The story begins with Agnes Nitt leaving Lancre to seek a career at the Opera House in Ankh-Morpork, recently purchased by Seldom Bucket, formerly a cheesemonger. When Granny Weatherwax realizes Nanny Ogg has written an immensely popular "cookbook" but has not been paid by the publisher (and that the nom de plume of 'A Lancre Witch' may lead people to believe that she rather than Nanny wrote it), the witches leave for Ankh-Morpork to collect the money. They also hope to recruit Agnes into their coven, to replace Magrat Garlick who left the coven when she became Queen of Lancre (in Lords and Ladies). This has the side benefit of distracting Granny from becoming obsessive and self-centered, or so Nanny believes to her great relief. En route, they meet Henry Slugg, an Ankh-Morporkian opera singer who adopted a Brindisian persona of Enrico Basilica to further his career but yearns for Ankh-Morporkian cuisine after years of Brindisian pasta, squid and tomato sauce; and Granny makes a deal with Death for him not to claim the fatally-ill son of an innkeeper.

Nigel Planner appears to be the only one that has the correct voices of the witches, especially Granny Weatherwax!

Lawks is an expression used by the "lower classes"as a supplication
@victoriadiesattheend.8478
@victoriadiesattheend.8478 2 ай бұрын
okay I will help you out bc no one else will. "Lawks" is a sort of....medieval exclamation that supposedly the lower classes would use, according to the literature of that time period, usually attributed to women. In our real world. Because the Discworld seems to operate permanently at a time period similar to our medieval time, Terry took this word and put it in there. When Granny Weatherwax or Nanny Ogg are attempting to look or act like "regular people" and not witches, they use this exclamation to appear like "normal women."

@@victoriadiesattheend.8478 thank you! I thought it might have something to do with Laks or lachs (salmon) hahaha because Granny says something about laks eggs in witches abroad XD

@@fabiansw8no problem 😊 Maskerade, Witches Abroad, Wyrd Sisters, Carpe Jugulum and Lords & Ladies are all Discworld books in which you will find Granny, Nanny and either Magrat or Agnes. I am certain there are others but these are the ones they feature the most largely in, and are my favorites. I also recommend Hogfather, The Truth, Feet of Clay and anything featuring Vimes & the City Watch.

@@nobody8328 You sound like my dad! He's been fooling my nephew into believing that there's a bird called the lesser spotted Oomigooli bird - it flies backwards when panicked and has a VERY peculiar mating dance🤣😂! Sometimes I REALLY worry about my dad's brain (whatever planet it's on).

@tricia5792 ha! I even know the ancient secrets for hunting that particular species. They're wiley little boogers and pretty hard to find. Those lesser spots are much better camouflage than the greaters, you know. If you see your dad and your nephew headed into the woods one night with a stick and a large bag, you're in for an adventure! Keep an ear out for that mating call 🤣

Real shame Nigel Planner did not do "Wyrd Sisters", Celia Imrie does a lousy job on the voices, especially Nanny Ogg and makes it all sound like a kids bedtime story about cuddly little animals.
