The chapel’s most notable features are the five steeples, one at each corner with a larger one resting atop the belfry tower. Surrounded by an overgrown graveyard and a number of ivy clad trees. Sadly the north section has been badly neglected and is completely overgrown, whilst the other three sides are not perfect, you can still manage to wander around quite comfortably. Most of the visible gravestones date from 18th-20th century and are covered in Lichen. I could not find the original Gaelic name, but Feighcullen would seem to mean Cullen’s Wood! Apparently the chapel was built on the site of an early Christian church which no longer exists. It is rumoured that a rather crude baptismal trough which dates from this older church is now housed in the main church in nearby Allen. There is also a story that tells of a saint whom hailed from Feighcullen. Beoan is listed as one of the Irish saints, being a son of Nessan of Feighcullen. It is believed that he came from the Cathaoir Mor clan of Leinster
Feighcullen was designed by the famous architect John Semple, whom would be better known for his work at The Black Church (St. Marys Chapel of Ease) and Monkstown, both in Dublin. Which makes me wonder, was Semple involved in the design of Ballynafagh? Well Semple worked for the Board of First Fruits, a Church of Ireland group whom were also involved in Ballynafagh. The chapel was erected with a gift of £830 and a loan from the Board of First Fruits of £277, not a small sum of money for its time. On top of that it is said to have also received the sum of £248 from another group known as Ecclesiastical Commissioners. And so what we end up with is a stunning five steeple chapel of Gothic design.
The main door with its arced stonework is accessed from the east and was open when I arrived. But I decided to take a walk around the exterior to get a feel for the place before I went inside. The exterior stone work is in great condition for its age when compared to its peer in Ballynafagh, but on closer inspection you can notice where resent masonry repairs have taken place. Both the North and South sides of the building contain five lovely lancel arch windows and there is a large traceried, three light, window to the east gable end.
Once inside if you look up you can see right up the bell tower. Inside the entrance you can turn either to the left or right, both bring you through similar archways into the main area of the chapel.

There are people in this world who think they have the right to vandalize and destroy things that don't belong to them. Such low lifes. That was and still is a beautiful church but the vandals only see something they can vandalize. Great video sue. Greetings from Connecticut USA 🇺🇸

Old cemeteries generally didn't use concrete vaults to protect the casket. Old wooden caskets eventually collapse and form a hole above them. Most cemeteries have a dirt pile somewhere hidden and fill them back up pretty quick. I'm in the funeral biz and have had to fill a few
@SerenitySueGraveyards
@SerenitySueGraveyards Ай бұрын
@georgeburnett358 you know in Ireland we don't use vaults, coffin goes into the ground, they pile all the dirt back on top once coffin goes in. Recently we buried someone and a few days after the whole grave sank about a foot, all the built up dirt was gone. It was very upsetting to see

In the area where the graves appear to be collapsing, it looks to me like dead trees may have been cut down and the holes are where tree roots have rotted and died out. @@SerenitySueGraveyards Yes it is, I agree with you 💯 Perhaps in time, local people will start caring, and work together to help get the place back into shape. The uneven ground in the graveyard? I am not sure what can be done there. Perhaps, some fill dirt can be brought in to help level out the uneven places, if it can be done carefully and respectfully. Then again, perhaps it is better to just leave well enough alone. You and GV deal with this type of situation more than I do, you probably know how best to handle this type of situation. I was reading something on youtube about thyroid issues and this popped up!?? I grew up in Co. Antrim, N. Ireland and from an early age was fascinated by old churches and graveyards. From the age of 12, my best friend and I used to pack a picnic lunch and cycle to a very old cemetery, where we spent hours reading the headstones. We then went into the adjoining church, sat in the choir atalls and sang our hearts out. I was brought up in the Congregational church, although my grandmother's family had been Church of Ireland. At the age of 14, I joined the choir of St. Matthews, C of I in Belfast and was eventually confirmed. That Sunday, the minister of my previous church asked the congregation to pray for my soul, as I was now just s couple of steps from Catholicism! I have been in S Africa, since 1976, where I joined the Anglican church. I guess I am now only one step away 😂 I loved uour detailed presentstion of the chapel. Hopefully whoever inherits it will restore it to its original glory 🙏

Beautiful church, all I kept thinking was imagine all the men building this church in the 1820’s-1830’s. Some of the tradespeople who worked on the project likely were local tradesmen who eventually became parishioners, they got married in the church, had their children christened here. Families grew and faithfully attended services here. All the marriages and funerals of people now long gone, many likely buried in the earth that is sinking around the church. How many people crossed over the threshold ?? All silent now. 😞❤ I live in St. John’s Newfoundland Canada and the large and very old cemetery where some of my ancestors are buried, including my first original gr gr gr gr grandfather, who settled in this city in the 1820’s. Well, I’m told that back in the 1980’s there was numerous acts of vandalism throughout that cemetery and unfortunately the headstone of this ancestor (his wife also should have been on that marker) I did discover record of 3 of their sons who died not much more than children. The rest of their offspring ( they had a lot of kids) I managed to trace save for one fellow, who was buried there but no stone and a bit of family history to that line 😉 Why people are so mean to desecrate, destroy and leave such carnage in places so peaceful as churches and cemeteries.

Why? Decay itself is no beautiful and clean processs. Its more beautiful when nature is taking back over. The dead don’t care … its only the living that need such places and if no relatives are left nobody cares … many of those places have been bulldozed.

Gorgeous Church ! It has weathered well through the years on the outside . The inside isn't too terrible. It could be refurbished. Why are all these abandoned churches so far back from the road ? It seems that you walk quite a distance to get to them. Thank you for sharing your adventures!

Surprised to see the bell still hanging. First notice , it looked very grand and beautiful. The windows alone made the outside exquisite! I’ve never seen the land do that, unless there are sink holes becoming noticed. We have some here in the U.S., that have collapsed roads and highways here. Still not sure. Tc and stay safe always. 😊

Such a beautiful church. Just beautiful. I'm 68 and when I was a child in Oklahoma, we restored an abandoned and neglected grave yard dating back to the 1800's. 70% of the graves were sunken to the point to the bodies. We began identifying all the know stone/markers (many were smooth as most were made by hand in sandstone. Once we identified all known, using state of Oklahoma funding, county funding and donations., my father (heading the crews of inmates from the prison began work that lasted over a year. From resetting the stones, mowing, filling in and compacting, the cemetery was restored to a point of taking more burials of families. This was in the late 60's. A trust was set up and donation from a couple of families started the ball rolling and has continued with other small/larger donations. The interest is used to take care and tend the graveyard and graves. It is lock boxed so it can never be touched. Later, as technology improved, ground sensing radar was used to try and identify all grounds and completed the areas of the old part where we knew other bodies were located. With the trust set up, and the interest only to be used to keep the graveyard in a beautiful condition, donations continue to be made. This beautiful church and graveyard should be saved. Not just for the dead but because it's the right thing to do.

I hear you! It's disgraceful to see such wonderful places left to rot!! I'm surch the local parishioners put a pretty penny into these churches and it should be given back to the community to use at least as a community hall or meeting house, not just left. Hhello Sue, i just discovered your channel. We live in the USA and I’m amazed at the number of surnames in this church graveyard that are names of people i grew up with. i noticed that your torch is set to the “flickering” mode. If you double cluck the power button on the bottom of the light it will shift to a steady beam. It may help you to better read the headstones.

Often in areas there were little churches and as the community grew, need for a larger place of worship. In a little fishing village about 30 - 40 minutes from me, I was trying to trace an ancestor. There had been 3 churches on that site and the land had been donated to the church. Pretty much everything in this community was built on a hill including the church. The cemetery extends from behind the church and up rocky terrain. There are old headstones visible in the front yard of the church but nobody mows or looks after the grounds. ( no doubt many decades ago people had sheep to take care of the mowing). During last enlargement of the church they found remains and headstones The headstones they keep in the basement. Remains we presume were reinterred. I managed to talk to a couple of women as they came out of the church. They had been cleaning vacuuming etc. But it’s a shame the front cemetery isn’t taken care of, as it extends up the hill into the trees I can understand. When I first moved to the city, before my Arthritis and Bursitis became too unbearable, I did walk up the rocky hillside and took some photos of stones but was alone and walking with a cane and didn’t want to press my luck. Yes that church in that fishing community is still being used.

Here in the state's they make you get a cement vault to put the coffin in before they lower it into the ground. It keeps it from collapsing and the ground level. A hundred years ago they probably didn't care. God bless your heart for getting out in the Bitter cold to make this video. ❤

In many places thats forbidden … the body is supposed to rot and coffins intended to disintegrate. Nowadays many graves are just rented out for 15-30 years and then are removed … hence in many places anything interfering with the natural decay is banned. The vaults were problematic as as soon nobody is there any more no money is paid for maintenance any more.
