The McDonald's coffee thing, i think i can actually shed some light on it. Years ago i dated a i dated a girl with a lawyer dad. That was his case study for the bar exam. There was an internal memo stating that the coffee should be kept well above safe temperatures for human consumption to deter people from getting too many free refills. It takes so long for it to cool down that you can't drink it as fast so you don't get as many refills. That's how the lady won the case in the end, and good for her too. They knew the coffee was dangerously hot and instructed all the restaurants to keep it that way.

That lawsuit also got slandered and twisted by McDonalds through lobbying to make her look bad. Her claim was legit, there's no need to serve coffee that hot, Its not that hot at any other coffee place. You shouldnt get 3rd degree burns from spilling a drink, she just wanted McDonalds to pay her hospital bills because there's no need for coffee that hot.

Also, the fact that they offered her $800 before any lawsuit had been filed would indicate that they also believed they owned some of the blame. That in and of itself was them "admitting" they knew the coffee could be dangerous and opened the door for a lawsuit. I don't know what made them think hotter coffee would make people drink it slower. Many regulars I saw when I worked for McDonald's and even myself would just plop in an ice chunk or 2 and presto chango drinkable coffee. To tell you the truth coffee/tea I would make at home would be just as hot if not hotter. Ice is always my constant friend.

Once my company handed out a first aid/health manual created by our health insurance company. I accidentally flipped to the “prostate cancer” page. Rather than talking about treatment options, it told us that you don’t really need to seek treatment because it’s a slow growing cancer and you’ll probably die from something else before the prostate cancer kills you. My great grandfather had prostate cancer for 40 years, the doctors did nothing for it and at some point it just stopped growing. According to the doctor this is pretty common which is why they essentially "oh no....anyway."

As someone who gets super sick when I eat red meat and red meat byproducts, I appreciate when resturants do not lie to me about whether something is vegetarian or vegan. I also am smart enough to know I should probably avoid certain restaurants because cross-contamination is much easier at certain establishments than others. Huh! I've looked into it again real quick and offer a correction that it was TWO days worth of coffee revenues, at about $1.35M per day. Bonus points for that lady initially offering to settle for the /literal/ cost of her hospital and reconstruction-surgery costs...then McD's told her to stuff it. She offered to settle the whole thing once she realized she would survive, asking $20k to cover $13k in actual and anticipated medical costs, and another $5k for the time her daughter lost from work to take care of her mother for the three weeks that she needed it after the hospital stay...and then I guess they added legal fees or whatever for another $2k? Whatever; McD's counter-offered her $800. That's all. And the temperature of that coffee was BEYOND hot. Scalding-hot is 140F/60C. Her coffee may have been, per a spot-check done later in a surprise inspection (not really a surprise but whatever), about 186F/85.5C. McD's had been warned about the too-hot drink multiple times before at that location, too. To make clear how dangerous this was, an expert at the trial testified that at 190F/88C, coffee would provide 'full-thickness burns' (which will generally require skin grafts to treat) in THREE seconds. 180F/82C coffee would do the trick in 12-15 seconds. 160F/71C coffee would take 20 seconds to burn your skin to its full depth, which as opposed to THREE seconds, is almost a reasonable amount of time to expect to whip your pants off when you've drenched yourself in scalding hot coffee! McDonald's own quality-control manager admitted that drinking their coffee would cause dangerous burns, but that the rate and settlement-cost of reported burns from coffee had not been LARGE ENOUGH to cause the company to reconsider its policy of 'lava-hot coffee'. Oh...I finally have an answer as to WHY they kept making it so hot, and it's more obvious than I wish, and stupider than I'd feared...people drink blazingly-hot coffee more slowly, so they saved money on the refills by making it stupid-hot...though they INITIALLY claimed it was so commuters could get to work with still-drinkably-hot coffee. Turns out, there was some research they did for themselves that said that their wildly-hot coffee cut down on refills and saved them money, and THAT was why they actually had the coffee 'held' at 180F+. www.poolelg.com/blog/the-truth-behind-the-mcdonald-s-hot-coffee-case-.cfm and Wikipedia too. And wow, while I look up info, that poor lady spent EIGHT days in the hospital getting skin grafts and other treatment for the burns. While there, she lost about 20lbs/9.1kg, dropping her to a mere *83* pounds/38kg. A grown-ass lady weighing only twenty pounds more than my big bag of dog food! They should have taken her offer for $20k and sent her a get-well-soon card too and just been grateful, but they declined it. Once she got 'Real' on starting to sue McD's she offered to settle for $90k and they refused that too. They later went to pre-trial mediation...the mediator suggested that McD's settle for $225k, and Mrs. Liebeck offered to settle for $300k. McD refused again, forcing it to go to trial. This conversation is one of the best ways to get me up someone's nose instantly, if they mention it in the "Greedy old lady wanted to sue for money" false-perspective. Now I have even MORE of the facts of this case..! And...yeeep, it only gets stupider and more cruel every time I find out something new!

@@EShirako I wholeheartedly agree that the costs possibly should have been covered but as a gesture of goodwill rather than admission of guilt. The issue with that is that the USA seems to see that as a complete acceptance of liability on the company's part as well as opening them up to further claims which just isn't economically viable. The *recommended* temperature to serve coffee (according the US National Coffee Association) is between 180 - and 185 F (or 82 - 85 C) and, to be fair, that's exactly what I'd expect over here if I just order it unadulterated. They were apparently within that range so realistically they were not actually at fault. That's the bit that usually gets ignored and sheds a slightly different light on things making it not quite so cut and dried as it appears to either camp. It's a grey area. Maybe McDs should have offered assistance but at the same time sticking something bloody hot between your legs while in a moving vehicle could be considered legitimately to be a case of "user error" and not the fault of the company that you were using their product in an incorrect manner. What's next? A warning on the apple pies (which legitimately ARE dangerously hot, slightly cooler than the surface of the sun I believe) that they aren't intended for anal insertion? I'm certainly not for the big corporations, I loathe their constant chase for a bigger bottom line regardless of what it means for the consumer. I just loathe the culture of rewarding stupidity even more.

They probably are disgusting, but when my daughter was about three and I was broke, the indoor playground at our local McD’s was a life-saver during hot Texas summers. She’d have a Happy Meal and I’d nurse a small drink for a couple of air conditioned hours during the afternoon. My son got hand foot and mouth from the play land. I wouldn’t let him back in one for years. Then one year we stopped at McDonald’s and he begged us to go in. My husband talked me into it and I went in the tunnels with him. Halfway into it I see a smashed turd. I got my kid out right away. It was lunch time and the place was busy and lots of kids were in it. I told the other parents and they got their kids out. I told the staff and they said they don’t have time to clean it and told the elderly employee who was watching the play land to clean it. She could barely walk let alone crawl in a tunnel. I said they should close it until someone else could clean it. They did but I still couldn’t believe they were going to send the old lady in. She had to be 80 years old. My kid got hand foot and mouth again even though I washed him in the bathroom. We never took our kids to another ball pit or tunnel like play land. Those things are nasty.

One year they had the school booster dinner night at Chuck E. Cheese and we didn’t go because absolutely screw that lol no thanks. The next day almost half of the kids at the school didn’t show up to school. Turned out that about they all got food poisoning from the restaurant 😂 It made the news, the CDC was called in. It ended up coming from the ice machine which apparently looked like it hadn’t been properly cleaned in years. Gross!

Yup. I worked at one for years, and (you may not be, but other people might) be surprised at how often we'd have people call in or stop by to ask when we had certain toys from which sets and we'd set them aside if they did. Sometimes people would call around and drive from a couple hours away to get ones they were missing. We used to set some of them aside for our regulars to come in and buy entire sets of toys at a time. Some dude dropped a Benjamin on ten sets of one of the Pokemon ones for all his nieces and nephews. Sometimes we'd have bags locked up in the office for a dozen people.

When i worked at a McDonald's with a playplace we actually crawled through it every week with buckets of bleach water and scubbed the hell out of it and then sprayed lysol over the ball pit stir and repeat til coated as much as possible. We had kids drop loads in the tunnels at the one I worked at. It basically just got picked up with little cleaning. One time I grabbed a "clean" towel from our "clean" towel bucket to wipe down our food prep table. While doing so we all started smelling shit. After checking shoes we couldn't find the source until I unfolded the towel in my hand and a little log dropped out. My guess was someone lazy picked up a turd with the towel in the playplace then just tossed it in the washer and somehow it got tangled up in the towel during the wash cycle. It was during a dinner rush, too, so we didn't really stop and disinfect the table. We just got another towel. I said to a coworker "well at least it went through the wash, so it kinda got disinfected." He replied "man, however you look at it, you still touched shit."

As my son was running to the ball pit a couple of kids who were leaving told us that a baby had diarrhea that poured out of his diaper and the balls were all, well, ruined. I remember the time that McDonalds gave employees financial advice to "help" them budget. Their ideas on what things actually cost was laughable at best, and they left out a lot of things that people also have to pay for, but they also added a second job in the list of income. Casually admitting that even their fictional employee living in a fantasy land with no healthcare costs and an almost free home to live in, would need to jobs to pay for that. Edit, I actually looked it up, (you can find it if you google McDonalds employee budget or something similar) they budgeted 20$ for health insurance. I don't know where they think that's an option, but okay. Lots of people pay more than 10x that, at least. But whatever, let's assume Ronald's Fictional Fantasy Dreamland's health insurance is that absurdly low. That still doesn't include any actual costs that you have to pay for yourself that don't fall under any kind of insurance. I guess just don't get injured or sick ever, because your budget does not allow for that. There also was no money in the budget for gas, clothes, childcare, toiletries, or food. I guess McDonalds workers have ascended to a purely spiritual plane where they no longer have a body, so they no longer need any kind of cleaning, covering, or fuel. So, in conclusion, if you are a McDonalds worker you cannot be a human being with a physical body.

As part of my analytics class in college we as a class went through the coffee incident lawsuit. There is way more to the incident than is commonly talked about. Like why they serve coffee at such high temperatures, and why the burns got so bad (it's not just the temperature)

I was a cleaner in a restaurant with a kid's soft play area (not a McDonalds). The balls in ball pits are actually easy to clean. Hardest part is gathering them up into bin bags. But then you just empty them into a washing machine and dryer. Decant back into clean bin bags and then refill the ball pit. At the place I worked, we had two sets of balls so we had a quick turn around. Empty the pit, clean the surfaces, put the second set of balls in and then you can take your time washing the first set. The playset was wiped down every night (highlight of the backshift, cause I got to crawl around the softplay), and the ball pit was emptied once a month, or any time a kid wet themself.

I worked at a minigolf place for a while. We didn't have to sanitize the golf balls, but we did clean them in a manner fairly similar to this. We had an old open-top washing machine on wheels, and we'd dump the balls in along with a hefty squirt of degreaser and let it run. Then rinse with the garden hose.

I work for a flavor development company, and you're correct in assuming that you can make meat flavors (and basically any other flavor) without any of the chemicals coming from the named source. Exceptions being if the flavor is named as specifically "with other natural flavors/WONF". However, it appears that McDonalds was just still adding /some/ tallow to the oil or something like that.

At least in my area of the USA, they took away play place areas inside McDonald’s just prior to Covid, and haven’t brought them back, but still leave the sign advertising on the building, which is just a nightmare for me as my kids flip out, pointing out that if they don’t have it anymore, why do they still have the signs still up?

I remember finding all kinds of nastiness in the "play place" at our local McDonald's when I was a kid. We found syringes (thankfully, with no needles), crusty socks, used band-aids. All kinds of disgusting stuff. I also distinctly recall climbing up to go down the slide and realizing that I couldn't slide because somebody's kid had pooped and it was smeared literally from the top of the slide to the bottom. we cleaned the play place at my local McDs once a month with bleach. pressure washed the whole thing (thankfully no ball pit at ours). we eventually got rid of after the store remodel. All the employees were overjoyed to get rid of it since we had to clean up after accidents way too much. Plus the parents would let the kids do anything they wanted which resulted in damage to the structure.

The problem with not being able to afford to go ‘on holiday’ isn’t that the holiday costs more than everyday life, it’s that in the US, at least, companies aren’t required, and often do NOT, offer their part-time (32 hrs/week or less) employees any paid time off. Big corporations often deliberately don’t hire full-time workers for that very reason. And they don’t pay a living wage, so people can’t afford to take time off because they’re already struggling to pay their bills just to stay out of debt.

To Dave. Sorry to hear about your mishap. Hopefully this will make you laugh. My husband was at the bar and imbibing far too much. So he called home and had his wife (ex) callin to work for him. So in the morning he asked what she told work. She told his job that he had cut off three fingers with a table saw.😂 that was to difficult for him to fake. So when he went to work the day after he received an abuse of sick leave letter. The worst thing was everyone at work had been pitching money and their leave into his account at work to help with medical costs. Bahahahaha.

I had watched the recent epic blaze before this one and had heard Simon's usual complaints about the script being too long. So for this one, I decided I would record the time that he would comment and compare it to the overall time of the video. I want to note that I do not think there should be a change to the format at all as I enjoy these immensely. Just was curious about how much is responsible to the script and edited cut scenes versus Simon's commentary. This particular episode his comments were responsible for 43% of the run time. The paper straw thing annoys me too. I've seen footage of the trash island in the ocean and guess what _isn't_ in it? PLASTIC STRAWS. The entire thing is made up of fishing nets, fishing wire, plastic tubs and tarpaulins lost overboard from fishing vessels. Even the cans found at the bottom of the ocean have come from cargo ships and fishing vessels. That's who's actually destroying the ocean - the fishing industry and fishermen.

So, I can answer the "how do you figure out the damages" issue, as I am an attorney and that often deals with it. It's a bit cyclical, because often what you do is look at what other juries have awarded in similar cases and use that as a basis. You can also try to use the economic damages as a grounding point (i.e. 2x annual salary or something)

I mean, up to a point, yes. It's okay to get exposed to a few pretty harmless bacteria etc, so you can build up a healthy immune system. But you get to a place where people get very ill very quickly, especially very young children. And viral infections don't strengthen the immune system. While you are ill your immune system is weakened as it is, from being very busy fighting one disease, so if you then get another disease or infection you don't get a stronger immune system. You get an already weakened immune system that is now also overstretched. And some viruses weaken the immune system for a much longer time, or even permanently. Your immune system also won't get stronger if you're dead from a serious illness, so. You know. Edit, this is also assuming the person that gets ill is healthy. Anyone who is not in perfect health is already in more danger, and any illness can leave you in that state. And young babies (say, siblings of the child playing in the infectious ballpit) are both more vulnerable to such diseases, and less likely to recover from them.

Worst idea I have seen McDonalds try to pull was the McPizza....The problem was expecting folks to wait 20mins for a pizza that at the time wasn't much better than old school Dominoes, which was horrible prior to their reboot. Also as someone who does work there, they don't offer vaction time for part time employees or anyone who works under 40 hours a week....on top of that franchised locations are able to set their own sick leave and vactation 'standards' as long as its within state average. TBH still like working here over wal-mart because I can actually talk back to customers who are being a McHemroid to me, and my managers won't put up with it or the site owner and so far have backed up myself and the other staff members.

At some point in the late 80s, when I was no older than 6, my godmother had me and my brothers stay overnight. She decided to feed us at a branch of McDonald's in Coventry where I chose those meat paste chicken mcnuggets. I first vomited on the rear left car wheel in the McDonald's car park and the following 12 hours saw me projectile vomiting through all her bed linen, son's pyjamas and her t-shirts, with my greatest achievement being to hit the curtains which were at least 3m away. At 5am she finally called my parents who came and took us home. By this point I had fully evacuated all stomach contents and felt much better. I have not been able to even walk past the open door of a McDonald's since without my stomach turning a little. I also never saw my godmother again, except once - accidentally - 30 years or so later, at a quality restaurant in Stratford-upon-Avon. I did not choose the chicken.

That's the messed up thing with McDonalds. Their ingredients are so overly processed and stuffed with preservatives and supplements, they can probably last a decade left on a shelve. The most paid time off I came across was for a $117k job; the boasted a generous 11 days of PTO plus 6 paid holidays annually. Front line workers (cashier's, fry cooks, etc.) do *NOT* get PTO.

Well... 10 holidays, give or take a few days. Plus 2 weeks vacation. Plus 5 days sick pay. This is average for salary workers.

I don’t think people appreciate how Simon embodies his audience in his imagination, he’s in a room by himself with a mic and a monitor, essentially talking to himself, and yet he manages to make it seem like a real conversation. Maybe it’s the narcissism? lol
