Terry Kath was the reason I first got into Chicago. I just love his guitar playing. One of my favourite songs of his is from the Chicago VIII album called "Oh, Thank You Great Spirit", which he wrote as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix. I remember when me and my brother were listening to that in the car and my brother said that the song sounded very much like Genesis. Another song that I like from Terry Kath is from the previous album, Chicago VII, called "Song of the Evergreens" which was sung by the group's trumpet player Lee Loughnane. Terry Kath wrote the song and towards the end of the song his guitar playing is absolutely awesome.

Really good to see his rhythm playing recognized. Nice job! His rhythm playing on 25-6-4 (live at Tanglewood) is off-the-charts. I think he was wound up a little tight that day - couldn't wait for the tech to get the drum kit fixed.

Growing up as a kid in the 70's, my older brother introduced me to Chicago and so many other bands. I just got finished watching a dozen songs from a Chicago Live show from '70 I had no intention of watching but youtube suggested an hour ago and I come back to my subs and see this video, the ALGO's know I need to see Terry play first to truly appreciate this video. ;) Search Chicago Tanglewood for a great show for those who don't know about it and see Terry in action.

I've loved Chicago ever since I bought their Chicago III album as a trumpet-playing teen back in 1971. In my opinion, the bad went way too pop after Terry left us, and I really don't listen to many of their stuff after Hot Streets came out. Over the years, I've come to appreciate Kath more than ever. Another skill that he was an absolute master at was his wah-wah work, for example, his solo on Lowdown (Chicago III). And his mind-blowing work on A Song For Richard and His Friends (from the Carnegie Hall live album) is just fricking unbelievable. It's no wonder Jimi appreciated him!

I enjoy someone focusing on this neglected aspect of Kath's wizardry. In addition to everything else, Kath's wrist was like a piston; his strums were off the chart. Funky, varied, sometimes lightning-fast. And his counterpoint scratches so punctuated what he was doing. well it is good to acknowledge that he doesn’t get the credit he deserves, not that it matters but rolling stones has never put him in the top 10-20 guitarist. And many list leave him out when he is easily in the top 10. That is what he means by under appreciated, not talked about enough.
