 15, the "Schiano Rule", is not a bad idea. You still get a legitimate football play, some might argue one more entertaining than a kickoff or onside kick, but it is less dangerous for players. I'd be very interested in seeing it play tested in a few preseason games at least. It isn't what we're used to, but it could be fun with that edge of the fake punt thrown in there.

Overtime should still be reserved for playoff games for elimination purposes. The idea of the season gives all of the teams the same amount of game time to play all of their opponents, i.e. every team gets 60 minutes to determine the result of the game. No one should get a special privilege to extra time to beat their opponent just because the score is the same. Both teams should get the ball in overtime. You mention that a coin flip is a perfectly fair 50/50 chance, however football is not a game of chance; it's a game of skill. One team shouldn't randomly be awarded a win just because they get the ball first. The argument of "learn to play defense" doesn't even work here. Both teams deserve a chance to drive down the field and score. All penalties *absolutely should be reviewable*. The Patriots are correct here. The fact that it might take more time to review them is irrelevant; the point is that referees are human and make mistakes... frequently. There should be opportunities to find and correct those mistakes on the spot. Penalties can *literally change the outcome of games*. Saints fans will tell you this firsthand. Lol, Elway just reproposed the Greg Schiano proposal, and it's actually genius the way he designed it. Chart Party anyone?

I'm 44, and I went from being a "Die Hard" NFL fan to a "I barely care anymore" fan. So many things have ruined this once great game. In no particular order: 1) Not knowing what a catch is 2) Rule changes to make it so easy to score and impossible to play defense 3)Off the field drama being covered more than the actual games 4)Roger G having no idea how to administer fines and punishments fairly or consistently 5) Caring more about if a player smokes weed (legal in many states now) or if they are a POS scumbag that beats women and children 6) Thursday night games every week 7) Players, and owners only care about their own ego's and brands, and have watered down anything that used to feel like a "Team" sport. They don't care about your team, why should you? I'm sure there are a lot more reasons, and I'm finding it very hard to care about the NFL anymore, which is sad, I truly used to love this League.

The Chargers and Rams deserve to be in LA because the owners wanted that idea and because both STL and SD failed to help those teams get new stadium. SD voters voted down the DT stadium in a heartbeat because it'll be publicly funded. They will surely voted down the Misson Valley proposal too because it required public funding, but it ended up being a new stadium for SDSU Aztecs which is paid by the school. The city of SD screwed over the Chargers, plus voters don't want their tax money spent towards a Chargers new stadium.

Games would be interminable. And do you review every *play* to see if a penalty occurred if one wasn't called? Or we do only review penalties that are called on the field? If it's the latter, you're going to see more flags because officials are going to use the same logic they use on possible fumbles, which is "If we call it, we can fix it in replay." Put a sky judge in the booth who has the ability to call for flags to be thrown or rule enforcements to be made from watching on a monitor.

I use "Oppenheimer" in a sarcastic sense to this day because of that bit. Just a bit more pretentious than the usual go-tos of Einstein or Sherlock. Not to mention Jimmy Fallon's Miller on SNL: "By any measure, wide receiver Randy Moss scores more often than Leo DiCaprio at an NSYNC concert at the Mall of America during a lunar eclipse. I agree with Andy Reid on this one. In the NBA both teams have possessions in OT. In MLB both teams get equal possessions until one team scores more on their possession than the other. In MLS and NHL the action is ongoing and the odds of scoring in overtime without both teams having a crack at it is extremely low. So why not give both NFL teams at least one equal shot before going to sudden death, especially in an era where offenses are more high scoring and the rules favor pass catchers? If you have an overtime with two teams whose strengths are on offense, you're basically penalizing the team that loses the OT coin toss.

Maybe it's because I'm a casual fan at best, but I don't think there should be sudden death in playoff overtime. The game should be extended by a full 15 minute quarter, to be played to completion, then if the score is still tied, the game can enter sudden death. I also love the idea of an 18 game season with players limited to 16 starts, so long as it starts earlier rather than ending later. The season is super short compared to other sports, we don't even get to see every team play each other. A longer season will make the sport less random, and it's champion more legit. Limiting players to 16 games will keep the inury risk the same, while shaking up strategy and giving opportunities to under utilized talent

Your proposed rule that “every team should get the ball in OT” is a bad one and 10 out of football fans agree is completely wrong. College OT has each team have a chance at possession; and many people prefer that system to how the NFL works. There is nothing more fair than a coin toss because it’s 50/50? Sure; but that is not the argument. The argument is why does some arbitrary 50/50 non-football related action have that much of an impact on the outcome of a game instead of the merit of how the players play on the field? Granted, a coin toss still has an impact on a college football game (the second team to possess the ball has an advantage of knowing what the first team did); but this is not about what is perfect. It’s about what system is better. The collegiate system of overtime is easily arguable a more fair representation of who performed best in the field of play during it than the NFL system. Even the NFL understood how anti-climatic the NFL OT was when they changed the “sudden death” rule to begin with where a field goal in the first possession used to end the game. They changed it from the first team to possess the ball could not just get in field goal range and kick to win the game without the other team getting a possession. They changes it to incentivize teams to not intentionally stop 30 yards away and press to score a touchdown in order to win with a touchdown. So it stands to reason that if it is “unfair” for one team to win on a field goal without the other team ever having a chance to possess the ball; why would it not be an easy logical conclusion that a touchdown without the other team ever having a chance to possess the ball would be just as equally unfair? By your logic; since the coin toss is 50/50, why not just have the coin toss decide the winner right then and there and not even play the overtime?

Ok, 2 things: First, if we are giving coaches only 2 challenges (and a 3rd if they win both) and taking away a time out for losing, then EVERY penalty or play should be reviewable, especially when the refs are getting them wrong. It doesn’t make sense that only some penalties can be reviewed. Second, “home field advantage” should come with some advantages besides some of the people in the stands cheering for you. Home field advantage should mean there is no coin toss, the home team gets to choose automatically. But I don’t like the sudden death overtime rule and I’m glad they changed it up so a FG doesn’t win it automatically (I don’t like college’s version either). Ok, I lied, number 3. While John Madden is the greatest commentator ever, I loved Dennis Miller as a commentator and it’s a tragedy he was let go.
