Honestly it is less of a process to make mochi than it is to make bread. Bread should actually cost more because it's process is more complicated. Most of the process here was making rice flour, which was then steamed to make the mochi, and then they put it in the mixer to increase its stickiness. That is really all it takes to make the mochi. Now what you do with from there... With bread you need to make use of alot more chemistry and products. You don't even need to make the mochi rise with yeast, so no need to worry the texture after its baked. The closest thing to mochi I can think of that Americans regularly consume is a tortilla or pasta.
@julietamagnetto7357
@julietamagnetto7357 2 жыл бұрын
@@crashzone6600 the difference is the level of handling required too, bread making can be almost fully automated, but the industrial production of mochi isn't that widespread. At an industrial level, bread has a chain supply of ingredients which allow the producer to save lots of time and money. Since these mochi makers have to take care of every step it's not as easy. If they had sweet glutinous rice flour already prepared the process might be quicker, but it must not be as profitable as making it themselves.

Look up simple machines. A concept that should have come up in school. Screws are essentially an axel with a spiral ramp wrapped around the side. The same ramp a stunt person would use to jump something. Simple machines helps explain all of those similarities. That washer drum is like it is to do exactly the same thing to your clothing as it is doing to the rice starch.

By accident. Beer was also discovered by accident when people forgot wheat in a tub and it fermented. Given the millions of rice users in that culture, they stumbled on mochi by playing around with rice and getting creative once a stretchy quality was observed in some variety. Most things are discovered by accident by virtue of just how many people there are doing all kinds of things. Someone finds out and tells everybody else.

There's a explanation to that. We asians usually first clean our rice with water two times before adding our final water to it. We clean our rice because if we don't, then the starch will make our rice gummy, and you don't want that to happen. We add our final water to our rice, because the water will be absorb by the rice as it cooks, giving it a leg up. The rice will have its better and more even texture as it cooks since we don't want to eat it dry. We asians just love our rice.

I was confused when they had the flat mochi and were boxing it because I had never seen mochi sold without some sort of filling before. Simple red bean filled ones are amazing but sometimes my favorite asian market has various other coated flavors like mugwort and black bean that are also delicious. Mochi is so versatile and I am insanely jealous of all the countries that get to enjoy it more often.

It's actually super easy to make. And super cheap. But eating too much of it can be bad for you, like candy. Mix glutinous rice flour with sugar and water. Grease some plastic wrap and place that in a bamboo steamer tray. Fill with the glutinous rice flour. Steam. Then cut and shape into balls and fill/coat with flavors. (I like coating it with peanut sugar.) You have to work fast, as the mochi won't be as easy to work with once it's cooled.
