No, you guys don't understand, that's what Republicans do. This guy is an EE and ME from my alma mater, he knows. He lives off-grid and drives an electric car - I do, too. He knows what's best for him and his family. But... he lives in Kentucky and if you want to survive as a politician in a Southern state like KY, you have to speak the Republican language of dumb. Wouldn't surprise me to learn he's declared himself a "staunch supporter" of oil drilling, gas fracking and coal mining. Probably talks more about carrying guns than driving electric cars to his constituents. I bet he tells everyone he believes in the imaginary good lord daddy in the sky, too. In summary, a smart guy that knows truth from lie but sleeps soundly at night while making a living playing a political hack with people's taxes.

Thanks for sharing! Considering the trouble people had to go through to get a lithium based battery for their homes, Tesla should provide this capability as an option to their cars soon! There is a significant amount of people who don't use their cars that much. It is surely nice to have a Tesla car powering a house for with 60-80 miles worth of power, for a start.

Wonderful video! I've always wanted to do something like that. That battery pack looked like it was in tip-top shape judging from the laptop monitor. No faults, no deviations... might as well be brand new! And the advantage of using tesla battery modules with their controllers intact is that you should get really excellent life out of it. Potentially a lot more than 15 years judging by the statistics from Tesla drivers. Your inverters will have to be replaced long before the new batteries. The house should pull far fewer peak watts than a car, but it might be a good idea to test peak consumption for a few hours and monitor the battery temperature to see how it handles the load. Those battery packs are designed to have coolant flow. Thanks for doing all the work putting the video together. -Matt
@oldmilwaukee1006 жыл бұрын
I'll definitely monitor the temperature next time I do several hours of solar charging at 10kw+. I wouldn't know how to pull 10kw of load from the battery with my house for more than a few seconds (maybe both GSHP's starting at once), lol. Actually, the one thing I can plug into my house that would draw 10kW is my model S (charging)! I'll try that and see what temps the batteries reach some time.

Hello from Cairo Egypt. I liked your video and I wanted to do the same like you. I studied the chemistry of the Tesla car pack and another type of chemistry which is the LiFePO4. I found the following. The Tesla battery has a smaller number of cycles. 500 to be exact. So if we do the maths we will see that 500 cycles X 250 miles = 125,000 miles. That is what the pack is guaranteed for . After that the battery should lose some capacity. I suspect that if you always charge the battery to say 80% then the number of cycles will increase dramatically. At any rate I doubt very much if you use 85 kWh in one night. The average home in the US uses 30 kWh per day. So with a pack like this you have a very good buffer for cloudy days. Now to the other type of chemistry. The LiFePO4 has at least 5,000 cycles to 80% depth of discharge. So for $15,000 you should get at least 45 kWh. So 45 kWh X 5,000 = 225,225 kWh. 80% of that we get 180,180 kWh. If you use 30 kWh per night then you will have 6006 nights which is more than 16 years. The Tesla pack might live 16 years but I doubt it. And now that you have invested it is too late for that, but the main advantage of these LiFePo4 batteries is that they do not need cooling and they do not catch fire. They are much easier to charge, and in fact you do not need a charge controller to charge them. It depends on the inverter tolerance.The solar panels can be configured in such a way to charge the pack directly. There will be a need for a balancer though which is a cheep thing to add. I will admit that these LiFePO4 batteries are slightly bigger and heavier but not much. Your room for the batteries is more than enough. So I like the LiFePO4 more because they do not catch fire. At any rate please do not take my comment as a negative comment. I think that you did a good thing. And you should be congratulated for that. It would be nice to know how the Tesla pack behaves as time goes by. I think that the Tesla Powerwall has a different chemistry. But all in all if you are off grid and you spent $15,000 then you should be able to get at least 10 years from the pack. That is $1,500 a year. Not bad for a house like yours. So I should say Bravo to you and best regards from Cairo Egypt.

Thanks for the reply! I think the Tesla batteries will last much longer...steinbuch.wordpress.com/2015/01/24/tesla-model-s-battery-degradation-data/

Lithium batteries don't fail after their rated cycle lifespan; they just degrade by holding less of a charge. The oldest Model S on the road are approaching 8 years old but they still hold about 90% of their original capacity.
@jestronixhanderson98983 жыл бұрын
Roman Val - even my cheap old leaf, that cop so much negative flack is still doing ok with 13% loss over 6 years and a much heavier cycle life than a Tesla and no thermal cooling. The 2011 -13 leafs were terrible and ruined the perception of leafs and electric cars in general.

Very impressive! I think I would have been more inclined to purchase individual 18650 lithium cells from lithium battery wholesale and cobble on my own charge controller and battery management system. I have a shed build that's overdue that I plan to do this spring and I think I'll make a PVC pipe version of the Tesla wall on the cheap with solar panels on the roof. Thanks for the inspiration and education. And thanks for all you do fighting for us with the orcs in Mordor.
@zxcvasdfqwer123456 жыл бұрын
But then the batteries wouldn't be all set up for you.
@Liberty4Ever6 жыл бұрын
Definitely a trade off. The used Tesla battery cost 60% less than an equivalent capacity in new Panasonic 18650 lithium ion cells at internet prices, and the Tesla battery modules already have protective circuits and battery management. That's huge. However, new cells can be bought in smaller quantities if desired, and I'd probably rather design a charging circuit, overcurrent protection and battery management circuits rather than fooling the Tesla modules into charging, although apparently Thomas was able to leverage someone else's work for that. Thomas is wicked smart so I have no doubt the used Tesla battery was the best way to go. However, I do love the idea of being able to stack 13 of the 18650 lithium ion batteries in a PVC tube to make 48V and then be able to replace a single cell if it went bad. It's much harder to work on a Tesla battery module to keep it running at peak performance. No doubt that Li ion kicks the crap out of lead acid every day and twice on Sunday. The Tesla battery is a huge upgrade for Thomas' house. Less chopping wood and more solar powered geothermal heating. That's a win.
@jasonwalker94716 жыл бұрын
Tesla cells might use the 18650 format, but they are packed with a custom chemistry that no one else uses. Kinda like how you can buy a double-A battery from anyone, but some of them will last 3 times longer under the same load than others. 18650 is just a size format like double-A. It says nothing about what's in the cell.
@Liberty4Ever6 жыл бұрын
Jason Walker - There are definitely chemistries that favor various factors such as maximum energy density, maximum instantaneous current, minimal self-discharge, maximum charge recharge cycles, etc. They are largely trade-offs. I don't think Tesla has any magic recipe or secret sauce. A good Panasonic lithium ion cell is probably comprable to the cells used in the Tesla modules.
@lesp3154 жыл бұрын
@@Liberty4Ever Your idea is not good. Tesla pack are spot welded and connected with fuse type of wires. You will never have good connection by stacking them on top of each other in a PVC pipe. These batteries are not toys. You might burn your house down and maybe you neighbors too. Good luck.

I live in Southern California have spent about $1500 making my house energy efficient. I recently looked into putting on solar panels my roof, but it didn't make sense economically. Even with subsidies, Solar City calculated it would take 40 years to recoop my costs. For me, It was better to let the utilities go green because they can do it with economy of scale. My point is: working on efficiency can go a long way. My electric bill is $30/mo and gas is $10/mo. The work I put in to insulate the house and block out the sun means I don't need to heat or cool my house.

I am fully impressed. Looking to create a quarter scale version of this one for a friend. Many modules offered on ebay have 50k mi on them. I have heard that the 5.6 kwH nominal capacity is really closer to 3.6 kwh (65%) capacity due degradation and to inefficiencies of running at non 400 v voltages. Have they proven true to their 5.6 kwH nomenclature? I noticed the capacity you said was about 95% of what 5.6 kwh * 16 modules would be...was that based on a reading, or an educated guess? Also, these videos are some of the most badass things I have seen and restore a glimmering of confidence in the moral aptitude of people in power....from one of the reddest states in the country..... building clean energy infrastructure from scratch and running the government....well done, bravo! This was a neat project. Would there be any benefit to hooking up the Tesla cooling system to control the battery temperature, maybe from the perspective of extending the life of the cells since they get hot when charging or discharging? Also, could you provide some cost numbers and dates associate with installing your system, including the PV panels, inverters, etc.? Your per month cost on the system, assuming a 10 year life, still seems relatively high. Besides reliability in the case where the grid goes down, what is your motivation for going off the grid in this manner?
@oldmilwaukee1006 жыл бұрын
I might in fact hook up the coolant lines if I discover that doing so will improve any aspect (lifespan, or capacity to hold a charge, or efficiency) of the battery by 10% or more. back of the envelope calculation: 10% of $15,000 is $1,500, and I could build a coolant recirculating system for less than that, so it would be worth it. You are right that it's more expensive to live off the grid than to live on the grid... unless you resolve to use less electricity while living off the grid.

You will need a voltage controller to limit and bypass charging voltage a balancer and meters in and out all converters. Once the battery is charge you want to directly bypass it and feed the house continuously from solar and use battery as back up or fill in when no power is available from solar.

what if your hands are busy elsewhere , can the bypass be automated?

Actually no, it's far more practical to disassemble the battery to the bare cells. 400V+ is hazardous to work with and high voltage step down converters are expensive, big, heavy and add efficiency losses. Bypassing the BMS and contactors also require opening up the casing.

I didn't see anything about connecting the cooling system. Is that not needed with this setup due to vastly lower charge and discharge rates as compared to use in the Model S?

You nailed it. You don't really have to worry about the high temp with this type of setup for the reasons you stated, but you do have to worry about the low temp. That shouldn't be a problem with his setup due to being indoors. That Tesla Battery Radiator system is also a heating system to prevent freezing, in addition to keeping it cool during high amp discharges. It's quite ingenuous.

Amazing Vid! I heard that if you keep the state of charge on the batteries around 80% and do not charge to 100%, you can dramatically extend the life of the batteries. Do you have any control over this?

yes, total control! I just made another video in which i discuss this.

I have cycled my 70 kwh pack from 38-48v for almost 2 years now You can charge up to 50.4v And go as low as 36v These are Top of the line I use 40-80 kwh's a day (10-50 KWH from the pack. Cloudy or night time)
