Joshua's confidence seems very low, but I don't hold with the idea that feeding him cream puffs will instantly rebuild it. Soft touches would either give him a false sense of security or, if he recognises he's not being given half-decent challenges, diminish his confidence further. He needs to accept the mistakes and failures of the past, learn from them, recognise the positive elements (e.g. going 24 rounds with Usyk isn't something to be ashamed of), and build on current realities.
@mrt445 Жыл бұрын
The cream puffs show us exactly how good he is right now and his most recent fight shows us that he's not ready for Wilder, Fury even Joyce. AJ's team need to tell him that he has to risk getting Ko'd to beat anyone in the top 10.

AJ needs to gain his confidence back but people set a very high bar expect fire works without any idea how a boxer feels deep inside. Joshua has seen psychologists and even a combat veteran to improve his mindset. If anything it has made him begin to overthink things and be in his head too much. Gerald Washington is exactly what Joshua doesn't need right now. Franklin was the perfect fight for AJ he's letting him know where he's at in his development under this new trainer, and so far, so good. The last thing he needs is a knock over job who'll lull him into a false sense of security. Franklin is being underrated. This reminds me of Fury's fight with Otto Wallin. Good opposition thats criminally underrated.

This is a sound review and spot on. I genuinely want to see AJ go on to be amongst the legends in the sport, as I am a fan of his, but can also see where he is mentally not where he needs to be as a fighter. Proper match making moving forward will determine if he stays in the sport and realises what we all know he is capable of. Derrick James seems like a great fit for him. He did go in with Franklin with his training wheels on which we could all see, and hopefully Eddie and the team take this on board when they select the next 3 opponents. If we see an Usyk rematch or Fury, as one of the next few fights we know they don't give a damn about him. Time will tell.

Joshua is clearly a very talented boxer. When he "plays it safe" he usually comfortably wins whoever he is fighting with the exception of Usyk who is exceptional and probably the best boxer of his generation. No shame in losing to Usyk. No shame in losing to Andy Ruiz who is a brawler. Big props to AJ for outsmarting him in the rematch. Instead of trying to bring him down, let's show him some respect for being one of the best boxers these isles have produced and enjoy his work whilst he is still around. One thing that goes hand in hand in terms of rebuilding confidence is activity. If AJ is sat for the best part of the year awaiting a fight, he's going to be left in a perpetual state of contemplation with his racing thoughts. I think this will make him doubt himself further. If he's fighting knock overs then he should easily be squeezing in 3-4 fights this year. 3 minimum for me. Activity is practical, in ring experience. That's going to be the root of confidence, more so than the choice trainer in my opinion.

Wilder had the perfect comeback opponent in Helenius. Helenius is a tall puncher with questionable defense. He can move, but tends to fade after a few rounds. Fury gets celebrated when he makes a points win. 1 in 3 fights are points wins with fury. Joshua did not lose one single round in a 12 round fight and Joshua did not unload once on him. He wants that one last shot at the title and would not risk even 0.5% chance on losing that opportunity just to knock Franklin out. If he gets the title shot he will finally have all to gain and nothing to lose for the first time in ten years and of course, he will unload everything he has in that final moment for glory. Next fight if fury takes it will be facing an Anthony Joshua with absolutely nothing to lose and fury will have it all to lose. This adds a really good dynamic to the fight and yes, I beleiev Joshua can beat fury even after that performance in a 50-50 fight for the wbc. Joshua does not fare well with smaller men. His track record for bigger more established heavyweights is impeccable but he doesn’t do well with low ranking, smaller men with no profiles as with all three losses. Smaller men. Little to no hw profile at time of bout.

Y'all are late...I've been saying for years that AJ is terrified of getting hit....I noticed that in the Parker fight.

Yup, people get it wrong when they identify the Ruiz fight as the point at which Joshua became gun-shy and disorganised when hit. It was Wlad's right hand that started the demise...

Agree completely about bad matchmaking... it was clear in the Whyte fight that Franklin was durable with a good chin and quick hands ... everything wrong to make AJ look good... also AJ has never looked his best against shorter fighters where he needs to punch downwards!
