Berserkers (Bärsärk) were the ones who ingested hensbane to go into that crazy rage (Bärsäk or to go Bärsärkargång). The ones training and putting on wolfskins to transform was Ulfhednar (Ulf or Ulv is the old word for wolf, but as Christianity took over in the 1000nds same as with the witches you describe who wanted to keep their traditions, the wolf became feared and you could not say it´s name "ulv" and had to use the word "greylegs, goldlegs or varg- that means outlaw or criminal in old swedish) . Just as feared as the Bersek the Ulfhednar kept their intelligence but got the brute force of a wolf in battle. Even us Scandinavians mess that one up so no worries ^^. I find this so fascinating! Thank yo for a wonderful educational video :D.
@TheHiddenPassage8
@TheHiddenPassage8 11 ай бұрын
Thank you for clarifying this. I’m seeing that the word hamrammr refers to practitioners of transformative animal magic, if you will, as a whole, under which there were several subsets of this, ulfhednar being the one dealing with wolf shapeshifting, as you pointed out. Let me know if this is correct, thanks.
@EmberWolfsArt
@EmberWolfsArt 11 ай бұрын
@@TheHiddenPassage8 No worries, even us Scandinavians have a hard time separating Berserkers and Ulfhednar and it is moslty the Bärsäkar who get the most attention. In Sweden we say "Hamnskiftare" hamn as a word today mean harbor but it also mean "form" or rather a form you can change into like a werewolf is a "hamnskiftare". kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6rLhKKsa92Hi5o This guy can explain Hamrammr way better than me and he is an expert . I think it is more related to Norway than Sweden and the stories vary a bit since it is storytelling-tradition and was not really written down until the poetic and Snorres Edda. The Berserker (bear= bear / Björn ) so it basically means Bear-rage. The Ulfhednar was kind of a military force (not as we have it to day but like warriors working for the leader of a village) and they did their rituals and put on wolf skins and went into a state where they took on the spirit of a wolf to fight enemies. Here is a more in dept video about the difference between them and this guy knows his stuff: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJa8p4SXgNqSm5Y . Sorry for rambling, I just find these things so interesting ^^.

Thank you for the info! It is a fascinating topic I would like to explore in depth someday. Also interesting to compare similar beliefs in Native American medicine warriors. Scandinavian magic in general is very interesting and has ties to shamanism. I make some mention of seidr in my upcoming video (out of body travel, shapeshifting, necromancy, etc). I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on that. Cheers
@EmberWolfsArt
@EmberWolfsArt 11 ай бұрын
@@TheHiddenPassage8 No worries ^^. Here is his take on seidr : kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKfHpYCgmrmIhtk . I am not sure of the Swedish side of this. There was fylja or fyljor that was an animal that could sort of tell others about you- like you are arriving to someones home, you are sick etc but it was not like you were the animal or it was a companion- it was sort of a manifestation of your spirit others and you can see. Mostly a bad omen. In the Nordic myths (Valhalla, Oden , Hel and all that) the gods often could borrow a "djurhamn" an animals shape. Loke/Loki takes on an eagle-shape he borrow from Freja /Freya. He is blamed for the giants kidnapping Idun so he has to go save her or the other gods will kill him.

@@TheHiddenPassage8 Yes, unfortunately with the lack of information about Druids, learning more is minimal at best. I'm hoping, with the surge of interest in archaeology, that we'll eventually uncover a source from that time frame, that will give us some actual definitive information. Maybe information which is more 'friendly' towards the Druids and their way of life. I've always been highly interested in them. I'm looking forward to those videos. 🍂🍁

Been to the Hill of Ward on Samhain. We all walked up the hill upon arriving at the top a fire was lit. The flowing year we took the flame and it was sent out to the surrounding hills of Tara, Skeen and onwards. Then had a feast on the site of the Banqueting Hall on the Hill of Tara. Some fabulous photos of this by Ken Williams of Shadow and Stones.

My research indicated that the name Samhain was Irish, but did pass into the Scottish highlands with immigration, and that it may have been pre-Celtic. But there were certainly similar observances in surrounding areas (that went by different names) in Scotland, Wales, and the Isle of Man. Ronald Hutton (main source) says that there’s no evidence that it was throughout all the British Isles. At best, it was a pan-Celtic festival 🤷🏻‍♂️

Osiris is the god of the underworld and is associated with the moon. He never resurrected on earth but in the Great Hall/Duat. He has been mistaken as a solar deity mixing him up with his son Horus who eventually merged with the God Ra later in Egyptian mythology. It is common for those in the west to associate all male deities with the sun as the sun is masculine, and female deities with the moon as the moon is associated with women and our fertility cycle.

lemme say most abrahamic religions are tied up in pagan traditions still.... such as christianity but thats roman catholic... our pagan ancestors acknowledge the God of all Gods... the creator... which you mentioned the demiurge... but truth is we weren't suppose to worship the sun or the stars or the planets/ wandering stars... we was suppose to live an ascetic life so that we can escape this matrix and return to our whole state... The beloved I AM which is everything and who lives in everyone... we're beings of light... we forgot that this world wasn't suppose to be endgame thats why the creators about to remind us....

Good points. I definitely vibe with henotheism. I think if you go back far enough many pagans understood these things but kept them close to the vest (mystery schools). For instance, the idea that the planets were merely physical manifestations of higher powers. Exoteric vs esoteric religions and all that.

truthfully i'm having my belief system shattered all the time... but your bang on... i'm only so passionate about it cause i've seen first hand the results of certain practices and allthough our ancestors were far more advanced than we give them credit for... i believe the way forward is love for all beings much like the vedas and hindu beliefs mention through samadhi and or moksha.... @@TheHiddenPassage8

People don’t live by the seasons anymore. Pagans didn’t live by the Roman calendar. The lived by “the wheel of the year”. They were farmers,and lived by the seasons. They marked and celebrated the year by festivals. We still celebrate pagan festivals with each holiday we celebrate today throughout the year.

Even if you took a very literal reading of the great flood myth (ie. everyone on the whole earth drowned except for Noah and his family), this suggestion doesn't really make sense. It's a Judaic myth taken up by Christianity, so if you were right, then Halloween would have originally been celebrated by the Hebrew (who apparently would have been the only ones to preserve Noah's story) and then by Christians (also its celebrations would probably have had more to do with water than fire). There would have been no need for Christianity to adapt Halloween to its needs by changing it into All Saints' Day, the way it happened in reality, because it would have been Christianity that spread it. Also, as explained in the video, celebrating the dead (all dead, not just the ones from one specific event) is only one aspect of Halloween, the other one is the possibility/threat of interactions with demons or spirits.

There's actually multiple accounts of the flood all over the world. China n south America and sumeritans, wrote about in their tablets stories of it too! However my personal belief is that it was r local. ( I think the water covered the Mediterranean and northern Africa as there's evidence of whale bones there. ).

The issues of celebrating a dress up for young children to go and get candy they're not worshiping the prince of the power of the air. There are more Christians who have done this by going through their life saving money for retirement so the faithfulness that many have been of the mind to looking to their own ability to take care of their needs for what they assume will be coming up as they age. It can be a slippery slope into a place where their bank is that house of the holy for them to think about as being the thing that will take care of them as they get to their golden years. What the Celtic tribes in Ireland held to be the things that could be enmeshed into Roman Catholic theology in order to bring Pagans into Christianity. Christmas, Easter which had nothing to do with Christ became Christian as the statues of Zeus and other gods became "Christian" but scripture is very straightforward about those things being against the Creator. Things he said not to adhere to. Most Protestants will create their own reasons to keep those practices alive. For German Christians if Rome had stricken Christmas from Christian practices they would have left the Roman Catholic world. Something the Roman Catholic Pope couldn't allow to happen.

Actually Pagans don't subscribe to fear based bullshit. Samhain is a time to commune with and honor our Ancestors, as it is a period where the veil between worlds is lifted - to those who can that is. Unfortunately what was a holiday or special time to venerate the grandmother/Crone aspect of the Triple Goddess has become a ridiculous spectacle which is far from what used to happen and still does in the Pagan community of contemporary times. Basically what you are describing (dark forces....terror, etc. is a warped and unenlightened type version.
@TheHiddenPassage8
@TheHiddenPassage8 11 ай бұрын
The Samhain info I presented was based on the available historical evidence on past traditions. So I’m not sure why you’re bringing neopaganism into this like it’s a rebuttal to my work. It’s not relevant and you can’t say with any degree of certainty that whatever pagans are doing today is at all similar to the original traditions, since we know very little about them. What you describe sounds great, and may very well have been an important part of Samhain, and I covered that. But I think calling the dark aspects “fear based bullshit” is unwarranted and ironically a bit disrespectful to the pagan ways you appear to be trying to defend.

Now I really understand the Pagan roots of Halloween.

Very important point - Isis is NOT the "Virgin Goddess" nor has she ever been referred to as one. That is a later edition of those who wish to mush together Christianity and what they believe its true origins are - the TRUTH IS - ANCIENT EGYPT HAD NO CONCEPT OF VIRGINITY - This wipes out all connection between the two religions. Osiris was cut up into pieces by his brother Seth, scattered around Egypt. Isis found all the pieces but the fallis so, she formed one out of gold, turned into a kyte (winged goddess) and literally had sex with the corpse of Osiris. Osisi, never resurrecting on earth, became the god of the underworld. Moon deity NOT solar deity. There is a lot on the web that isn't true. Untruths are repeated over and over because people depend on and accept the lies. The addition of a "Bridal Veil" on Isis is a much later western addition. Brides did not wear veils in Egypt. In all actuality there was NO wedding ceremony at all. A young man would bring his belongings to the home of the girl he wished to spend his life with, and they took up residence. The veil may have come from Celtic or Christianity as it was the Christian monks who wrote Celtic myths down. This is why we have what we do. Most is lost, so we cannot know exactly what is truly Pagan or Celtic and what is an interpretation or reimagining out of a Christian world. In regard to Halloween, most traditions come from later centuries when Celtic or pagan traditions were not practiced. There is a lot more research done on this subject. I am not sure what source you have used? The Egyptian information is not out of research or knowledge of Egyptian mythology. I have studied Ancient Egypt since I was 11 and am half Egyptian.

Yes, Isis is not a virgin goddess as we understand the concept today. My source said that the legends indicated that although she gave birth to all living things, she remained a virgin. This concept of virginity is more or less synonymous with fecundity and spiritual purity, and we do see this expressed in some Egyptian customs. I admit that I could’ve used a different term and been more precise. As far as veils go, I do believe they were used at one time or another, and the statue at Sais is attested to by several Greek authors. Whether or not any of this can be tied back to authentic Egyptian customs, it doesn’t change the fact that this interpretation of Isis is where the symbology of the veil between worlds originated, which is all I was really trying to say. You are correct that many of the “Samhain” traditions are recorded in later centuries when Irish paganism was no longer practiced, and I believe I was pretty clear that much is unknown/ subject to speculation. However that doesn’t mean we can’t make educated guesses and look to those more recent traditions to understand Samhain. I’m half Irish, so…

truthfully i'd rather live in a world full of true believers in God who are good people and show kindness and love and respect to everyone.. rather than people who haven't conquered their own inhibitions and do whatever what the fuck they like and worship this god and that god.... i got respect for the Gods... but most people only worship them to get what they want rather than worshipping them to maintain healthy spiritual connection with the divine... The gods are God's children... and we are all just ants to them... but 1 thing i've learned for real... is that the gods are cruel... the source of all divinity is not...

Even though I’m sympathetic to paganism, I agree with you here to an extent. In a way it is natural to invoke lesser gods for worldly matters, and there is some evidence to suggest that ancient pagans saw their relationship with the gods as a partnership rather than total subservience. But I could definitely see how this could be perverted in modern practice. Some people are too quick to assume that whatever god they pick out of a hat is willing to work with them and give them whatever they want.

Actually, they likely used a calendar that was based on lunar cycles. So, not always October 31st, but on a full moon near that time. It would always have been on the same day on their calendar.

Samhain, like most other Celtic festivals, was tied to the agricultural cycle and the changing of seasons, so even though they did use a lunar calendar, that doesn’t really make sense to me. Where did you get that info?
