You go to the Tesla Shop Online under charging - NEMA 2 adapters - and select the adapter that matches your dryer outlet. The standard adapter is in your mobile charger. You give it a hard pull to disconnect and push your new adapter in.

Good to note that the mobile connector that comes with the car is maxed at 32 amps. So a 40 amp breaker is fine if you are only using the mobile connector with your Tesla. Also, Model 3 Standard Range Plus can only take a max of 32 amps as well! Great video!

Matching the breaker to the max design pull of the plug type is a good safety rule, and is probably required by code. I’d still put in the 50A breaker in case an RV or something comes along (perhaps many years from now) with that kind of draw.

Just another point --- there is a federal tax credit of 30% which covers the charger and installation so really the extra cost of installing the wall charger is about $350. As a spare mobile cable would set you back $280 (not that really needed) . Thanks for your video.

My reason for getting the wall connector is so that I can charge my car outside of the garage since it is weatherproof. Previously I had my NEMA 14-50 inside and I would run the mobile connector with the garage door open. Now I can plug in anytime with car parked outside and the garage door closed.

Everyone wants to get by with the 14-50 receptacle. If done safely and by code, there is little savings. Plug-in installs need a more expensive commercial grade outlet, the extra neutral wire and in most areas a gfci breaker. My extra cost to a customer that demands a plug-in will almost cover a wall unit. The install is cheaper, safer and allows for a higher output. Always go for a hardwired install.

I ordered a Tesla 3 RWD vehicle on April 21, 2022. It will arrive in September. Thank you for the explanation of home charging. It was very helpful. I don't drive long distances on a daily basis, so I will use the 120V connector that comes with my car for the first few months. If I need to have a 240V outlet installed in my garage, I will do so after Christmas. Also, there is a Supercharger 1.5 miles from my home if I take a long trip. BTW, LOVE your Swisstrax flooring. I'm looking into this flooring as I am remodeling and insulating my garage before my Tesla arrives. I live in the Chicago area.

Nema 14-50 has 4 pings, Line1, Neutral, Line 2 and ground. The charger does not use the neutral. So tell the electrician to install a Nema 6-50 which has Line 1, Line 2 and ground. With one less conductor, the cable cost will be less, especially if it's a long run from your breaker panel to the plug.

In the UK you can't get more than 13 amps at 240 volts out of a standard plug. Even three phase is limited to 32 amps 400 volts with the wall charger, yet in the US you can get 40amps at 240 volts with the mobile charger? This is crazy, way way better than the megre 3 miles an hour with the mobile charger in the UK. If you could get 33mph with a mobile charger in the uk not many would bother with the wall charger I think.

Keep in mind also with the 14-50 plug; the 6-50 plug is an excellent option to charge at the same rate and the wire and plug itself are cheaper by almost half. This can add up depending on how long of a run you have to have from your breaker box. The tesla charger doesn't use the center neutral wire on the 14-50 anyway so it's kind of a waste unless you really need that type of specific plug (i.e. RV, dryer).

The hardwired wall connector has a higher max output (48 vs 40 amps) and is a less expensive install. I do EVSE installs and a plug-in outlet will cost a customer $2-300 more because of the commercial grade outlet, extra neutral wire and if necessary a GFCI breaker. You need a good reason to want the plug-in application.

Something to note is that a wall outlet that is used for EV charging with a plugin charger must be on a GFCI breaker - per updated US building code. If you hardwire an EV charger with built in GFCI protection then you don't need a GFCI breaker. That can offset the premium for a hardwired charger, because some GFCI breakers are much more expanse that standard breakers (depending on which brand of panel you have installed).

The Code was changed but not all areas have adopted that change. Here in NC, it is not yet required. More importantly is the need to use a commercial grade receptacle.

Wondering why there is difference in charging speeds for model 3 and model 3 SR+ using HPWC. And second question is that true that the slower you charge tesla the better it is for battery longevity? If yes then it is better to stay with 120 V mobile charger if you don't need faster charging
