From what I can work out Tel, looking at it under the scope, and satelite view of their industrial site, SS is humic acid extracted from compost (chemical extraction, which is why it's so expensive). Now then, you can buy powdered humate that is mined from fosilized remains, which is natural, and contains more minerals, for ~£25 a Kg.

@glassbackdiy3949 thank you Pete.
@lesleysmith6232Күн бұрын
Are you sure about that, Pete. I thought Humic acid didn't contain any micro organisims. Using SS as per Terrys method in the newly mixed compost seems to considerably increase the temperature, indicating the prescence of bacteria.
@glassbackdiy3949Күн бұрын
@@lesleysmith6232 SS doesn't contain any life under the microscope, it looks exactly the same as Humic Acid powder. SS is humic IMO, so it will have a very similar effect on soil/compost. Humic is a biostimulant, it will stimulate microbial activity, making whatever nutrients are in the soil/compost bioavailable (more easily absorbed by plants than the chemical/mineral ionic pathway) with a corresponding increase in microbial activity (which is why you get more heat, microbial reproduction=heat). If you'd like to know more about Humic/fulvic substances Diego Footer has a very interesting long form interview with a Humic expert on his channel.

Nice one Terry. Like someone commented on my SS trials: Could be the seeds spud in the SS compost were always going to produce more. Can't argue with that, and I can't grow 100s of lots to prove either way!

Got to love a bit of 'bog brush action'! Joking aside, every time I see a 'Supersoil' experiment the yield is often higher, but the variation in size of the potatoes is always more with the additive - which suggests that the plant is not entirely 'happy'... but for sure if you want a larger crop.... Nice 'chokes' by the way...

Great looking spuds there Terry shame about the carrots and the root fly... why do you think they got attacked? As your beds are high and is sweet candle not carrot root fly resistant?
@terrykingsallotmentgardening5 күн бұрын
@Lauralearningtogrow I was trying to be clever and grow them in the same place every year and they have got worse so maybe once they get contaminated the grub/fly stays in the soil and emerges and doesn't have to fly far to lay their eggs. Video update on what I will do in the future.

I have containers over 4ft up off the ground yet the carrot fly still got into them and it was fresh soil that was dug around 12 inches from the surface so I think can clearly fly higher than the claim3d 18 inches.
