I went camping in Terschelling back in the mid 1990's and I remember how mindbogglingly huge north-facing white sands beach was. That and the relentless wind.

Please go cycling on Schiermonnikoog or Ameland on a sunny day, you cycle through the dunes, forests and along the beach. Schiermonnikoog is very quiet (also on the cycle paths, which is nice) if you come purely for peace and nature. And Ameland has a little more variety because it has different towns, restaurants and bars.

Bit of a shame you only did a day-trip, Terschelling is my favourite Waddeneiland. You definitively need to visit during the Oerol festival, but even without that it's the most "lively" island. One of the special things about it is that a ship carrying cranberries was wrecked & the berries floated to & now grow on the island, the only place in the Netherlands. So you've got many specialties with them, i loved the cranberry pancakes. It also has a wreckage museum, loads of café's, giant actual beaches & lovely bike paths through nature. My next favourite is Schiermonnikoog. Autoluw, so you're very safe to bike there. It's quieter than Terschelling but still has a lovely village. I've also been to Ameland, that's more of a "family island". Riding quad cycles was funny. I've not yet been to Vlieland, but i expect to like it. It sounds like it's a bit like Schiermonnikoog. Autoluw with lots of nature. I didn't like Texel. It's too large & way too touristy for my taste. Because it's so large, you don't have that island feel like on the others. Also, because it's so close to the cities of Holland, with a _very_ short ferry, everybody & their dog takes the car with them on Texel. Basically it feels like you're in Zandvoort, likely to be run of your feet by a passing Amsterdammer.

I second the remark about the day trip. Next time book at least 1 night, preferably more. Terschelling has enough to offer to stay 3 days 9r more. Even in bad weather. I like to go there in months like November or February in Oosterend or Hoorn. The wind, the rain, the long nights and the relative quietness of the off-season makes you really 'feel' the desolutness of the island.

I really think you should go to Terschelling for at least a couple of days, and would advice you to stay in or near Formerum. It is more or less in the middle of the island (and has the best supermarket on the island, de Jumbo 😊), so a great starting point for exploring, both on foot or by bike. The North Sea beach is completely different to the Waddenkust, I would never call het Wad a beach, to be honest. Also, I saw the north sea beaches in the West of the Netherlands for the first time in my twenties and it was a great disappointment compared to the beach on Terschelling 😅 Some of my favourite places: de Boschplaat, het Groene Strand, het Hoornse bos, de Koegelwieck, the cycling path along het Wad when the water is low and the cycle path all the way through the dunes. Favourite strandpaviljoens: de Branding en Kaap Hoorn (this one is on the inside of the dunes, not on the beach). Also a must: de Bessenschuur, with many different cakes and baked goods to choose from, all with cranberries. Other activities: going on a boattrip to see the seals, visit museum t Behouden Huys, the Bunker Museum about the Atlanticwall on Terschelling or the church in Hoorn, which is very picturesque. I love all of the waddeneilanden, but Terschelling is my favourite, because it offers such a diverse landscape without losing the island feel. I think Schiermonnikoog is my second favourite. Hope you give it another go :)

Things to do when you are at Terschelling: Enjoy the Noordzee beach, for walks, enjoying the sun (if there is any), swimming, collecting sea shells, making sand castles, flying a kite and so on Make bike rides across the island Visit the Wrakkenmuseum Shop at the Cranberry winkel, buy anything with cranberries in it The local aquarium is cute too Go spotting seals Enjoy the restaurants and bars in the towns and at the beach The other islands are fun as well, each island has its own vibe.

If you go back or if you go to one of the other islands; bring some time. You need at least a weekend to truly enjoy the waddeneilanden. Rent a bike, explore, sit on top of a sand dune and soak in the view, collect sea shells on the beach, discover the night sky’s, smell the Waddenzee at low tide and discover great food. Terschelling is my favorite but all our islands are beautiful. It is the perfect weekend getaway.

Instead of roasting you guys, I'm actually going to thank you for not getting on a tandembike with that kind of weather when you don't feel confident! It may have saved not only you from injury, but others as well. Normally I'm among the first ones to call people chicken for skipping simple activities like that because of a little unexpected circumstances 😇 But in this case, you made the right call in my opinion. The weather is kinda 💩 at the moment, but hey, this is the Netherlands. Before you know it we'll be complaining about the heat and humidity again 🤣🤣

If it's ever nicer weather, two things you should try: Wadlopen, which is basically walk between two islands when the sea has subsided (ebb phase). I personally did this once on Vlieland Shrimp fishing! This one I did on Texel if I recall correctly but I'm sure others have such events as well. It was really cool to experience how real shrimp fishing works and we even got to cook the shrimps on the boat itself, the freshest fish I've ever eaten

I really enjoyed Schiermonnikoog. Only a small part of Schier is permanently inhabited, the rest is a large nature reserve. Higly recommended to take a tour of the island by bike. There's also a very large bunker complex that is open to visitors, if that's what takes your fancy, as well as a very picturesque little village.

@@buncharted Schiermonnikoog would be an excellent choice! What makes it special that the use of cars is heavily restricted, outsiders can't bring their car, use of car for islanders is discouraged, it is weirdly quiet on the island. And they have a "dorpsomroeper" a town crier, something from the middle ages, a man on a bicycle that goes from place to place with his megaphone to tell people the "news".

It's a bit funny seeing you struggle with the wind. It's so common here in the north. There's this thing called "frisse neus halen", which means to get some fresh air. There was even a marketing campaign called "Opfriesen" about this as well. I'm always surprised by how many people are going for walks when it's stormy here. Whenever you come back, be sure to visit Ameland (my favorite island) and Dokkum (beautiful small fortified city).

What did you miss on Terschelling? I’m afraid a lot…… Personally I enjoy the ’Waddeneilanden’ most in May-June or September-October. Still touristy, but a little less noisy. The charm for me is mostly cycling or walking through nature, with the beautiful dunes and beaches in the North, the polder and Waddenzee Coast in the South, the Bosplaat in the East and the small villages in between. Cycling is by far the best way to enjoy it all. Try an e-bike if you don’t like wind. A nice tour would be to start where you were and follow the cycle path next to the Waddenzee (along the dike) until Oosterend. If you leave the Bosplaat nature reserve for a next time, you can return either through all the villages (if you don’t mind to cycle next to the ‘main road’) or follow the cycle path a little North along the dunes. The area between the main village West Terschelling (where the ferry arrives) and the North Sea Coast is also gerat for walking and cycling. A lot of nature, but you will be able to find some nice restaurants and culinary specialties,,,,,

Vlieland is nice too ! Really enjoyed my stay there.....pretty relaxed as only the locals drive cars there......visitors cannot bring cars, motorcycles etc. so when riding a bike, you're pretty safe in that respect. Although Vlieland is a bit smaller, I wouldn't like to crawl around ;-) ...it's big enough so DO rent a bike (lots of rentals there.....)

I would say start your tour in Texel. Every island has got its own vibe. Dont forget to go to the brewery Texels and try skuumkoppe. Stay there for the day and sleep. Next day go to the northern part where you can catch a ferry to Vlieland. Go seal spotting. Rinse and repeat, make it a stopover. Take the ferry to Terschelling from Vlieland. You can do island hopping. And don't miss out on Schiermonnikoog. Such a car free island. But you will enjoy it more without the typical Dutch drizzling summer I do imagine that. Then again you experienced what we call 'uitwaaien' aka endure the gusts / storm. My preference 1. Schiermonnikoog 2. Vlieland 3. Terschelling / Ameland / Texel And how to not forget the correct order of islands? Tv tas! Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland, Schiermonnikoog makes up for tv tas in short. Like a bag for your tv 😅

a few years ago I did a Wadden Island tour, every day a different island, where I went back to the mainland every time, so 1 day for 1 island, even though I know that this is short on every island. but that way you can pre-empt the atmosphere of each island. my favorite is Vlie(land). Try the bunker cheese there or Terschelling the sheep cheese. I know that there are also possibilities for wadden island hopping. maybe something for you? I think there are 5 Dutch Wadden Islands (which are inhabited) and also a few plates that are uninhabited and flooded at high tide.

I used to live in the north of Friesland about 10km from the coast, and there is always wind. It can easily be a coat colder (5-10 C degrees) but you do get amazing light, skies and fresh air. As crazy as this sounds, Terschelling is not a bad place to celebrate Christmas as well. I absolutely love Friesland and the Frisians. What can I say I am biased. When it comes to the weather, you have been in bad luck to explore the Netherlands this year. The 'summer' has been crazy. The temperature difference between being in the rain and in the sun is extreme. I keep on changing clothes. Quite abnormal.

The have electric bikes to hire near the ferry terminal, also in that street with the white church. There is a very cool bunker museum in west Terschelling, and I highly recommend midland. And I think I already advised going to Oerol before, a great cultural festival. They also have combi tickets for a day, with one crossing with the slow and one with the fast ferry. Hoped you also checked out Harlingen properly, one of my favorite Frisian towns. After Sneek, which is fantastic, especially around Sneek week. Terschelling is one of my favorite islands, even though my family comes from Ameland. Texel is also great and easy to get to with a ferry taking only 25 minutes. There is a seal center there and a lot of nature to visit. The shipping museum near the ferry terminal in Den Helder is also a nice place to visit, which includes a submarine you can get inside of.

A few years ago I rented a tandem bicycle on Terschelling. I must say that even for a seasoned Dutch cyclist, a tandem is very unfamiliar. You swing in all directions and especially with strong winds it doesn't seem fun. Very wise choice on your part. Next time I would definitely visit Texel. And then a trip on the shrimp boat and eat shrimp during the trip. Then to 'Paal 17' for a Texel 'skuumkoppe'. X years ago in high school I think I was almost drunk there for the first time 🤣. You can also visit the Texel brewery on Texel (Book in advance).

The Noordzee beach is a very different type of beach than the Waddenzee beach. The Waddenzee is quite litterally a collection of sandbanks that flood every high tide, and fall dry every low tide. While the Noordzee is open sea. Those sheep you filmed, those are our special island sheep. From 2 islands over, Texel. This race of sheep is maybe not quite as woolly as other sheep, because the race has been bred for mutton as well as wool. That's why they're more chonky sheep than woolly sheep.

I like the Waddeneilanden. Vlieland is also beautiful if you love nature. It is for circa 60% protected nature with a great variety of birds. I don't know much about Ameland but it is also beautiful. Living in Amsterdam I know the island Tessel (or Texel) the best. It is the biggest Waddeneiland and it is not Friesland but Noord-Holland. It is easy to get there with a direct train from Amsterdam to Den Helder and take the ferry. It goes every hour and it only takes 20 minutes. If you go, it is also interesting to visit Den Helder. Den Helder is also an old city and it is home to the country's main naval base. So maybe a visit to the harbour is interesting.

Be sure next time to bike all the way to Oosterend. Maybe even all the way to the "drenkelingenhut". All the villages on your way are beautiful (actually as are on the other Frisian Isles). The older (farm)houses have a very distinct architecture that makes them look foreign even to the Dutch. Also in the east are many cranberry fileds. Terschelling is renowned for its cranberries. Be sure to find how this happened!! The "Rustende Jager" in Formerum is a nice old pub/ restaurant to get your lunch or dinner on your way up to or from the east. In Formerum is also the "Strandjuttersmuseum (beachcombermuseum). Last: it is kinda remarkable how you as English speakers pronounce Terschelling pretty much perfect, but mess up Harlingen. Forget the g (as in good) sound. We pronounce the ng combination exactly like you do in words like ring, thing, wing etc. (unless you are from some areas in Northern England). Just add the sound of "an" behind it. But again, my complements for the pronunciation ofTerschelling. Not many foreigners will do that after you.

Texel is the largest of the Wadden Islands (and officially part of Noord Holland and not Friesland ), the train stops right at the ferry terminal in Den Helder. From Texel, there are small ferries going to Vlieland, so it would be easy to combine both islands. On Texel, Den Burg is the largest town. There is also a seal rescue on the island, Ecomare. You can go skydiving at the island's tiny airport. I don't remember where exactly, but there is a house along the road near the airport with a large Moai statue in their front yard! 🗿

Kinda understandable about not getting a tandem there on that day (for the first time). I suspect normal ones would've been just fine though. And while it wasn't a good weather day this served a purpose, people should be aware that whenever you go here rain and storms can happen. If you still don't feel comfortable and the weather is nice but windy rather than a tandem there are those other bikes where the riders sit next to each other and it has two rear wheels, could be a fun alternative if available. The gopro attachment for filming won't even be needed since there's one human that doesn't need to steer the vehicle! Random important thing about 5:34, this sheep made it back on its feet but especially with larger fully mature sheep if they are stuck on their back can actually be deadly to them. They are however rather stupid, I have gone into the field of a farmer and rang the doorbell a few times when I saw it. The sheep really seem to believe they are stuck and can't get back on their feet struggling to breathe somewhat, yet when the human approaches about half the time they suddenly they can roll over and run away. Sheep aren't smart, it isn't rare to lambs that are about half of a full size adult to get their head through a fence and then are "stuck" because as they want to go backwards they feel their ears on the fence. Same thing again once the human gets too close they will likely actually pull their head out without problems, but this isn't directly harmful to them and they'll probably pick up on head through fence = bad eventually. For future island visits one big warning, when going to Ameland/it Amelân be sure to look up what the reliability of the boat service is by then. It's less than ideal currently due to depth issues with the "vaargeul" that needs a lot of time and money to be maintained to retain the depth for the ships to keep using it safely. It's not wide enough apparently for both directions to pass each other safely everywhere so the frequency and capacity is reduced, but I suspect people visiting without a car will have less trouble with the capacity issues.

Hi dear people, Alex, you say Good morning perfectly well, but the CH in Terschelling is the same sound as the G in Good morning. Just practice, because the SCH is very common in Dutch. So the verdict is SG….Michelle, it was a bit too cold to walk in a bathing suit, poor you! but there will be a little better weather and I have also seen more sun on TV. See you soon, ❤️ Hil

Surprised that you did not found out about how cranberries came to the islands. Maybe not, since it was only a day trip. Perhaps revisit the islands for a longer stay. You also might like the German and Danish Wadden Islands. You certainly will like the German Baltic sea coast. Perhaps visit Helgoland above Hamburg too.

Great that you went. Where you were is not a beach. it is a piece of sea where the water retracted. with this weather it is not so nice. If you go again the beach on the north side is fantastic. Also when it is dark there are all kinds of small creatures in the surf that light up when you walk trough the water line.

I love the smallest Inhabited island Vlieland, The island only had one village, in the past the west side of Vlieland was lost to the sea. It is now a big sand plate used as practice area for jet fighters to drop bombs. On weekends that part of the island is also open for walks There is a nice restaurant at the most west part called Posthuis.

Texel, Vlieland and Terschelling is doable in one day, just why would you? The one thing you'd need is somewhat of a nice weather prediction. There a boat from Texel to Vlieland, first part is a horse and cart to the ferry then a boat to Vlieland, and next is the boat to Terschelling. One thing, between the islands is 'scheduled' up to a point, tides play a large role in scheduling. The last thing to mention, take your time, ask the locals what to do and where to eat. Time on the islands is slower, if that makes sense at all. Bit like Jamaica, if it happens today that is ok, if not, tomorrow is fine too. 😊

Forgot something, in the grand scheme of things the coastal defence of the Netherlands is just a local thing. There is a more important thing happening that could play part in the defence of the US coastal defences. About 10 years ago the 'zand motor' was built. This video explains the process, and you can see from the shape of the Waddenislands why it is important; without the islands Friesland, Groningen and the lower part of Germany and Danmark would be toast in a storm... kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2KrXmhujJyEes0

Vlieland is also great. It's verry smal but really nice. If you go to any of the Waddeneilanden, you should take a should take a zeehondensafari. You get a ride on a small boot to go and see wild seals. Really cool i promes. Terschelling also has a darknessreserve. Its one of the few in Europe. You should be able to even see the milkeway

3:45... and now you know what *"uitwaaien"* is! Walking a windy beach, getting really hungry, and then rosy and tired when you're finally home again...and sleeping the best sleep you've ever had. All due to "even lekker uitwaaien". Another saying that sort of comes from this is "Waai niet uit je hempie!" (or hemdje) Don't blow out of your shirt! (or, don't let the wind blow you out of your shirt). Not so easy to translate now that I try! Tandem: Practice at home! Rent one, try where you live now. Slowly! Communication is everything on a tandem. Islands: you really should visit all of them, but: Ameland, Texel, Schiermonnikoog. If I may, I would like to add one thing about pronouncing the G/sch here, there is a region here in NL that uses the SOFT G and R, and that should be way easier for you. *Google limburgs accent en brabants accent* and you will find things to listen to, really, give it a go, because it is so much easier to pronounce! Especially for Americans.

@@buncharted Honestly if you're in Europe in winter and want some sun you might just as well pick one of the Canary Islands. When I was there this January I found it fairly affordable on its own, but the European low cost carriers do fly there too so you save lots on the flight alone too compared to more exotic destinations.
