We are developing our off-grid homestead from scratch and it's time to get our septic system installed! In this video we would like to share what the septic permitting process looks like as well as the soil percolation test. We were fortunate enough to be able to interview our inspector on camera and wanted to share that information with you all for anyone who is looking for more information on the permitting process.

Nice of the inspector to help out with the documentation of the journey. Good for you two showing the hardships along the way. You both look so happy in your videos living your dreams. Best of luck to you from a fellow PNWer.

I appreciate the informational lesson. very educational. couldn't help but notice the vast resources of rocks, aka building stones, you have available. have you considered utilizing them in a post & beam plus stonemasonary equipment & vehicle garage, with a heated shop area? and a she-shed by her garden?

Yes, I guess that is all relative, it is a clay loam or a loamy clay. Basically I am worried about the amount of clay for the perc hole but it is beautiful soil for growing. I'm excited to delve into your channel when I am back to good internet. Thank you for your hard work.

Have you ever looked into the geology of your area? All those round rocks would suggest water, but you seem to be pretty high up and the earth is so dry so deep. Maybe the glaciers created them?

I'm all for getting the permit and having the inspection but $800 is extremely steep in my opinion. She is not engineering a solution and she is on the payroll whether salary or hourly. So where is the value above the costs actually associated with her 1/2 day of work at your place and some desk work at the office. What other reasonable costs is the state incurring due to the inspection? Love your videos, keep them coming.

Not digging poop holes. You're digging piss and waste water holes. The solid (poop) is held in a tank and is dissolved with enzymes. Your piss, dish water and wash water is leached through lines into the soil. The perc test ensures the soil can properly handle the water that your house is leeching onto it.

A dry summer will dry the ground to 3' or more. I was digging in my backyard, and even wore a dust mask at one point, it was as dry as a desert.

Where we are in Washington, you have to use a licensed Septic Designer to do the perk tests and hole digging and then design the system to match the residence(based on bedrooms not bathrooms) to the land. Per the land, you have to be certain distance from Roads, Wells, Property Liens and any wetlands/water sources. You then go to Public Health and get the Design and Layout approved and a Permit. Then you can build it yourself OR hire a Contractor and Public Health does all the Inspections to confirm it is done per the approved Design Plan.

Great idea from you guys to arrange an interview with the inspector. Probably a stupid question and almost surely checked by both you guys and the inspector: Is your septic system below the level of where you plan to build your house and possible basement and possible cropgarden? As our "business" ;-) tends to flow down hill if the system, god forbid, would ever fail during heavy rainfall.

Excellent concern! We've been employing the help of professionals with this installation and it's been most helpful so we don't miss small things as you mentioned. Happily the system has just the right area, elevation, setbacks and all right where we can get maximum building space from our little flat spot. Bit of luck really.

Awesome! We researched Chile briefly but it seemed to be too far of a stretch at this point in time. That said, I'm sure we are seeing the final days of no building codes. Where are you from originally? How difficult is it to own land in Chile?
@ChileExpatFamily
@ChileExpatFamily 8 жыл бұрын
+Pure Living for Life we are from South Carolina. It is very easy to own property here in Chile. The Chilean government is stronger than the USA on property rights. My wife is from Connecticut and I am an old farm boy from SC.

+ChileExpatFamily Enjoying the videos so far, just discovered the channel. Just a clarification, I'm from Chile, worked in farms all my professional life and come from a family of engineers and architects. We DO need building permits for everything here, that is if you want a certified home from your local municipality (which is the legal way to do things) and the only way your asset is actually gaining value over time and sellable in the future (that is sellable to someone who needs a bank loan to pay you, which is almost everybody).

You kind of prove the gullibility of the average person when you accept and agree with the $800(+) septic inspection permit! $800 is EXCESSIVE for what they actually do, it should be more in the $1-2 hundred range max; for $800 they should bring their own equipment and dig the holes themselves!!!!! Excessive fees like this is what causes most people to skirt around the permitting/inspection process. Secondly, the government uses these codes and permits to control what you can and can't do, whether it is safe or not, it is more about their CONTROL of what you do on your land; they simply feed you the BS line that it is because of environmental issues (considering that government is responsible for the most, the biggest, and the worst environmental issues). Many jurisdictions refuse to allow composting septic systems and separate gray water containment (for use in irrigation) because they don't have any understanding or training in it. Setting up a septic system is NOT rocket science and is actually very simple, it just takes research which most individuals are unwilling to do!

$800.00 permit? Wow why so much? That's outrageous. Why does the government need to make a profit on a dam permit. Last permit I got was 75.00 and in this area we actually have to watch the water perculat and time it. That's how the drain field requirements are determined. Hate to see what your water well permit is going to run.
